Financially strong long-term perspectiveExxonMobils net income in 2008 reached 45 billion dollars, with a 34 percent return on capital employed. The companystotal gas and oil production was around 3.9 million barrelso.e. per day. ExxonMobils leading position in the energymarket is based on its long term-outlook o worldwideeconomic growth and energy. The company is continuallymaking large investments, independent o the ups anddowns in the industry. ExxonMobil is to invest between $25

and $30 billion annually over the next 5 years and a record$29 billion in 2009.

Future Energy OutlookIn concert with economic growth and expanding population, energy demand by 2030 is estimated to rise by 35%compared to year 2005. The major part o this energydemand will occur in non OECD countries, where billions opeople will need increased access to energy to increase theirstandard o living. Fossil uels, i.e. oil, gas and coal, willthrough 2030 satisy an estimated 80% o global energydemand. ExxonMobil, together with the rest o the petroleumindustry, will thereore continue to be a major contributor tomeeting the worlds uture energy demand.

Development o new technologiesTo deal with uture energy challenges, new energy ecienttechnology and innovative processes need to be developed.ExxonMobil employs more than 14,000 scientists andengineers, over 1,000 o them with Ph.D.s. Over the last veyears, ExxonMobil Corporation has invested 3.7 billiondollars in research and development, which has yieldedgood results.

Here are some examples o new technologies: An exploration technology called R3M, which uses

electromagnetic listening devices to detect undersea

    oil and gas deposits

A lithium-ion battery breakthrough that greatly improves

the saety, power and reliability o larger batteries or hybridvehicles, thereby helping promote their use to improve ueleconomy and reduce emissions

Advanced vehicle and fuel technologies that will improve

the uel-economy and reduce the emissions otodays automobiles

    ExxonMobil takes the

environmental challenge seriouslyExxonMobil acknowledges that energy use, economicactivity and environmental challenges are closely interlinked.Protecting the environment is thereore one o the corporationsmost important goals. ExxonMobil is an industry leader in theuse o cogeneration, the process by which the heat that isgenerated during the production o electricity is capturedand used or other purposes. A new cogeneration plantproducing 125 megawatt electricity was opened in Antwerpin the spring o 2009. The plant will reduce Belgiums carbondioxide (CO2) emissions by around 200,000 tons per year the equivalent o removing about 90,000 cars romEuropes roads.

ExxonMobil believes that carbon capture and storage (CCS)represents an important option to address global CO2emissions. ExxonMobil is a global leader in the use o thesetechnologies, and we have developed and used them ormany years. The company participates in a European projectnamed Co2ReMoVe, which evaluates a range o technolo-gies to monitor the injection and storage o CO2 rom gasstreams at the oshore Sleipner and Snhvit elds inNorway. ExxonMobil shares ownership o the Sleipner eld, where over 1 million metric tons o CO2 have been seques-tered each year since 1998.

ExplorationExxonMobil has been an active player on the Norwegianexploration scene since 1965, when Esso Norge AS wasawarded the rst three exploration licenses on the NorwegianContinental Shel (NCS). ExxonMobil is actively exploring

blocks in more rontier areas and around existing inrastructurein the North Sea and Haltenbanken. The company has, both asan operator and as a partner in OBO (Operated By Others)projects, made many oil and gas discoveries. The success isdue to the application o state-o-the-art exploration technolo-gies, a highly qualied and trained local sta, and access toExxonMobils technical expertise on a global scale.

Out o as many as 25 discoveries made on the Norwegiancontinental shel in 2008, ExxonMobil has interest in aroundone third. Two o the most important discoveries were madeat the Dagny and Njord elds. NPD has estimated the size othese two discoveries at respectively 120160 million and3048 million barrels o oil equivalent. Common or all thenew discoveries is their location near existing inrastructure.Early 2009, the company was awarded interest in two newlicences in the 2008 APA Licensing Round. In May 2009,ExxonMobil was awarded operatorship and 50% interest inPL520 in the Norwegian Sea in the 20th Licensing Round.

ExxonMobil will pursue evaluation o available areas in theNorth Sea, the Norwegian Sea and Barents Sea. We willcontinue the emphasis on co-existence with all industries

through fawless implementation o our exploration programs, with zero harmul impact on the environment. The com-panys perormance on the Norwegian Continental Shel todate, coupled with its worldwide experience with environ-mentally sensitive areas, operating procedures andadvanced technology, ensures that co-existencewill continue into the uture.

The organization in Norway draws on ExxonMobils technology, research eorts and experience gained worldwide. Examplesare the use o 4-D seismic to plan new wells, the EM-Power a highly advanced reservoir modeling tool used or extended

reach, and horizontal wells or increased recovery rom Balder,Jotun and Ringhorne elds, etc. Norways research institutionsare world leaders in certain elds. The parent company,ExxonMobil in the US, used amongst others Marintek,

Trondheim, in developing new technology or LNG ships.

In 2008 our company participated in OG21 (Oil and Gas inthe 21st Century), which is a major R & D initiative started byNorwegian authorities to develop new technology and newsystems in support o continued production on the NorwegianContinental Shel. In this program ExxonMobil has a leadingrole within cost ecient drilling. One o the projects thatExxonMobil supports entails the development o a newdrilling tool named Badger Explorer a robot that does notneed to be connected to a rig. Badger Explorer will be ableto drill into the reservoirs while simultaneously transmittingseismic inormation to the surace. Several small holes havebeen drilled by a Badger prototype. Drilling o onshoretestholes was carried out in Denmark in 2008, while therewill be urther testing o the prototype through an onshoredrilling programme in Norway in 2009.

    Jotun

The Jotun ield is developed with two installations; a wellhead/drilling platorm (Jotun B) which produces to a loating produc-tion, storage, and oloading vessel (FPSO, Jotun A). The ieldis located in the North Sea 200 km west o Stavanger. Theaverage production rate in 2008 was 6,800 barrels o oil perday. Jotun production has been on decline over the last ew

years, thus resulting in spare production capacity. In order toutilize this capacity, Balder was connected to Jotun via a gaspipeline in 2003, while pipelines where installed betweenRinghorne and Jotun in 2004, allowing parts o the Ringhorneield to produce to the Jotun FPSO in addition to Balder.

In 2008, Ringhorne sent an average o 35,100 barrels o oilper day to Jotun or inal processing and storage prior toexport. In addition, 17 million standard cubic eet per day ogas was exported to Jotun rom Balder and Ringhorne orgas sales. Two exploration wells will be drilled near theJotun ield in 2009. ExxonMobil is the operator o Jotun and

has 45% equity in the ield. Other participants are Dana(45%), Petoro (3%), and Det norske (7%).

    Balder

The Balder ield consists o a loating production, storage, and oloading vessel (FPSO) and several subsea productionsystems. It is located in the North Sea approximately 190km northwest o Stavanger. In early 2003, the Ringhorneplatorm was tied back to the Balder FPSO or processingand export. In October 2003, Balder started gas export toStatpipe via the Jotun FPSO. Numerous upgrades to the

Balder FPSO process and compression systems have beencarried out during the last ew years, resulting in signiicantlyimproved reliability. In 2008, the Balder FPSO processed74,400 barrels o oil per day, 21,200 rom the Balder ieldand 53,200 rom Ringhorne. ExxonMobil is the operator andhas 100% ownership in the Balder ield.

    Ringhorne

The Ringhorne ield is located about 9 km north o theBalder FPSO and includes a platorm with initial processingand water injection capabilities. Production is routed to theBalder and Jotun installations or inal processing, storageand oloading. Production commenced in February 2003.

Also in 2003, two new discoveries were made in the Ringhornearea. Ringhorne West commenced production in April 2004,within a year o discovery, while Ringhorne East started to pro-

duce in March 2006. In 2008, the Ringhorne ield produced anaverage o 88,300 barrels o oil per day. 4-D seismic will becollected in the Balder/Ringhorne area in 2009 in preparationo the next drilling campaign in these ields.

ExxonMobil is the operator and has 100% ownership in theRinghorne ields, except or Ringhorne East whereExxonMobils equity is 77.4%. The other Ringhorne Eastparticipants are StatoilHydro (14.8%) and Petoro (7.8%).

    Sigyn

The Sigyn ield, which is located in the Sleipner area in the

North Sea, started producing in 2002. The ield consists otwo gas/condensate producers and one oil producer that areconnected to the Sleipner A platorm via a subsea template. In 2008, the average production on Sigyn was 56 millionstandard cubic eet o gas per day and 18,000 barrels ocondensate per day. ExxonMobil is the operator with 40%ownership. The other participantis StatoilHydro (60%).

ProductionExxonMobils operated assets in the UK and Norway are operated by one unit, North Sea Production (NSP), which operates

rom two locations, Stavanger and Aberdeen. NSP is responsible or operation o the Ringhorne, Balder, Jotun, and Sigyn

elds in Norway, and the Beryl Area and the Sage Gas Plant in the UK.

Reningand logisticsExxonMobils renery at Slagentangen, Vestold, inaugurated

in 1961, is located in a sheltered environment at the Oslojord. The renery processes crude oil into uels or sea, land and airtransportation, as well as heating products. Annual productioncapacity is 6 million tons o crude oil per year, which representsmore than hal o Norways total consumption.

The renery converts crude oil, mainly rom the North Sea, intomost qualities o engine uels and uel oils. The lightest arepropane and butane, ollowed by petrol, aviation uel, kerosene, diesel and light uel oil. The heaviest product is heavy oil. In2002, a new diesel reactor was tied in and put into operation.

The renery at Slagentangen produces sulphur ree diesel(less than 10 ppm sulphur), which is a prerequisiteor modern, environmentally riendly cars withcatalyst treatment o exhaust gases.

In 2007, the renery installed a plant or blendingo biodiesel. It supplies diesel with up to 5%blending o a biocomponent based on rape oil.

This blending percentage may be used by all dieselcars without causing any engine trouble or confict-ing with guarantees given by the car manuacturers.

Around 60% o the renery production o petroleumproducts is exported, qualiying the renery as one o thelargest export companies o mainland Norway. All crude oil andaround 90% o the total production is ofoaded/loaded at the

jetty which can receive ships up to 250,000 ton deadweight.Annually, around 800 ships call on the port. The Slagentangenoce also manages the Supply, Transportation and Distribution(STD) business i.e. ExxonMobils trade o crude oil and petroleumproducts, both renery production and production rom theelds in the North Sea as well as the companys three mainstorage terminals located in Fredrikstad, Bergen and Trondheim.

MarketingExxonMobil markets products both under the Esso andMobil brands through a chain o 311 petrol stations all overNorway, out o which 46 On-the-Run stations which areoering a broad assortment o merchandise. In 2007, the

company introduced its rst unmanned and automatedstations under the name Esso Express. The total marketshare o uel sold at our gasoline stations is 21%.*

ExxonMobils sales organization directly serves the Wholesalesegment. The end user segment is partly based on sales directlyto customers, and partly through Esso Energi AS and otherdealers. All kinds o products are sold, but there is special ocuson low sulphur and environmentally riendly heating products.

The product Optiplus has been very well received inthe private residential market. The market

share has increased to nearly 24%.*In the Marine segment, ExxonMobil

is an active marketing company olow sulphur gas oil as well asheavy oil produced at ourrenery at Slagentangen.

ExxonMobil is also an activeplayer in the lubes and special

products markets, enjoying atotal market share o 31%.*

The most important product is an

enhanced version o Mobil 1. In 2007,the company introduced its rst Mobil

Autocare centres or oil change and minor repairs at several oits gasoline stations. There are now 12 such centres in Norway.

ExxonMobils overall market share or petroleum products is 20%.** Based on data from Statistics Norway.

    Saety and health

ExxonMobil in Norway is working to create an environmentwhere people care about and help each other to achieve a

common goal Nobody Gets Hurt and Protect TomorrowToday. We have established an important principle in ouractivities all injuries and incidents can be avoided, and theeect on the external environment must be minimized.Injuries and damages dont happen, they are created.

In 2008 we had no serious incidents. Unortunately we hadlost time injuries. We continue our goal-oriented eorts atreducing the number o incidents and injuries. Our LossPrevention System (LPS) has been operational since March2007. An important part o LPS is incident reporting. This gives

a good basis or a proactive approach towards our saety workincluding the ability to analyze trends. The theme areas or thesaety work in 2008 has been preventive work in connection withnear misses, observation o work operations, as well asincreased ocus on work planning and identiication o hazard-ous situations prior to start-up o work activities. Furthermore,in 2008 we have initiated increased ocus on process saety inaddition to personell oriented saety.

ExxonMobil has also established programs or continuousreduction o health exposures, including exposure to chemicals, noise, ergonomics and psycho-social impacts. In 2003, an

extensive co-operation program started among employeesat Slagen, the medical doctor, and psychologists in order tomap and understand the psychological causes o incidentsand dangerous actions. This program, which has beennamed A Sae Hand, was urther developed in 2005 tocomprise management training, and it was implementedwithin the Reining and Logistics unction. The programcontinued through 2008.

ExxonMobil employees in Norway have over many yearsachieved a low level o sick leave. In 2008, sickness absence

was 3.8 percent, which is at same level as in the previousyear. In comparison, the general sickness absence inNorway was 7 percent in 2008.

Saety, health, and environmentEnvironment environmental management

The petroleum activities both onshore and oshore must beundertaken within the ramework o a sustainable development,

and the environmental challenges must be solved in amanner that ensures coexistence with other interests. As anexample, the consideration o the isheries has been a centralelement in the planning and implementation o drillingoperations.

To meet these challenges, the environmental program oExxonMobil in Norway is ully integrated into the planningprocess and execution o all activities. The environmentalmanagement system, which is aligned with the internationalstandard ISO 14001, is designed to ensure systematic and

continuous improvement within the environmental area.

    ExxonMobils overall environmental objectives include:

    zero acute pollution

maintain status of zero harmful discharges to sea

    reduce emissions to air

    minimize the amount of waste

minimize the risk of undesirable environmental incidents

    more efcient use of energy

    Sulphur-ree diesel

The renery delivers eco-diesel in all qualities, includingalmost sulphur ree eco-diesel with less than 0.001 percentsulphur content.

    Environmental perormance

The renery had three discharges o oil to the ground in2008 which were immediately reported to the authorities.

The environmental impact o these discharges is consideredsmall since all the oil was collected or the aected soil wasremoved. All other discharges to water and air werewithin the limits determined by the State Pollution Agency

(SFT). The yearly report on the environment and socialresponsibility gives details on emissions and the environ-mental work at the renery.

    Inspection and rehabilitation

o pipe systems on quay and tank park

A comprehensive work program including risk assessment, inspection and rehabilitation o the pipe systems has beenongoing since 2001. The cost o the program is estimated atmore than NOK 75 million.

    Energy and climate gases

International comparisons show that the ExxonMobil reneryat Slagentangen is one o the most ecient reneries in theworld in terms o ecient use o energy. Since the early1990s, the renery has implemented internal measures tosave energy, and the use o energy today is 25% moreecient than it was in 1990. The reason why CO2 emissionsnevertheless have increased during this period, is mainly dueto new environmental requirements to products, i.a.increased desulphurization. Furthermore, the renery hasincreased its processing capacity or crude oil.

Activities and results Exploration & Production 2008

A series o measures have been continued to maintain

discharges to sea at the ExxonMobil operated ields at aminimum level. Injection o produced water rom Balder,Jotun and Ringhorne contributes signiicantly to reducingdischarges to sea. Furthermore, Jotun and Ringhorne havebeen designed with solutions or discharging drilling wastethrough injection. Substituting environmentally harmulchemicals with more environmentally riendly alternatives, has made it possible to urther reduce environmental risksrelated to discharges to sea.

Emissions to air, with ocus on CO2, NOx, and volatile

organic compounds (nmVOC), were kept at a stable level in2008. From 2008, ExxonMobil has participated in CO2quota trade, and quotas equal to our CO2 emissions in2008 were bought. In June 2008, all o ExxonMobils ownoperated licenses on the Norwegian shel joined theBusiness Sectors NOx Fund. The Business Sectors NOxFund was established in 2008 ollowing the entering o anagreement on NOx reduction between the business sectorsorganizations and the Ministry o the Environment and Interna-tional Development. According to this agreement, the industryhas made commitments to reduce NOx emissions by 30,000tons within 2010, giving the companies joining this agreement

ull NOx tax exemption. Companies join this agreement byparticipation in the Business Sectors NOx Fund, paying anamount o money equal to their own NOx emissions. Money

paid to the und will be used to implement the mostcost-eective NOx reduction measures across all

business sectors. In this way, NOx emissions arereduced at a ar lower cost than by paying NOx tax.

ExxonMobils co-operation with other operatorsto ensure ecient reduction o emissions to

air o nmVOC in connection with oshore oil

loading to shuttle tankers, have beencontinued in 2008. The nmVOC recoveryacilities in connection with storage o oilon the Balder and Jotun productionships have been in ull operationthroughout 2008, with a recoveryeciency o nearly 100%.

In 2008, sorting and handling o waste wasperormed on all our oshore installations.

On Balder 66% o all waste was sorted, while respectively 48% and 74% o all waste

was sorted on Ringhorne and Jotun.

During 2008, there were no incidents, overruns or breaches o permits or regulations

that called or notication o the authorities.
