Making Thanksgiving a Jewish Holiday
My Rabbi used to say that Thanksgiving
was one of the most important holidays
on the Jewish calendar. He labeled it
“Homecoming Shabbat.” When home
from college for Thanksgiving break I
would come to synagogue, catch up with
friends, and spend quality time with my
family. My Rabbi’s experience taught him
that when students went away to college
or moved from home, Thanksgiving was
the one time of year they all came back.
It was a moment during the year when
our Jewishness and our Americanism
could be celebrated fully in one swoop.
The Zohar teaches; “When a piece of
wood is burning and its light is dull, what
is done? It is shaken well and its flame
becomes bright. Likewise a student
frequently becomes bright when moving
from one school to another.” Our
children, as they leave for college, will
become wiser and enlightened. They will
also be tempted and confused. Their
Minnesota homes will become less about
a place they have to sleep (which it might
have been in high school) and more a
place they find warmth and regroup. The
synagogue can help with that
comfortable home feeling and
rejuvenation.
Rabbi Shavit-Lonstein, Joshua Fineblum,
and I have begun a new journey for the
synagogue by visiting college students at
the University of Minnesota and
University of Wisconsin-Madison. It is
also our goal to eventually visit students
in other cities as well. As we continue
this venture throughout the years we
hope to add more colleges and
universities to our list to make sure our
college students know they are still a
part of the Temple of Aaron community.
Temple of Aaron will continue to be their
home when they return to Minnesota for
Thanksgiving break or after their studies
are through.
As the clergy and staff set off to various
colleges and invest ourselves in their
journey, we hope they will invest them-
selves in the Temple of Aaron. To do this
I encourage our synagogue members to
take advantage of the Shabbat of
Thanksgiving weekend, and make your
family’s attendance a tradition as much
as turkey and mashed potatoes. We
should lead by example and show our
children that Judaism is important at
every age. By setting aside this one
Shabbat as a time to come to services
and see the Rabbis and familiar faces,
we make this specific Shabbat a part of
their Jewish journey into adulthood. And
of course, having a Shabbat meal on
Friday night will mean a great opportunity
to eat Thanksgiving leftovers.
Enjoy the Holiday!

TAXY Sukkah Crawl Thirty people attended the TAXY Sukkah Crawl on October 4. Participants met at
Temple of Aaron and went to the Segal and Zelle homes before returning to our third
Sukkah at Temple of Aaron. Thank you to the Segals and Zelles for their help in
hosting the program. The group then went to Tiffany’s for a fun social evening
together. We are looking forward to our Next event on November 17. More

We are coming up to the holiday of
Thanksgiving. We have so much to be
thankful for, and I know I do as well. I am
thankful for this loving congregation who
has given me 23 years of being able to
serve and be there for each and every
one of you. I am thankful for my children
and for what God may have in store for
all of us. The Days of Awe impacted me
more deeply this year because it was my
final one in Saint Paul. I have been
reflecting on the past year and look
forward with enthusiasm about starting a
new chapter in my career.
The changing status of my children
combined with the changing needs in our
community make it the perfect time for
me to start a new journey. I am excited
to announce my son Joshua has
graduated from college and looks to
begin Cantorial School next year. My
twins Shelly and Michael will graduate
from Highland Park High School in St.
Paul in 2013 and will be starting college
the following fall.
My family and I want to thank everyone
at Temple of Aaron for supporting us for
over two decades. You have displayed
caring and love and we feel exactly the
same way. I hope to see each of you at
my upcoming honoring oneg December
14, 2012. In the meantime, settling my
personal matters, beginning my national
job search (Cantor’s Assembly and
suggestions from friends and family
around the country) and preparing my
family for their transitions will be my
main focus going forward.
This Thanksgiving will be a very special
one for me and my entire family. It will be
one where we can reflect and
understand the true meaning of what
this holiday has to offer.
Support USCJ As They Help Us USCJ is the national association for
Conservative Synagogues throughout
north America and we pay annual dues
to them for each member. USCJ contin-
ues to do great work locally, nationally
and internationally with our USY teen
programs. In addition, they helped us
recruit Rabbi Jeremy Fine and Director
of Informal Education/Marketing Mark
Gulner. We have placed annual USCJ
dues on your November statement so
please make an annual donation to
support their good work.
The motto “You’re always
welcome at the Temple of
Aaron” was especially true on
September 7 when the Doris
Club of the Upper Midwest held
their annual meeting here.
Some 60 women, all named
Doris, came from Minnesota,
South Dakota, and Wisconsin
to mingle, eat lunch and tour
the building. Hosting the event
was Doris Rubenstein. Other
members of the congregation
involved in the program were Doris Webb — a new Doris Club member; Richard
Strimling who served as tour guide; Karen Balto who was involved in catering; and
Paul Najlis, who took the group photo.
Opportunity of a Lifetime on Shabbat for Oneg/Kiddush
Temple of Aaron has a proud Shabbat
tradition of building community by
providing an oneg each Friday night and
a Kiddush each Saturday morning. The
tradition was very successful and driven
by celebrating bnai mitzvah nearly every
week. This worked well for almost 50
years. Demographics have changed the
reality so we are greatly appreciative that
Sisterhood has been sponsoring over 50
percent of the onegs and kiddushes.
Men’s Club has recently joined in and
helped Sisterhood sponsor the Saturday
Kiddush.
Members who are celebrating a special
birthday, special anniversary, want to
honor someone, or want to help the
synagogue build community on Shabbat
can fully sponsor or partially sponsor an
oneg or Kiddush. Please consider
investing in the range of $100 to $400.
Please contact Executive Director Ken

As we move out of the High Holyday season each of us has had time to think about
what this New Year will bring for each of us. As you continue to ask yourself what
Temple of Aaron has for you and your family to get involved with please keep in mind
the Jewish value of tzedakah as we have the opportunity to give back as a community
with two amazing programs coming this month to Temple of Aaron.
Throughout the month of November you will have your last chance to help join with
Jewish Family Services of St. Paul and other local organizations in the B’yachad
program. This drive helps those in need in our community by giving them the
essential things they need with some extras during the winter months. This creating
of gift baskets for over 120 families in our area can only be done with your help. Any
donations of New, Unwrapped items from the lists on page 7 would help benefit
those people who cannot provide themselves with these items.
On November 11, Temple of Aaron will once again be hosting Kenyon Tzedakah, the
Tzedakah Mall as we did two years ago. During this program six charities both here
and in Israel will be presenting their organizations and we ask our young people
within the school and each member to give to these charities on that day. See page 6
for more details about these charities and our meaningful program. The class with
the most tzedakah will earn a prize. Thank you to Rachel Haim, Education Dept.
Intern and Rachel Lerman, USY Social Action/Tikun Olam V.P. for their hard work in
coordinating this program for the entire community. Please note that Temple of Aaron
will be collecting funds and will make a donation on behalf of the program to the
organizations involved in the project. We urge the entire community to come and take
part in both of these programs.
Please join us in donating items and money to these important causes throughout
this month of giving back. Toda Raba in advance for your support!

Pizza in the Hut
Midat Hachodesh:
Tzedek Tzedek Tirdof The value of
tzedek, justice,
is one that is
highly important
in Judaism. The
word itself is derived from the
Hebrew root Tzadi-Dalet-Koof which
means justice (doing the right thing),
and refers to those who give money
for the benefit of others. The root
itself is the word Tzaddik, a
righteous person who puts value in
the needs of others. This value of
giving tzedakah helps us define who
we are as people and reminds us of
Rabbi Hillel’s quote in Pirkei Avot,
Chapter1:14: “If I am only for myself,
what am I? But if I am not for myself;
who will be for me?” Who and where
will you and your family give
tzedakah this year?

Keystone Community Services is a community-based human service organization in St. Paul,
Minnesota, offering a variety of human service programs for all ages across our service area
at multiple sites. Our programs include three foodshelves which strive to meet the growing
demand for food and other basic needs services. Donations from individuals, businesses,
faith communities and other organizations are critically important.
Pet Project Rescue is a no-kill animal shelter that helps place homeless animals in foster care
homes until they are adopted. All of their animals are spayed/neutered before being adopted
to help prevent the over-population of pets problem that is increasing throughout the world.
They not only rescue cats/dogs from off the streets, but also from local high kill shelters.
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society helps this chronic disease that can cause numbness of the
limbs, loss of vision, and eventually the loss of the ability to move. The MS Society strives to
improve the quality of life for those affected by the disease while searching for the cure. There are
many people within the Temple of Aaron community who have been directly effected by MS.
The Tikvah program at Camp Ramah is designed for Jewish adolescents
with learning, emotional, and developmental disability. Tikvah campers are
fortunate to have the opportunity to be involved in many special programs in
camp. A buddy program pairs Tikvah campers with campers from the oldest
group. Buddies learn about each other and work on special projects while
making new friends. The programming is designed to increase independent living and self-help skills.
The mission of the Israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind is to improve the quality of life of blind
people by providing them with safe mobility, independence and self-confidence through the
faithful assistance of guide dogs. Israel has over 27,000 registered blind people, although
unofficial estimates place this figure much higher. Of these, 250 are guide dog assisted, but this
number is growing steadily as the number of graduates from the Center increases annually.
Ofanim is an Israeli non-profit organization. It converts buses into mobile
classrooms and introduces at-risk youth to the highest quality instructors
and after-school enrichment programs. This year Ofanim will extend their
reach to 2,350 deserving at-risk youth in over 50 remote villages
operating just eight buses. Ofanim’s inspiring vision is to empower the
next generation of Israeli leaders, scientists and entrepreneurs.
The Kinyon Tzedakah, Charity Mall, is a day dedicated to giving Tzedakah. Representatives from
six charities will visit Temple of Aaron and give age-appropriate presentations about their
organizations. The students will have the opportunity to learn about the charities and ask
questions. They will then “shop the mall” with “ToA Kesef” (funny money) to decide which
charities and how much they want to donate to each one.
This program will take place beginning at 9:00 am for Toddler-6th grade. All community members are encouraged to
join our 7th-10th graders at 11:00 am to hear about these amazing causes and give Tzedakah.
The class that raises the most money for Tzedakah will receive a prize.
If your child will be absent on November 11, you may still send money and participate in this synagogue wide program.

A Basic Bequest Helps Our Synagogue Future Each of us can add a short sentence to our Will or Living Trust to make a powerful gift to Temple of Aaron. During our first century of operation we have received thoughtful bequests ranging in size from $500 to $675,000. Our endowments produce interest and dividend income which have created an important financial foundation for our daily operation. We would be pleased to acknowledge you in a future Aaronion if you have already made plans to help us in the future. President Michael Saxon and Executive Director Ken Agranoff are prepared to discuss any and all aspects of our Dor L Dor Endowment Program with you at your convenience.

By Dr. Steven Derfler
We all know where we were when war
broke out in 1973. We were in
synagogue, wrapping up the Ten Days of
Awe, chanting the Yom Kipper liturgy. So
were many Israelis
as well. This holiest
of holy days, when
we seek a renewed
relationship
between God and
our fellow humans, makes it somewhat
unique in Judaism. As the ultimate day
of the sacred, nothing is to violate its
sanctity — except one thing, a life-
threatening situation. At that time, from
all the pulpits in Israel, the statement
put out by the rabbis was that Israel
was threatened with extinction, and
therefore as a life and death issue
faced the State, it was alright to break
the fast, leave the synagogue, and
protect the essence of the Jewish
people. Ever since that day, Kol Yisroel,
Israel’s national radio station,
broadcasts silence on Yom Kippur and,
should an emergency arise, is prepared
then to spread the word.
Egypt needed to regain its position of
authority in the Arab world. It did so by
conducting a daring attack across the
Suez; coordinated with a Syrian attack
in the Golan. The war would last from 6
October - 24 October, 1973. The
Egyptians breeched the Israeli Bar-Lev
Line on the east side of the Canal. They
re-entered Sinai 15 km deep with
tremendous initial success. However,
since the Egyptian military establish-
ment was not prepared for an initial
victory, the spearhead of the attack
outpaced its fuel and ammunition
supply lines and the offensive stalled;
giving Israel the breathing room that it
so desperately needed. The greatest
tank battle the world had yet seen was
fought at “The Chinese Farm”; 9-12
October. It’s funny how stereotypes
creep into the picture. Actually, the
battle took place at a Japanese
agricultural research station in Sinai,
but, to the Israelis, they thought that the
civilians found there were Chinese —
hence, the name.
The gravity of the situation was lost on
neither Prime Minister Golda Meir nor
President Richard Nixon. A U.S. airlift
over a period of 32 days ensured
Israel’s survival, and ultimate victory.
The Israelis under Gen. Ariel Sharon
counter-attacked on 16 October, with
much of its success as a result of
supreme airpower. They re-crossed the
Canal in something called “operation
gazelle,” very little stood in their way to
Cairo. They stopped at “Km. 101.” This
act was the first time that Israel entered
“Africa.” They trapped Egypt’s entire
Third Army on the east side, nearly
30,000 troops.
In the Golan, Syria would also have
initial success. Syrian troops advanced
nearly to the pre-1967 armistice lines.
The Israelis withdrew and regrouped.
They then engaged in yet another major
tank battle, called “The Valley of Tears,”
that saw Syria pushed back farther in
the Golan.
The eventual outcome was that Israel
would occupy several dozen more
square kilometers of the Golan. Syria’s
military capability was severely
damaged. It would take a decade for it
to recover.
Yet the cost was high to Israel. This
small nation lost 2,900 soldiers. Every
Israeli family was touched by this
tragedy. It called for a major policy
analysis once the dust settled.
Both Israeli and Egyptian leadership
saw the futility of war, and quiet steps
began to be taken to end the hostilities.
President Sadat of Egypt now could
work from a position of strength to
negotiate a peace with Israel. He had
demonstrated that the Arab could fight
equally with the Israeli — this concept
was essential to the Arab psyche.
UN Resolution 338 not only called for a
cease-fire, but also for direct negotia-
tions between parties. This was to
implement the earlier Resolution 242.
UN sponsored talks would begin at “Km.
101,” beginning 1 Sept., 1975, allowed
for troop disengagement in Sinai. This
led to a reopening of Suez for the first
time in eight years. For the first time,
there were true glimmers of hope for a
just and lasting peace between Israel
and at least one of her Arab neighbors.

Social Justice Committee mans phones
throughout October and first week of
November
Throughout October and early November, members of
the Temple of Aaron Social Justice committee continue
to call fellow congregants to initiate discussions
regarding the upcoming Marriage Amendment and to
answer any questions that they may have regarding the
issue.
The upcoming November
election will include a
proposed constitutional
amendment concerning
the definition of marriage.
The Minnesota Rabbinical
Assembly, putting the
matter in a Jewish context,
has issued a statement in
opposition to the proposed
amendment and is
encouraging their constituencies to “vote no.” Rabbi
Shavit-Lonstein is a member of the MRA and voted in
support of the MRA statement and our Temple of Aaron
Board (as individuals) has reaffirmed this.
The Social Justice Committee also supports a “NO” vote
on the proposed constitutional amendment requiring a
photo ID and has engaged congregants in conversations
regarding this unnecessary and extreme overhaul of our
election system.
Social Justice - Opinions from a Volunteer Committee
13
This page provides room for updates and views from a committee within the Temple community.
On October 7th, a lively and informative
discussion followed a talk by Josie Johnson,
well known and well versed leader in
education, civil rights,
politics, research, and
communication.
Opinions both for and
against the amendment
were presented. Most
participants left the
session more
knowledgeable and more aware of the
complexities involved in this proposal on
the Nov 7th ballot. The Social Justice
Committee sponsored this event.
Brunch & Learn addressed Voter ID Amendment
Mark Ritchie addressed congregation in October
Minnesota Secretary of State, Mark
Ritchie, spoke at Shabbat services on
Saturday, October 6 on “Spirituality and
Democracy: What Guides My Public
Service.” Mr. Ritchie delivered a powerful
sermon that included the fundamental
values guiding the Minnesota democracy
and a history lesson of how the
Minnesota constitution was developed.
As a former history teacher, Mr. Ritchie
spoke about how Democrats and
Republicans compromised to pass the
constitution including removing a provision protecting the rights
of African Americans to vote. It took more than another 10 years
for African Americans to gain the right to vote.
Mr. Ritchie, as the chief state official responsible for the state’s
election system, encouraged all voters to carefully review both
amendments before voting. He spoke about how Minnesota leads
the nation in voter turnout and therefore should not take any
action that would place obstacles in front of voters. Mr. Ritchie
shared how important our religious values are to our commitment
to building a strong community in Minnesota where we work
together to make sure all Minnesotans have access to the most
important aspects of life. Temple of Aaron is very grateful to Mark
Ritchie for reminding us of how important it is for all of us to
understand our history, the importance of democracy and
educating ourselves about why our votes count so much.
