Nonlinear Continuum Mechanics and Large Inelastic Deformations

Y. I. Dimitrienko, Bauman Moscow State Technical University, Russia

Features7 Presents a rigorous axiomatic approach to continuum mechanics7 Introduces a new approach to the formulation of constitutive equations

for nonlinear continuaIncludes advanced models for visco-elastic materials under large deformation

7 Explores advanced models for plastic materials under large deformation7 Provides a comparison of experimental data and results computed by

different models

The book provides a rigorous axiomatic approach to continuum mechanics under large defor-mation. In addition to the classical nonlinear continuum mechanics – kinematics, fundamen-tal laws, the theory of functions having jump discontinuities across singular surfaces, etc. - the book presents the theory of co-rotational derivatives, dynamic deformation compatibility equations, and the principles of material indifference and symmetry, all in systematized form. The focus of the book is a new approach to the formulation of the constitutive equations for elastic and inelastic continua under large deformation. This new approach is based on using energetic and quasi-energetic couples of stress and deformation tensors. This approach leads to a unified treatment of large, anisotropic elastic, viscoelastic, and plastic deformations. The author analyses classical problems, including some involving nonlinear wave propaga-tion, using different models for continua under large deformation, and shows how differ-ent models lead to different results. The analysis is accompanied by experimental data and detailed numerical results for rubber, the ground, alloys, etc. The book will be an invaluable text for graduate students and researchers in solid mechan-ics, mechanical engineering, applied mathematics, physics and crystallography, as also for scientists developing advanced materials.

Structural Synthesis of Parallel RobotsPart 3: Topologies with Planar Motion of the Moving Platform

G. Gogu, French Institute of Advanced Mechanics, Aubière, France

Features7 Structural solutions of parallel robots employing a systematic

approachIncludes maximally regular and fully-isotropic solutions7 Material represented for the first time in the literature

This book represents the third part of a larger work dedicated to the structural synthesis of parallel robots. The originality of this work resides in the fact that it combines the new formulae for mobility, connectivity, redundancy and over constraints, and the evolutionary morphology in a unified approach of structural synthesis giving interesting innovative solu-tions for parallel robotic manipulators. This is the first book of robotics presenting solutions of coupled, decoupled, uncoupled, fully-isotropic and maximally regular parallel robotic manipulators with planar motion of the moving platform systematically generated by using the structural synthesis approach proposed in Part 1. Non-redundant/redundant, over con-strained/isostatic solutions with simple/complex limbs actuated by linear/rotary actuators with/without idle mobilities are proposed. Many solutions are presented here for the first time in the literature. The author had to make a difficult and challenging choice between protecting these solutions through patents, and releasing them directly into the public domain. The second option was adopted by publishing them in various recent scientific publications and mainly in this book. In this way, the author hopes to contribute to a rapid and widespread implementation of these solutions in future industrial products.

Cell FusionsRegulation and Control

L. Larsson, University of Copenhagen, Denmark (Ed.)

Features7 Offers detailed coverage of a rapidly evolving field7 Examines mechanisms that are important to major human diseases,

such as cancer and retroviral infections like HIV 7 Discusses mechanisms important to stem cell repair and fetal

development

Cell fusions are important to fertilization, placentation, development of skeletal muscle and bone, calcium homeostasis and the immune defence system. Additionally, cell fusions participate in tissue repair and may be important to cancer development, progres-sion and therapy. A large number of factors regulate cell fusions, including receptors and ligands, membrane domain organizing proteins, proteases, signaling molecules and fusogenic proteins that bring membranes close together. In the present volume, we interrogate what mechanisms that may be important to cell fusions in mammals and what mechanisms that may be shared with lower organisms and viruses. Additionally, the importance of cell fusions to the pathogenesis as well as treatment of diseases is addressed.

Mycotoxins and their Metabolites in Humans and Animals

M. Weidenbörner, Bonn, Germany

Features7 Comprehensive reference of mycotoxin levelsUnique database of

mycotoxins7 A welcome addition to the literature on mycotoxins

A mycotoxin is a toxin produced by a fungus under special conditions of moisture and tem-perature. These fungi are aerobic and microscopic and, moreover, may colonize many kinds of food from the field to the table. Mycotoxins are not only a spoilage issue for food, but in high doses can be a serious health threat for humans. The book will be similar to Weiden-borner’s previous two books - “Mycotoxins in Feedstuffs” and “Mycotoxins in Foodstuffs” - in that it will be a review of the literature to create a comprehensive reference for mycotoxin levels. It will be his third (and last) book on the topic, this time focusing on the incidence of a mycotoxin in humans and/or animals (natural or artificial incidence). Each entry will include contamination, concentration rate, mean concentration of organs (humans and animals) with a mycotoxin, as well as sample constitution (where possible) and country of origin of the sample.

Features7 Written by recognized worldwide leaders in the field7 Covers inorganic, organic, and composite aerogels7 Describes military, aerospace, household, environmental, energy,

and biomedical applications, among others7 Benefits a broad audience of materials scientists, chemists, and

engineers in academia and industrial R&D

Aerogels are the lightest solids known. Up to 1000 times lighter than glass and with a density as low as only four times that of air, they show very high thermal, electrical and acoustic insulation values and hold many entries in Guinness World Records. Originally based on silica, R&D efforts have extended this class of materials to non-silicate inorganic oxides, natural and synthetic organic polymers, carbon, metal and ceramic materials, etc. Compos-ite systems involving polymer-crosslinked aerogels and interpenetrating hybrid networks have been developed and exhibit remarkable mechanical strength and flexibility. Even more exotic aerogels based on clays, chalcogenides, phosphides, quantum dots, and biopolymers such as chitosan are opening new applications for the construction, transportation, energy, defense and healthcare industries. Applications in electronics, chemistry, mechanics, engi-neering, energy production and storage, sensors, medicine, nanotechnology, military and aerospace, oil and gas recovery, thermal insulation and household uses are being developed with an estimated annual market growth rate of around 70% until 2015. The Aerogels Handbook summarizes state-of-the-art developments and processing of inorganic, organic, and composite aerogels, including the most important methods of syn-thesis, characterization as well as their typical applications and their possible market impact. Readers will find an exhaustive overview of all aerogel materials known today, their fabrica-tion, upscaling aspects, physical and chemical properties, and most recent advances towards applications and commercial products, some of which are commercially available today.

Features7 Broad scope and coverage from four points of view: the geographical,

the historical, the philosophical and the encyclopedic7 Includes detailed discussions of the theoretical, practical and

ethical issues involved in language selection, data collection, data management

7 A survey of past and present approaches and solutions to problems in the field, and the historical, political, and social variables correlating with fieldwork in different areas of the world

The Handbook of Descriptive Linguistic Fieldwork is the most comprehensive reference on linguistic fieldwork on the market bringing together all the reader needs to carry out suc-cessful linguistic fieldwork. Based on the experiences of two veteran linguistic fieldworkers and advice from more than a twenty active fieldwork researchers, this handbook provides an encyclopedic review of current publications on linguistic fieldwork and surveys past and present approaches and solutions to problems in the field, and the historical, political, and social variables correlating with fieldwork in different areas of the world. The discussion of the ethical dimensions of fieldwork, as well as what constitutes the “typical” linguistic fieldwork setting or consultant is explored from multiple perspectives relevant to fieldwork on every continent. Included is information omitted in most other texts on the subject such as the collection, representation, management, and methods of extracting grammatical information from discourse and conversational data as well as the relationship between questionnaire-based elicitation, text-based elicitation, and philology, and the need for com-binations of these methods. The book is useful before, during and after linguistic field trips since it provides extensive practical macro and micro organization and planning fieldwork tips as well as a handy sketch of major typological

Features for use in linguistic analysis. Comprehensive references are provided at the end of each chapter as resources relevant to the reader's particular interests.

social forces in health, illness and healing7 Provides updates on the field since the last major Handbook of Medical

Sociology was published in 20017 The editors have chaired sections of ASA divisions (Medical Sociology,

Mental Health, and Children and Youth) as well as the governance of ASA itself (former VP of ASA)

The Handbook of the Sociology of Health, Illness & Healing advances the understand-ing of medical sociology by identifying the most important contemporary challenges to the field and suggesting directions for future inquiry. The editors provide a blueprint for guiding research and teaching agendas for the first quarter of the 21st century. In a series of essays, this volume offers a systematic view of the critical questions that face our understanding of the role of social forces in health, illness and healing. It also provides an overall theoretical framework and asks medical sociologists to consider the implications of taking on new directions and approaches. Such issues may include the importance of multiple levels of influences, the utility of dynamic, life course approaches, the role of cul-ture, the impact of social networks, the importance of fundamental causes approaches, and the influences of state structures and policy making.

Forest Management and the Water CycleAn Ecosystem-Based Approach

M. Bredemeier, University of Göttingen, Germany; S. Cohen, Institute of Soil, Water and Environmental Sciences, Bet Dagan, Israel; D. L. Godbold, University of Wales, Bangor, UK; E. Lode, Tallinn University, Estonia; V. Pichler, Technical University Zvolen, Slovakia; P. Schleppi, Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Birmensdorf, Switzerland (Eds.)

Features7 Written by leading European scientists in forest management research7 Includes state-of-the-art reviews and case studies from across Europe7 Comprehensive in scope and range, from tree and catchment to forest

and landscape7 Explores the influence of climate change and the future of forest

systems

The protective function of forests for water quality and water-related hazards, as well as ad-equate water supplies for forest ecosystems in Europe, are potentially at risk due to changing climate and changing land-management practices. Water budgets of forest ecosystems are heavily dependent on climate and forest structure. The latter is determined by the manage-ment measures applied in the forestry sector. Various developments of forest management strategies, imposed on a background of changing climate, are considered in assessing the overall future of forest–water interactions in Europe. Synthesizing recent research on the interactions of forest management and the water regime of forests in Europe and beyond, the book makes an important contribution to the ongoing dialogue between scientists dealing with different scales of forest-water interac-tions. This collaborative endeavour, which covers geographic and climatic gradients from Iceland to Israel and from southern Spain to Estonia and Finland, was made possible through the COST Action "Forest Management and the Water Cycle (FORMAN)", which was launched in 2007 (http://www.forestandwater.eu/). The book will be of particular interest to the research community involved in forest ecosys-tem research and forest hydrology, as well as landscape ecologists and hydrologists in gen-eral. It will also provide reference material for forest practitioners and planners in hydrology and land use.

From the contents Forest Management and the Water Cycle - Introduction to the Challenge.- Acknowledge-ment.- Section 1: Forest and water – tree to small catchment processes in a changing envi-ronment.- 1.0 Introduction.- 1.1 Hydrological effects on below ground processes in temper-ate and Mediterranean forests.- 1.2 Above ground processes - anticipating climate change influences.- 1.3 Field studies of whole-tree leaf and root distribution and water relations in several European forests.- 1.4 Forested water catchments in a changing environment.- 1.5 Forest development in the European Alps and potential consequences on hydrological regime.- 1.6 Effects of Climate Change on the vulnerability of Norway spruce stands – soil hydrological constraints for forest management in Austria’s lowlands.- 1.7 Observed Climate Change in Croatia and its impact on the hydrology of lowlands.- 1.8 The Case of Yatir For-est.- 1.9 How Mediterranean deciduous trees cope with long summer drought? K. Kubitzki, University of Hamburg, Germany (Ed.)

Features7 Richly illustrated7 Takes the most recent systematic findings into account7 An indispensable source of information for anybody in the fields of

pure and applied plant sciences

This volume, the tenth in the series, comprises modern treatments for the families and genera of the eudicot orders Sapindales and Cucurbitales. The circumscription of the orders, families and genera conforms to the most recent systematic studies. The family treatments include descriptions of the families and the genera, genera classification keys, discussions of relationships and data on their morphology, reproductive biology, distribution, ecology and economic importance. Sapindales and Cucurbitales, as understood in this volume, comprise 16 families with 637 genera and roughly 9,240 species. Sapindales include large tropical and southern temperate tree families such as the Anacardiaceae, Sapindaceae (these in the modern circumscription, which includes Aceraceae and Hippocastanaceae), Meliaceae and Rutaceae, which have long been considered to be closely related. Cucurbitales represent a relatively new ordinal con-cept; apart from some small woody groups, the order contains two large families, Cucurbita-ceae and Begoniaceae, which are predominantly, and likely basically, herbaceous. A detailed treatment of the tropical and southern temperate woody family Myrtaceae (itself comprising 142 genera and 6,700 species) is an addendum to the treatment of the Myrtales in Vol. IX of this series.

Regreening the Bare HillsTropical Forest Restoration in the Asia-Pacific Region

D. Lamb, University of Queensland, Brisbane, QLD, Australia

Features7 Describes new approaches to help overcome forest degradation in

the Asia-Pacific region7 Reviews reforestation strategies used in different places, exploring

the scope for using these in other ecological, socio-economic situations7 Addresses trade-offs in balancing the need for economic gains from

reforestation with the need to restore forest cover to conserve bio- diversity

In Regreening the Bare Hills: Tropical Forest Restoration in the Asia-Pacific Region, David Lamb explores how reforestation might be carried out both to conserve biological diversity and to improve the livelihoods of the rural poor. While both issues have attracted consider-able attention in recent years, this book takes a significant step, by integrating ecological and silvicultural knowledge within the context of the social and economic issues that can determine the success or failure of tropical forest landscape restoration. Describing new approaches to the reforestation of degraded lands in the Asia-Pacific tropics, the book reviews current approaches to reforestation throughout the region, paying particu-lar attention to those which incorporate native species – including in multi-species planta-tions. It presents case studies from across the Asia-Pacific region and discusses how the silvicultural methods needed to manage these ‘new’ plantations will differ from conventional methods. It also explores how reforestation might be made more attractive to smallholders and how trade-offs between production and conservation are most easily made at a land-scape scale. The book concludes with a discussion of how future forest restoration may be affected by some current ecological and socio-economic trends now underway. The book represents a valuable resource for reforestation managers and policy makers wish-ing to promote these new silvicultural approaches, as well as for conservationists, develop-ment experts and researchers with an interest in forest restoration. Combining a theoretical-research perspective with practical aspects of restoration, the book will be equally valuable to practitioners and academics, while the lessons drawn from these discussions will have relevance elsewhere throughout the tropics.

well as electrical and energy engineering 7 Author is known worldwide as a leader in the field of electricity markets

Decision Making Under Uncertainty in Electricity Markets provides models and procedures to be used by electricity market agents to make informed decisions under uncertainty. These procedures rely on well established stochastic programming models, which make them ef-ficient and robust. Particularly, these techniques allow electricity producers to derive offering strategies for the pool and contracting decisions in the futures market. Retailers use these techniques to derive selling prices to clients and energy procurement strategies through the pool, the futures market and bilateral contracting. Using the proposed models, consumers can derive the best energy procurement strategies using the available trading floors. The market operator can use the techniques proposed in this book to clear simultaneously en-ergy and reserve markets promoting efficiency and equity. The techniques described in this book are of interest for professionals working on energy markets, and for graduate students in power engineering, applied mathematics, applied economics, and operations research.
