Health
High blood pressure (also
known as hypertension) is de-
fined by blood pressure
≥ 140/90mmHg. It affects ap-
proximately 1 in 3 Australians
adults and is more common in
men and older adults. Nearly
70% of people with high blood
pressure have uncontrolled high
blood pressure.
Why is blood pressure im-
portant?
High blood pressure is a major
cause of cardiovascular disease.
It is a risk factor for heart at-
tacks, stroke, chronic kidney dis-
ease, heart failure, blindness
and premature death. People
with high blood pressure usually
have no symptoms until compli-
cations occur.
High Blood Pressure
Dr Madhara Weerasinghe
What causes high blood pressure?
The majority of patients have high blood pressure
due to a combination of risk factors. Some risk fac-
tors are pre-determined (cannot be changed):
Age
Gender (men > women before menopause)
Ethnicity (e.g. Indian sub-continent)
Family history
However, there are many risk factors for high blood pressure that can be changed:
Smoking
Alcohol
Overweight/obesity
Poor diet (high in salt)
Sedentary
Recreational drug use
Diabetes
Depression and stress
In some people, high blood pressure develops be-
cause of certain medical conditions (e.g. thyroid
and kidney disease) or medications (e.g. steroids).
How do you manage high blood pressure?
Managing high blood pressure is important in re-
ducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and
premature death. There are many things you can
do to help reduce your blood pressure.
Lifestyle modification
Physical activity:
150-300min of moderate intensity activity per week
Weight control:
waist circumference <90cm in males, <80cm in fe-males and BMI <25
Healthy diet: 5 serves of vegetables and 2 serves of fruit daily and limiting salt intake
Smoking cessation
Limit alcohol intake: no more than 2 standard drinks per day
Medications Some patients may also need medica-tions to control their blood pressure.
Adults should have their blood pressure meas-ured at least every 2 years.
Make a positive impact on your health today by vis-iting your doctor to discuss how you can change your risk factors for high blood pressure.
