Growing a Rule of Life

The best thing any of us can do in the season of Lent is to take on some kind of spiritual exercise or

discipline. Usually, we think of Lent in terms of giving up, of fasting from some vice, pleasure, or such.

This is fine, as far as it goes. But a really good Lent, I think, invites us to a positive embrace of spiritual

discipline, not just a brief denial of a pleasure.

Bishop Hollingsworth has invited us to join with Episcopalians all over Ohio, all over the country, in

a shared spiritual exercise this Lent. Growing a Rule of Life is a seven week program produced through

a collaboration between the Virginia Theological Seminary and the Society of Saint John the Evangelist

(an order of Episcopal monks). The program begins on Ash Wednesday, February 10, and concludes at

Easter. I have purchased sufficient participant books for every household in the parish. The books will

be available in church on January 24th.

To facilitate this program, and as an experiment, I am making a change in our normal weekly

schedule. For some time now, I have been wondering whether our Wednesday 9:30 a.m. Eucharist

meets parish needs. I love this service, but the faithful community that attends it has dwindled to less

than a half-dozen. Many Wednesdays, there may be just me and one other

person present. I have wondered if more folks

might take advantage of this worship opportunity at

the beginning, end, or middle of the day. So,

beginning on February 17, the Holy Eucharist will

be celebrated every Wednesday at 7:00 a.m. and

6:00 p.m. in the Bethlehem Chapel. We will

continue this pattern through Holy Week. We can

decide at that point whether a permanent change

makes sense.

For those taking part in Growing a Rule of Life, both

Wednesday services will be followed by a time for

eating, fellowship and conversation. In the morning,

we'll have coffee and pastries. In the evening, we will

have a light supper. As we eat, we'll spend about 45

minutes talking together about what we're learning and experiencing in the Rule program.

Other Lenten opportunities abound. I know many of you had a great time last year with Lent Madness,

the light-hearted riff on "March Madness" that takes you through a tournament style bracket of holy men and

holy women vying for the coveted "Golden Halo." You can find it once again at www.lentmadness.org. For

those of you who prefer the reading route, I highly commend to you The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything,

by Fr. James Martin, a concise, easy to read, fun introduction to Ignatian Spirituality.

I pray for you all a most holy season of Lent. However you increase your attention to fasting,

almsgiving, and prayer, I pray it will bring you closer in these holy weeks to our Lord, who desires nothing

greater than to draw close to you.

Your Brother in Christ,

February Outreach Focus of the Month:

COUNCIL OF CHILDREN IN NEED

ASSOCIATION

(C.O.C.I.N.A.)

Cultivating Hope in Haiti,

One Life at a Time

COCINA is once again our monthly Outreach

Focus Partner. It is a nationwide group of Christian

people who have united to support an extraordinary

ministry in Arrondissement Ouanaminthe, an

impoverished city of 120,000 people in the

northeastern corner of Haiti. Parishioners Karen

Bradley and Tom Norton have, for years, been

supporters and board members of this ministry.

At the end of February, Karen Bradley and Keith

Owen will travel for a week to Ouanaminthe for

what we hope will be the first of several future

mission trips by St. Peter's folk.

Since 1994, COCINA has focused on three

principal missions: education, healthcare, and

economic development. COCINA supports Institut

Univers, a kindergarten - grade 13 school which

currently hosts 2300 students. Many IU graduates

are sponsored to come to the United States for

college, returning to Haiti in the hopes of seeding

future development there.

Univers Centre Medical provides primary and

emergency care for 35,000 patient visits each year.

COCINA economic development efforts help

local folks start and build small businesses.

COCINA members were recently instrumental in

building and operating a large capacity bakery,

providing jobs and affordable food for the

community. Many of the IU graduates who attend

college in the U.S. return home with skills and

knowledge to start these businesses.

In addition to your weekly loose plate gifts, we

hope to collect some basic items such as printer ink

cartridges, batteries, and simple school supplies.

Stay tuned for news about this in church on

Sundays.

If you'd like to learn more, visit the COCINA

website at http://www.haiticocina.org. Check out

some of the literature that will be available in the

undercroft, or contact Karen Bradley.

Please pray for Keith and Karen, and the nationwide

team they will join, when they visit Ouanaminthe

from February 27 - March 3.

I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to

the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and

repentance, by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by

reading and meditating on God’s Holy Word.

Nancy’s Corner

“When you find yourself

more likely to cling to

schedules, rules, lists, and

personal agendas rather

than to the needs of those

around you, beware. There

is something amiss in

the compass of your heart.” Joan Chittister

The Radical Christian Life: A Year With Saint

Benedict

How easy it is to forget what is important in lives,

our own and those standing in front of us. In this

season of political shouting, it is very apparent that

there is "something amiss in the compass of many

hearts".

The reality of intolerance and hate-speak that has

grabbed such a large part of the citizenry gives rise

to the need for some Lenten disciplines that might

help 'turn folks around' whatever the religious

preferences.

The reality is that Lent is upon us earlier this

year, and cannot come too soon. The Book of

Common Prayer is clear (p.265) in its invitation to

"the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination

and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial;

and by reading and meditating on God's holy

Word."

Too many seem clueless about how to make time

for prayer and self-examination, and meditating on

God's holy Word. So here are some easy

suggestions: grab a copy of the Forward Day By

Day to read daily. If your work requires a commute

use the quiet times in your car to self-examine those

things done and left undone that need remembering

and perhaps changing.

Try the Lenten discipline suggested by Bishop

Mark, “Growing a Rule of Life". This series can be

done at home or on a lunch break. Ask Fr. Keith to

get the workbook for you or go to the Diocese of

Ohio's web page. A Rule is a way to make your

spiritual life something more than a hit or miss

experience. A Rule is a path to follow even when

Lent is over. It is a way to structure a life lived as a

disciple between Sundays.

If you are like most of us, there is never enough

time to focus on the love of God for each of us.

However, this could be the Lent that changes, you

and so those around you, as you move into a new

reality not dictated by the social media. May our

hearts heal as we continue to become Jesus’

disciples in a world so very much in need.

~ Nancy H. Wittig

Children’s Ash Wednesday Service

We will meet in the undercroft at 7:30 p.m. Parents

may drop off their children Kindergarten thru 5th

grade and then head upstairs to the sanctuary.

The children (and leaders) will discuss the season

of Lent and how we will put away the word

“Alleluia” (we will literally put the word away letter

by letter into envelopes and into a box to be tucked

away in a special place at the child’s home until

Easter morning). At this same station the children

will make a prayer chain containing their prayers

that we will "tear off" each Sunday and read during

the 40 days of Lent (this will remain here at church;

it will not to go home).

We will move through four more interactive

stations experiencing, water, oil, light, and the

imposition of Ashes. If time lends itself we will

read a short story about Lent.

Childcare will be offered for infant/toddler/pre-K

during the Ash Wednesday evening service. If you

have any questions, please contact Michelle.

Coffee Hour

Below are our host families for February &

March. We will not have host families on

our breakfast Sundays as we have found

that there are enough leftovers from

breakfast. Also, there will no

coffee hour on Palm Sunday

March 20 & Easter March 27.

Just to remind us all how this

works: 6 households will be assigned

each Sunday. No one will have to do this more than

a couple times each year. We ask that you plan to

bring along with you on Sunday a plate of

something to put out for coffee hour. Baking is no

required, but is always welcomed! The items you

bring can be as simple as a bag of goldfish crackers,

fresh fruit such as grapes, baby carrots and dip,

grapes, crackers & cheese, you name it. Just bring

enough to share with maybe two dozen people, and

please make sure it’s ready to service(i.e., on a

platter, sliced, whatever). All you have to do is

leave the item in the kitchen before church. The

verger will take care of putting things out and

cleaning up (though you are always welcome to

help!) Tom Newman will help out by getting the

coffee & lemonade started. THANK YOU Tom!

If you cannot cover your assigned Sunday, it

would be most helpful if you call someone and

switch Sundays. You many opt entirely out of the

rotation simply by contacting Amanda Chambers
