CYC EDUCATION is the education arm of CYC Burleigh and incorporates Outdoor Education Stays, Day Programs and first aid and outdoor recreation training and qualifications designed specifically for educators and students. Although CYC Burleigh has been operating outdoor education programs from its site at Burleigh Heads for the best part of 45 years, CYCEDUCATION was officially launched in 2011. Specialising in educational experiences designed to challenge, develop and excite, our Education Officers develop programs specifically suited to your school’s needs and deliver these programs in environments from the bush to the beach. Each program is designed with the group’s desired outcomes in mind whilst being underpinned by safety, relevant curriculum and activities designed to extend each individual.

Our beach location nestled in the Burleigh Heads National Park, within walking distance of the famed Burleigh Heads surf break and the beautiful Tallebudgera Creek, offers a unique spot from which to launch your stay. Activities such as canoeing, surfing, stand up paddle surfing, tubing, snorkelling, mini surf carnivals, team building and raft building are a great starting point from which to extend students with tasks such as “The Amazing Race” and the “Recon: CYC Island”. Trips to the hinterland, Surfers Paradise, or the numerous theme parks take only minutes in the bus. However, we are not locked in to this site. CYCEDUCATION believes there is more to school camping and outdoor

WELCOMEeducation than the beach and theme parks and as such, regularly takes advantage of the near by Gold Coast Hinterland to lead schools on bush orientated, adventure based expeditions.

Our bush location, conveniently located 5 minutes from the Pacific Motorway, 15 minutes from the Gold Coast Airport and 10 minutes from either Fingal or Coolangatta, develops students sense of self reliance and resilience while performing tasks such as canoeing, bush walking, orienteering, bridge building, problem solving and team work. Each program is again tailored to suit your groups individual needs with the choice of back to base camping or expedition style where students carry with them everything they need for their trip, including their accommodation!

CYC EDUCATION’S staff are perhaps our greatest asset. A committed group of Christians, dedicated to ensuring each student has an experience they will remember for the rest of their life, each staff member is passionate about seeing students develop throughout the course of their stay. If you would like more information regarding CYC EDUCATION, please contact the office on 07 5535 1324, or [email protected].

CYC has Educational Officers on staff to help you plan your camp, everything from designing the perfect program to completing risk assessments or CARA’s, our team is here to help. Many schools book a face-to-face meeting with our Educational Officers to make this process as painless as possible. If you would like an Education Officer to pay you a visit, phone or email the office using the details below.

Alternatively, if you like what you see already and would prefer secure your spot straight away, tentative bookings can be made by contacting the office on:

Heads National Park, students snorkel along the bank and over rock formations to get an uninterrupted view of the abundant sea life of the creek.

BODY BOARDING ::Fun, Fun, Fun! Students build on their knowledge of the ocean while developing their skills of wave catching, wave riding, bottom turns, cut backs and drop knees! Closely supervised by our instructors, student’s safety is our number one priority.

FISHING :: Relax along the bank of the Tallebudgera Creek or Tweed River while wetting a line! Each student is taught the basics of fishing with a rod and reel, shown how to cast, learns how to bait a hook and will hopefully land that big one! Teachers can participate or sit back and tell the students about the one that got away!

TEAM BUILDING :: A great way to establish, or build on the group’s unity and cohesiveness. Team Building is a beach-based activity and takes advantage of the wide open beaches of Tallebudgera and Burleigh Heads. CYC EDUCATION’S instructors will take your group through each of the stations, while encouraging group participation and cooperation.

INITIATIVE GAMES :: Complements Team Building perfectly. One based on land, the other based on the beach and in the ocean, Initiative Games encourages a student’s social development and problem solving skills.

activities

CANOEING :: An old favourite, enjoyed by students for many years. Students not only develop the necessary skills specific to canoeing, but also learn that team work is always more effective than working as an individual.

THE AMAZING RACE :: Combining canoeing, raft building, catapults and navigation, students race around the Tallebudgera creek in an effort to perform a series of challenges. This activity is a progression on both canoeing and raft building and further develops a student’s communication, cooperation and social engagement skills.

RECON - CYC ISLAND :: Using skills learnt while canoeing, students navigate their way along the Tallebudgera Creek using compasses and clues gathered along the way. The final destination will reveal a mission almost impossible. A big hit with the students!

SURFING :: One of those activities that’s a winner with everyone, no matter what their age! Surfing develops a student’s sense of balance and core strength and fosters an attitude of resilience. If at first you don’t succeed, try again! Students love the chance to get among the waves and ride a board all the way to the beach.

STAND UP PADDLE BOARDING :: The newest activity to the CYC line up. Stand Up Paddle Surfing (SUP) is one of the most enjoyable things you can do on the water, its suitable for all ages, in fact kids are often better at it than adults! SUP develops a student’s sense of balance and core strength and is a great way to facilitate personal attributes such as endurance and perseverance.

TUBING :: Students (& teachers) love racing around the ski lanes of the Tallebudgera Creek behind our boat. Teams of two or three jump in and hang on as our skillful drivers weave their magic. Of course, safety is our number one priority here at CYC and as such we are continually reviewing our activities to guarantee maximum participant safety whilst ensuring that everyone has the time of their lives!

RAFT BUILDING ::One of the all time great team-building activities. CYC EDUCATION’S raft building is raft building with a difference! Our instructors will ensure each student leaves with a sense of accomplishment and some new found skills both physical and social.

SNORKELING ::Participants experience the wonders lurking beneath the surface of the Tallebudgera Creek. Launching from Echo Beach, in the Burleigh

ISLAND CANOE ADVENTURE :: Enjoy a leisurely 4.5 hour canoe adventure in and around Scott’s Island. Ducking under low lying branches and vines, winding your way through narrow tributaries and hopefully spotting a platypus! This is canoeing like you’ve never experienced!

ENVIRONMENTAL EXPERIENCES :: CYC partners with Second Nature Asia Pacific to deliver some of the best environmental education programs around. Whether its traversing the rocky shores of the Burleigh Headland, paddling the mangroves of Currumbin or Tallebudgera creeks, exploring the Burleigh Heads National Park or investigating the built environments of the Gold Coast, we’ve got you covered. Our programs align with the current Queensland curriculum and are designed to meet your school’s specific needs.

TRIVIA NIGHT ::A night of great laughs, fun and the odd piece of trivia. Our staff will design and facilitate a trivia night suited to your school’s age, cultural identity and location to ensure your students get the most out of the night.

MOVIE NIGHT ::A great way to wind down after a hectic few days of non-stop activities. Watch a movie on the big screen in our Recreation Room. Students bring pillows and blankets and settle in for a relaxing night complete with popcorn. A great final night activity, CYC staff will arrange a movie for your group with consultation.

LIFEGUARD SURF SAFETY TALKS :: One of the most important aspects to any visit to the Gold Coast. Gold Coast City Council Life Guards instruct students on all aspects of the beach and ocean from rips and currents to stings, bites and the sun. Lifeguards will come to CYC or your students can visit them at the beach. A must for all camps.

MINI SURF CARNIVAL :: You can’t come to the Gold Coast and not experience a Mini Surf Carnival! Our instructors will lead your group through the carnival incorporating events such as flag races, ocean swims, beach runs, tug of war, surf rescue relays and board races. The Mini Surf Carnival builds on the knowledge gained from the Lifeguard Surf Safety Talks and enables students to experience first hand, the elements of the ocean in a safe and controlled environment.

BRIDGE BUILDING :: All that stands between you and your campsite is a deep, fast flowing treacherous creek. You must cross it to reach your destination! Work with your group to build a bridge that will not only support your weight, but the weight of your whole team!

ORIENTEERING/NAVIGATION :: Using maps and compasses students navigate their ways through the natural beauty of CYC’s Bush Campus, performing a series of tasks along the way.

activitiesKARAOKE NIGHT :: A crowd favourite! What student doesn’t want to get up on stage and perform in front of their friends? Can be run either as an individual activity or as a cabin group activity. This activity quickly becomes all-inclusive as those in the audience can’t help but jump up and join in the dancing and singing.

DANCE PARTY :: Experience the sights and sounds of one of CYC’s legendary Dance Parties. Lights, smoke machines, mirror balls - we’ve got it all. Each party is designed to represent your school’s demographic and taste in music from hip hop to country, to rock or top 40. Teachers can supervise from the perimeter or get down with the kids!

NIGHT BEACH WALKS :: Experience Burleigh beach at night. CYC instructors will lead the students on a beach walk to North Burleigh and back, incorporating games along the way. Students are kept entertained by glow sticks and are closely monitored by teachers and instructors.

THEME PARKS :: Take advantage of CYC’s proximity to the theme parks of the Gold Coast. Within 30 minutes, you can be at Dream World, Movie World, Wet ‘n’ Wild, Outback Spectacular or Sea World. Each of these parks have relevant educational applications, resources and pricing. CYC can take care of your reservations, educational needs and transport so all you have to worry about is having fun.
