WoodlandParklandThere are a number of beautifulwoodlands around Potters Bar to beexplored, amongst them Gobions Wood,Furzefield Wood and Fir & Pond Woods.Discover these ancient places whichprovide a home for rare and specialwildlife and provide quiet places for usto recharge our batteries.

During the 19th Century closeness toLondon and the ease of travel by coachand rail, made this a popular area forbuilding country houses. Although manyof the mansions have now disappearedthe parkland landscape can still be foundto the north near Gobions Wood and tothe south at Wrotham Park.

Protected by the Green Belt, much ofthe landscape around the town is stillfarmed. Along with different arablecrops you can see sheep, horses andcattle grazing in the fields. The RoyalVeterinary College has a base here,contributing to animal care and welfareand is the largest of its kind in the UK.

HOLLY BLUEFound widely on heath and in hedgerows, this brightlycoloured butterfly is,predictably, very fond ofholly bushes were they canoften be found.

GIPSYWORTSimilar in look to mint but without the aroma, this plant grows in marshes and by fresh water.

BROWN LONG-EARED BATRoosting in trees and buildings by day, the long-eared bat hunts by night and is such a good aviator that it can even hover to take insects off leaves

Gobins WoodConservation Area:Gobions Wood is a beautiful woodland of 17hectares. Part of it is ancient (over 400 yearsold) and encloses the remains of the 18thcentury Pleasure Gardens that were part ofthe historical Gobions Estate. It is nowowned and managed as a conservation areaby the Gobions Woodland Trust.Look out for: 90 species of bird 5 speciesof bat including Brown Long-Eared &Daubentons Common Newts 143 speciesof fungi including Puff balls, Boleti &Brackets over 19 species of butterflyincluding Speckled Wood & Holly Blue.Nearby are: Gobions Open Space & LeachFields with 100 species of wild flower &grass.

Fir & Pond WoodLocal Nature Reserve: This is the best remaining part of the ancienthunting ground of Enfield Chase. There arewoodland, meadow and wetland habitatssupporting an abundance of wildlife. Thereserve is managed by the Herts & MiddlesexWildlife Trust.Look out for: Oak & Hornbeam woodland

great birdlife including Woodpeckers,Sparrowhawks & Warblers Dragonfliesincluding the Ruddy Darter lake plantsincluding Common Reedmace & Gipsywort.

Wrotham Park:Set at the heart of Wrotham Park privateestate is the Palladian Mansion built byAdmiral John Byng in 1754. It is probablethat the Admiral never lived here as he wassentenced to death shortly after itscompletion. This was by order of the King,for negligence in battle against the French.The Park and Mansion are now used forprivate events such as weddings and fundays. It has recently featured in films such asBridget Jone's Diary and the Oscar-winningGosford Park.

Furzefield Wood & LowerHalfpenny Bottom Local Nature Reserve:Furzefield Wood is a wonderful mosaic ofhabitats that has been managed as traditionalhazel coppice with standard trees forgenerations.Look out for: 30 species of bird enjoythe scents & colours of over 150 species ofplant & tree spot a variety of insects, fungi& mammal.
