Empowering Women Through Service and Advocacy

A word from your A word from your A word from your PresidentPresidentPresident

Zonta International envisions a world in which women's rights are recognized as human rights and every woman is able

to achieve her full potential. In such a

world, women have access to all resources and are repre-sented in decision making positions on an equal basis with men. No woman lives in fear of violence.

For me, reading the ZI Vision confirms why I joined Zonta and I hope it does the same for you. I look forward to our Zonta Awareness updates at our monthly meetings where we will be reminded regularly of the positive impact we are having and our contribution to enhancing women’s lives locally and across the globe.

Did you know that ZI endorses the “He For She” Campaign? Last year UN Women created this campaign as a way of engaging men and boys to “stand up in addressing the inequalities and discrimination faced by women and girls.” While women are often leaders of change, to bring about cultural change, men and boys need to be engaged.

Our International Women’s Day Breakfast is an inclusive event and an

opportunity to support this Zonta goal.

Strategic planning is important for our Zonta organisation to progress. The 2016-2018 District 23 Goals are based on Zonta International’s Biennial Goals and our Area and Club goals are aligned with those. The Area 3 Workshop on March 25 and the District 23 Conference September 1-3 will be stimulating events where like-minded women can meet and discuss these Zonta goals. They will also pro-vide an excellent opportunity to ’value add’ to your membership.

Thank you all for your active partici-pation in our Club Planning Meeting and I hope that you are enthused by the agreed goals and processes.

March 8 will be upon us before we know it! We need 10 or more tables of 8 for breakfast at The Rendezvous Hotel in Scarborough. Would you like to share a morning of celebration and collabora-tion with us? It’s easy—all you have to do is go to this link and book. Why not make up a table of 8 friends—family / colleagues, and enjoy a unique start to your day?

The theme for this year’s IWD is -

“Women in the Changing World of Work: Planet 50-50 by 2030”.

There are huge implications for women’s economic empowerment with regards new fiscal and trade policies, unstable livelihoods and incomes, and environmental issues. We are in the midst of a technological and digital

revolution as well as globalization, all of which will impact women’s work.

Did you know that globally the gender pay gap stands at 24%? Women need to be recognised for their unpaid care and domestic work, and policies need to be put in place to address these and the many other gender gap anomalies.

The Planet 50-50 by 2030—STEP IT UP

FOR GENDER EQUALITY initiative

shows that 93 world leaders have made

concrete commitments to overcome

gaps in gender equality. More can be

read about this through this link.

Our speaker on 8 March is the CEO of the

Zonta House Refuge Association, Kelda Oppermann. There is no-one better qualified than Kelda to speak about the

empowerment of women. Kelda will offer insights into the complexities of supporting women at risk in our community and sharing her leadership in empowerment, change and capacity building.

To celebrate our own Zonta Rose Day

and help in Zonta’s work to empower women, think about making a donation to the Rose Fund. You can do this by clicking here.

As they say—“A woman’s work is

never done!” I wonder when we can ever expect our work to be done—at least in the short term with initiatives like Planet 50-50, we hope a lot of progress will be made by 2030—but don’t hold your breath!

Zonta—Club Awareness

One of the suggestions at our Planning Meeting was to raise awareness about our global organisation. In setting up a roster of members who have been asked to present a session, Vicki said—

“I am sure we are all going to enjoy 10

minutes of new information about Zonta and our fellow Zontians. It is

worthwhile to remind ourselves of the good we are doing and the positive

changes we support in the world. We

are pretty amazing!”

These sessions will be an opportunity to enhance members’ knowledge of the many aspects of Zonta International and to remind us of what Zonta is about and the fabulous work being done by other clubs. They may have one or two parts, ie

Choose any Zonta club and tell us who/where they are and one thing they are doing. (If it is of particular interest, this one club may take the whole 10 minutes.)

Choose any topic of interest about Zonta.

Vicki has listed a number of topics from which the presenters can choose. They go from .......

the meaning of Zonta; details of the Emblem; ZI’s Leadership & Structure; interesting snippets from overseas

and local clubs; what has our International President

said in her Blog; information about our District

Conference; information about the International

Convention in Japan; news from our adjacent Districts 22

and 24; our own District structure; what’s happening in Area 3 and its

clubs;

and everything in between!

While new members receive an inform-ation pack when they are inducted, and a Mentor is assigned to that person, we rarely keep members at large ‘educated’ on a regular basis. How many members visit Zonta websites in their own time to keep abreast of what is happening—

not only locally, but worldwide? Time is the essence for most people in this fast and technological age in which we live. All these fantastic gadgets for commu-nication and yet it is difficult to put the time aside to explore more casually.

This initiative will help to solve this issue by incorporat-ing an awareness segment into each meeting. The lucky members who have been chosen to do the research will become full bottles on Zonta’s structure and work! It will also provide on-going education for all Club members in a group environment which is always a pleasant way to learn. One thought though.......as a former primary school Principal, will Vicki set us some exam questions at the end of the year?

If you haven’t visited the ZI website for some time—or never (more’s the pity!), set aside an hour one day/evening and

discover what’s at your finger-tips! You can learn so much. Click the logo for access.

Zontians in the News

Botany Bay Club (D24) member, Ann Selle, has been recognised with an OAM in the recent Australia Day Honours. She was a founding member of the Botany Bay Club serving as President, Vice-President and Treasurer and has represented her Club as dele-gate to a number of conferences and conventions.

Ann was instrumental in designing and co-ordinating the Zonta breast care cushion project and we all know what a wonderful initiative that has been.

Another D24 Zontian from the Zonta Club of Nepean Valley—Valerie George—

also received an OAM for her services to

women’s health and the wider commu-nity. Valerie has also co-ordinated the sewing of breast

cushions for her club.

CONGRATULATIONS to both of these ladies for their Australia Day Awards, not to mention their dedicated Zonta and other service over so many years.

In our December ‘Zontapreneur’ (p.4), there was an article about Zonta Inter-national’s Jane M. Klausman Scholarship. It was mentioned that Rachel Chong, our District winner nominated by the ZC of Hobart Derwent was unsuccessful at the International level.

Subsequent to this, Wendy Quinn (D23 JMK Commit-tee Chairman) announced that because of a very close result and

after consultation with D23 Governor Judy Gorton, they would award two District scholarships. The other candi-date was Gemma Tually/Stabler, shown here receiving her Area 3 Award from Donella Caspersz (Area Co-ordinator) from the Zonta Club of Perth.

Another member of the Perth Club—Lennie McCall AM, along with Ruth Reid OAM and Sue Moray OAM FRCNA, were given Honorary Status of the Freeman of the City of Nedlands. This Award is the highest honour that the City of Nedlands can give to a member of the community. Read more about these here.

Debbie Mason also from the Perth Club, founder of Starting Over Support (SOS), was awarded The City of Bayswater’s 2017 Australia Day Citizen of the Year. In

just three short years Debbie has helped over 200 domestic violence victims set up homes with household goods and furni-ture. Read more about the awards here.

We can be very proud of all of these Zontians and their achievements.

Last meeting Alma Dempsey announced that she and Mal had celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary! Now that’s a lot of years—60 in fact, hitched to the same bloke! I reckon they should have been given a diamond mine! How-ever, Alma was chuffed (and Mal too I assume), to have received greetings from the Queen and Governor-General.

Hearty CONGRATULATIONS Alma—and Mal—on this wonderful milestone.

Our new venue at the Wembley Golf Club (‘Ambrose Estate’) for our first meeting last month, got a tick of approval from everyone. The room was ideally set up and suited our needs very well. Hilda and Irene were especially pleased with the in situ projector screen. We were given a choice of mains (something we will need to tweak from a timing point of view) both of which were delicious and more than adequate. The staff were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble.

There is plenty of parking but with so many golfers and others using these facilities, bays in the upper section were hard to spot. However, there always seemed to be someone leaving so a little patience was required. Having said that some of us arrived early at 6 pm so many golfers were still on the course.

Vicki has asked members for feedback and a small committee has been set up to explore venues further north. Ideas and suggestions would be welcomed.

Jean and her Service Committee reported a very successful six weeks of this campaign display. Between October and November this was kindly accepted for several days at each of the following venues—

Duncraig Library Mirrabooka Library Woodvale Library Joondalup Library Whitfords Library Ishar Multicultural Women’s

Health Centre

It was also displayed at The Boulevard Centre in Floreat during our Tray Sale/Auction/ Exhibition.

The literature that accompa-nied the display with stories from some survivors of domestic violence, was well received by

the public. The display was exposed to many people in the northern suburbs all of whom took a keen interest in it. We passed the display onto the ZC of Swan Hills who will undertake to reach people around their area over a month or two.

Good news for YWPA AwardeeGood news for YWPA AwardeeGood news for YWPA Awardee

Rosalinda Wren who was our 2010 YWPA Awardee has scooped the pool and found a job with the ATO in Brisbane! She applied for the Graduate posi-tion as one of 5000 applicants across Australia and after an intense and comprehensive selection process she won the job! She left Perth at the end of January—heartbreaking for her family and friends, but so exciting for Ros! Well done Ros and good luck for the future! Keep us posted.

Jenny Gleeson has agreed to look into what grants may be available for us to tap into to augment our service funds. Thank you Jenny for immediately volun-teering for this task. If other members

have any contacts, or would like to give Jenny a hand, please give her a ring.

Jenny has also moved house recently, runs own business—Lifeworx and sits on the Refuge Association Board, so she’s a pretty busy lady!

In preparation for her new role in 2018 as President, Linda is transitioning the speaker progam to Sue Pertilé and Robbie. This is going extremely well at present with speakers already engaged for March (details to be circulated next week), April, June and July. August will be our usual Young Women in Public Affairs Award night. If you have any speaker suggestions then contact Sue or Robbie.

On the fundraising front, Palma and Jenny will jointly run a Mystery Dinner following such a great success last year at Palma’s home. It is hoped more members will take up the challenge as these are excellent ‘OPM’ events (other people’s money)!

Marion is seeking a willing volunteer to take over co-ordination of Entertain-ment Books.

Another very successful Amelia Earhart event was enjoyed by all on 29 January at Ruth and Kevin Thomas’ home in Mt Lawley. It is such a beautiful setting overlooking the Swan River. This is the second time PNS and Swan Hills have shared this celebration/fundraiser. The inclement weather wasn’t an issue although chairs and tables had to be re-arranged under cover—just in case!

What a great idea to combine

this event, once again, with Swan Hills. We had such an enjoyable evening with Zontians from Bunbury, Peel and Perth, as well as other guests. We had the same caterers as last year

Sue and John Pertilé

Sandra Burns with the ‘Most Useful Raffle Prize in the World’ (toilet rolls, tissues, toothpaste, etc.)

and we weren’t disappointed. It was quite a feast with

trays of succulent meats, an assortment of healthy salads,

hot potatoes, bread rolls and a selection of scrummy

desserts. There was plenty left over for ‘doggie bags’!

Huge thanks go to Ruth and her Club members and Marion from our Club for organising this event and all the others who were involved and helped set up the tables. These things just don’t happen—a lot of

planning and work goes into them. All

very worthwhile as we made a respect-

able $960 for the Amelia Earhart

Fellowship Program.

Amelia HighlightsAmelia HighlightsAmelia Highlights

Ruth Thomas and John Scrivener into the leftovers!

On 11 January 1935, Amelia embarked on a 2,408-mile trip to Oak-land, California, from Honolulu. The next day she became the first person to fly across both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. This

trip also made her the first person to fly to the United States mainland from Hawaii.

To commemorate these achievements, Zonta celebrates 11 January as Amelia Earhart Day when we remember her contri-butions to the aerospace industry, as well as the empowerment of women in science.

Since the establishment of the Amelia

Earhart Fellowships in 1938, Zonta has awarded 1,508— totaling more than US$9.3 million—to 1,079 women from seventy countries. Our donation will contribute in a meaningful way to these Fellowships.

I was curious about what benefits a ‘Freeman’ of a city got and was interested to learn that -

“There are a number of rights traditionally but apocryphally associated with freemen—the right to drive sheep and cattle over London Bridge; to a silken rope, if hanged; to carry a naked sword in public; or that if the City of London Police finds a freeman drunk and incapable, they will

bundle him or her into a taxi and send them home rather than throw them into a cell.”

All long before Lennie’s time so she won’t need to worry about taking up these ‘rights’!
