OCT‐DEC 2018 CREATING OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH DIGNITY ISSUE 4
A WORD FROM OUR DIRECTOR: MR SUSHIL RAMOLA
“Domestic work is probably the most unsung vocation. The perception hasn’t changed much from the time our mothers did it to when trained women and sometimes men are doing it in our homes for a living. On the other hand, people in this sector are the gurus of multi-tasking and efficiency, probably working the longest hours away from their own homes and families, often in an environment which is exploitative, as the sector is unorganised. Yet they make amongst the best contribution to our well-being, in many ways what our mothers did. They surely deserve more respect and recognition for what they do.
DWSSC was set up with a vision to provide a platform by bringing all the stakeholders together for recognising this work, structuring the skills in line with emerging needs, growing them as aspirational lifelong vocations and in the process hopefully getting the recognition and respect the profession deserves.
It is heartening to see the work done by DWSSC in a short period of time in terms of reach, advocacy, engagement of diverse stakeholders and getting the right people in - people who have the passion for the sector and the entrepreneurial energy to build it. It is great to be a part of this effort through all the stages from the beginning. My compliments to Maj. Gen. Manik Sabharwal (Retd.) for leading a small team at DWSSC with focus, discipline and the fighting spirit to take them on an exciting journey. We have a long way to go and many challenges to overcome, but a great beginning has been made; and I am looking forward to the moment as more and more people come on board.”
