Feature Outline

4 Reasons Why you should get Dental Sealants for Your Kids

Seeing your child smile up at you is one of the best feelings in the world. What if you knew that it was not just an ordinary smile but a healthy one! Dental sealants reassure that your child is happy and healthy.

1. Long Lasting Healthy SmilesYou probably take your kids to the dentist twice a year to get a regular cleaning and make sure everything is looking spick and span. We all have busy schedules with ballet classes, soccer games, cello lessons, and so much more, it’s hard to fit in the things that help our kids lead healthy lives. With dental sealants you only have to get the treatment once and it can last up to 10 years.

2. Turns Those Frowns upside downIt can be like night and day when it comes to our children’s behavior when they don’t feel well versus when they feel great. Cavities can hurt like crazy which possibly leads to making your child drive you crazy. To save you both the pain of it all dental sealants protect your kid’s teeth from painful cavities. Which gives you one less problem to worry about with your children’s health.

3. Saving Money Left and RightScoring a great deal is something we parents are very proud of. Think about getting saving money on something that could positively impact your child’s health. Dental treatments aren’t cheap but there are certain treatments that prevent you from needing others. Dental seals are one of those treatments, if your child receives a seal that saves you money for up to possibly 10 years on paying for fillings due to cavities and tooth decay.

4. Catches leftover Bacteria RedhandedWe all know the golden rule of teeth brushing, once when we wake up and once before bed. But how many times do you recall asking your kids if they brushed their teeth or if they brushed them well, I’m going to guess more than you would like to. Dental seal gives them the protection they need on the days when they forget to brush or don’t brush as well as we taught them to. It reassures us that their teeth are protected from the bacteria that could harm them.

But before you call up your dentist to schedule your child’s dental seal, we want to inform you about Children’s Health Alliance Seal-A-Smile program. Seal-A-Smile is a program which dentists go into schools all across Wisconsin and provide free dental sealants for all of the students. So if you think your child’s school would benefit from receiving this program, for more information or to enter your school to receive please go to our website http://www.chawisconsin.org/sas/ or call Matt Crespin at (414) 337-4562.

Op-Ed

When I was kid my least favorite thing to do was go to the dentist because nine times out of ten I would find out I had a cavity. And getting those fillings in was a torture session every time. I would cry all the way to the dentist and I would cry all the way home from the dentist. The thing I didn’t realize until I was much older was how lucky I was to have the opportunity to go to the dentist and have that reassurance that my mouth was being taken care of and was healthy.

Many families today don’t have that opportunity to go to the dentist on a regular basis. 1 in 5 children in the U.S. go without dental care. The cost of dental care is expensive and without the right health insurance it becomes a luxury that many can’t afford.

Children with cavities may have difficulty eating, smiling, and have problems paying attention and learning at school. Children who cannot properly chew their food tend to “gulp” their food, which dramatically affects weight gain. It could also lead to respiratory infections which means that gum disease could cause you to get infections in your lungs, including pneumonia. Diabetic complications which is inflammation of the gum tissue can make it harder to control your blood sugar and make your diabetes symptoms worse.

We all know what it feels like to be sick, and we can all agree no one likes it. No one should have to be pain or at serious risk of a major health issue because they can’t afford the proper care that they need, especially a child. Children are supposed to be having fun and learning at this time in their life, not worrying over when the pain will stop.

I volunteer for the Seal-A-Smile program and to see how thankful the parents and the kids are towards

Well Seal-A-Smile is here to do just that, give children the proper dental care possible so they can go on and have the best childhood possible. Children’s Health Alliance Seal-A-Smile program. Seal-A-Smile is a program which dentists go into schools all across Wisconsin and provide free dental sealants for all of the students. I volunteer for the Seal-A-Smile program and to see how thankful the parents and the kids are towards us and what we do is tremendous. I had a mother come up to me and told me that her kids hadn’t ever been to the dentist and how her kids have had a lot of dental issues and because of this treatment they don’t have to be in pain anymore and how grateful she was for us doing this for her family. It’s interactions like that, that make you want to help as many children in need as possible.

So if you think your child’s school would benefit from receiving this program, for more information or to enter your school to receive please go to our website http://www.chawisconsin.org/sas/ or call Matt Crespin at (414) 337-4562.

-Kristin Wallace

Kristin Wallace- She has volunteered for Seal-A-Smile for 2 years but has been a dental hygienist for 15 years.

I made my author a volunteer for Seal-a-Smile so the audience could get a look at what the people behind the scenes think about the program and what it’s like to help all of these kids get dental treatment who wouldn’t usually get this treatment. And I think the fact that she’s been doing dental hygienics for 15 years qualifies her to talk about this topic.

TV Strategy

So I would get a spot on Local 5 lives segment Doing the Right Thing, I chose this segment

because they are cover the northeastern part of Wisconsin so it’s hitting the exact loc. Your

heartwarming stories about the community coming out and helping one another. This aspect

ties in perfectly to what we want to accomplish for the Seal-A-Smile program. If we get the

opportunity to be on your segment we will talk about how we want to provide dental sealants to

all children in Wisconsin’s public schools with no cost whatsoever. Along with this we will run a

contest before our segment airs for two lucky children to win a dental sealant free and we will do

the procedure while on the segment. We will also discuss the benefits a child gets of having a

dental sealant. So help your communities receive this program in your local schools and spread

dental health throughout Northeastern Wisconsin.

Media Strategies

For my Feature I would place it in several Northeastern region newspapers such as Appleton

Post-Crescent, Green Bay Press Gazette, Oshkosh’s The Northwestern, and Marinette’s the

Eagle Herald in their community or life sections. Not only would I place them in those

newspapers but I would place them on their website as well, since women tend to check a

newspaper’s website for news according to the research firm Insights in Marketing who

conducted a study of more than 2,500 women ages 18-67 to find out more about women's

preferred channels, digital preferences and the kinds of content they're likely to pass on to their

peers.

My Op-Ed piece would go in the opinion or letter to the editor sections of Appleton Post-

Crescent, Green Bay Press Gazette, Oshkosh’s The Northwestern, and Marinette’s the Eagle

Herald. I would chose this platform because I think it would be the easiest to discover for

Women as well as bringing it to the local aspect so that way teachers, administrators, local

office chairs, even students can read it and say we want to bring Seal-A-Smile to our schools. I

also think placing it on Angie’s List is a good idea because of the knowledge that it’s used to see

what other people have to say about different events and activities.

The 15 second radio commercial I created would be placed on the christian contemporary, top

40 hits, country, and public radio stations in Northeastern Wisconsin. Some examples of those

are Green Bay’s public radio 88.1 FM WHID, Neenah’s country 100.3 FM WNCY, Sturgeon

Bay’s christian contemporary, I chose these type of stations because I think it will hit a variety of

audiences. For christian contemporary and country it will possibly reach the parents of schools

that could be eligible for the program. The public radio station could reach the teachers, staff,

school board members as well as administration and plant the idea inside of their heads. As for

the top 40 hits that could reach the students listening to the radio and they could make it grow

into action.

I would want to do a talk segment on a local morning news show for my television appearance. I

chose to go with Local 5 Live and the talk segment called Doing the Right Thing, it features

people all across Northeastern wisconsin giving back to their community in one way or another

and I think the Seal-A-Smile Program would be a perfect fit for the segment and would show off

what our program does and would reach the people of Northeastern Wisconsin.

For the online video I would place it first on the Seal-a-Smile Youtube page so that way we have

it and people can start viewing it. And then I would go onto making a 30 second clip of it, and

then post it on our Facebook page so that it can be viewed and if they want to know more, there

will be a link below directing them to the Youtube video. I not only chose Youtube but Facebook

Page 7: ajohnsonportfolioblog.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewDental seals are one of ... need on the days when they forget to brush or don’t brush as ... thankful the parents and the

as well because it will get to the audience we want viewing it more because they use Facebook

more often than Youtube.
