Engagement of the Villanova Community Academic Year 2009/2010

Involvement in the Villanova community and the community at large embodies who we are as a University. This report provides a profile of the various programs and activities in which Villanova students, faculty, staff, alumni participate. These projects are separated into, Community Service and Service Learning projects. This report both updates and expands upon a report written two years ago in response to Villanova’s application to the Community Engagement Elective Classification of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. As in 2008, OPIR constructed a Project Profile form and used survey software to collect information from leaders and contact persons throughout the University. Of particular interest was obtaining an estimate of a new variable, total person hours committed to these activities. It should be noted that persons may participate in more than one program or activity during the academic year. Summarizing the individual participation across all programs can inflate counts. Conversely, the summary of hours served is not duplicative. The table below shows the number of persons participating by type of program. Student experiences exceed all other groups participating. Community Service has the largest number of participants. The total number of person experiences was 14,890.

*Individuals may participate in more than one activity in a given year.

Because COV takes volunteers on a trip by trip basis weekly participation will vary from 60 to 90 volunteers on a given week. This usually is impacted by times of more intense academic workload. The estimate of 150 is a projection of the number of different individuals to go through the program over the course of the year.

Activities Related to Planning for and Assessing This Project

Planning involves communication with site partners, training of leaders and weekly meetings, volunteer recruitment (info sessions, postings, etc.), budget & maintenance of vans, scheduling/sharing vans within department and other departments as needed, coordination of weekly soup kitchen desserts, coordination of random/frequent donations, coordination of special collections/drives (food, clothing, unbrellas, etc.) Coordination of special events (i.e. Halloween on campus or Fright Night, Basketball tickets, Balloon Day visits, etc.)

Description of funding /fundraising Vans are paid for by the Campus Ministry operational budget. No budget is allocated for COV. Fundraising is done by students, as well as financial donations and the occasional grant award.

Comments COV works with various campus groups (e.g. sorority and fraternity life, Rays of Sunshine, Business Without Borders, Villanova Environmental Group, Athletics, Residence Life, etc.) in providing opportunities for group trips. All COV leaders are required to be members of the Campus Ministry Service Council which is a Service-Social Justice-Spirituality Leadership Formation program open to all students. The Service Council also acts a a coalition of students from various organizations (VEG, COV, RUIBAL, Habitat, Rays of Sunshine, Service Learning, Villanovans for Life, etc.) that can support each others' particular organizations at varying times. The majority of partnerships have gotten stronger over time. Two new partnerships were added this year. Relationships can be diminished by turnover of students and site staff.

VAS hosted dark sky events, and performed outreach projects. VAS went into downtown philly with a few telescopes and showed celestial objects, such as Jupiter and the Moon to people passing by. The motivating factor of this project was that the members of VAS wanted to communicate its love for astronomy and share the wonders of the universe with people who may not have time in their daily schedule to admire the night sky and reflect on our place in the universe. Description of Activity Goal: collect, scan, and ship 10,000 books to Better World Books, where they can be sold to support schools in Uganda. Purpose: war has been ravaging Ugandan communities for over a quarter century, and as Africa's longest running war, hundreds of thousands have been displaced from their homes and caught in guerrilla warfare. The rebel Lord's Resistance Army has kidnapped thousands of children to fight as child soldiers, but even those who remain with their families are deprived of many opportunities. School building, then, is an initiative that will lead to children having more security and increased opportunities. This part of rebuilding in Uganda is supported by Invisible Children, and our chapter wants to be an influential and powerful part of the process. Outcomes: Last year - with an enormous rally by Villanovans and people from outside communities as well (notably Hanover, PA), we quickly surpassed our goal of 10,000 books. In fact, the project finished at 5th place in the nation with 25, 388! Next year - the Villanova Invisible Children Chapter wants to be in the top 3!! Computing Sciences Mary-Angela Papalaskari - [email protected] - 97333

Description of Activity PIVOTS programs aim to encourage more children to explore science, computing, mathematics, and engineering. Central to this mission has been the Science & Theatre Magic Program, a three-week summer camp for teenagers, affectionately referred to as the “Magic School” program, because, based on what they learn in science and theatre workshops, program participants create a performance of a magic school that they subsequently present to younger children. PIVOTS events and programs have created a community of young scholars who are committed to sharing their enthusiasm for the sciences and reaching out to younger children.

Location of Delivery Service Villanova University, 800 Lancaster Avenue, Villanova, PA 19085 Brief Description of Project Activities

The Villanova University PIVOTS initiative, now in its fifth year, hosted outreach summer activities for children from Philadelphia on July 10, 2009. Teenagers involved with our programs since 2005 (one of whom is now a Chemical Engineering student at Villanova!) participated in this day of outreach to the Philadelphia community. Nine of these students attended the program on July 10th, and together they led educational activities for a group of forty-five children from the Papa Playground Recreation Camp in West Philadelphia.

Comments RUIBAL has consistently grown every semester, and thus we are able to serve our partners to a greater capacity. We continue to need more sites. In 2009-10, a partnership was agreed upon with the Sophomore Service Learning Community which allows for their Sophomore's, who were former RUIBAL volunteers, to return as leaders in order to fulfill their SLC requirements. RUIBAL is at capacity with CM vans, as well as 4 partner sites. Essentially 10% of the Freshmen class participate in RUIBAL voluntarily. One of the major goals is to create a healthy social environment for first-year students to adjust to college life while being mentored by Sophomore leaders, simultaneously being inculturated in Villanova's culture of service.

We held two fundraisers throughout the year which ran for a week each. We also co-sponsored an event in which the Chief of Staff of the UN Secretary General's Special envoy for malaria came to speak at Villanova. We also had a photo display and speaker (Dr. Maghan Keita from the Africana Studies department) that brought awareness to the Villanova student body about the complicated issues surrounding the existence and spread of malaria.

Description of funding /fundraising We have a budget of $300 from the Center for Peace and Justice. We use that money to fund all of our projects. Any money that is raised through fundraisers is donated directly to the national Blood:Water Mission.

Comments Blood:Water Mission is one of the few organizations that we have found that dedicates a large amount of time and money to building partnerships and relationships with the people they are serving. They do not do any of the work FOR the communities with whom they work. They simply SUPPORT them. All of the wells, water catchment systems, clinics and other buildings that have been put in place will be maintained by the local people, which better ensures that they will be sustainable for many years to come. We as an organization truly believe that Blood:Water Mission is not merely a drop in the bucket, but rather a tremendously encouraging organization that makes a better future much more possible. However, we are still not that well known on campus, and the University as a whole has yet to develop a relationship with national Blood:Water Mission.

CARES Clinic for Asylum, Refugee and Emigrant Services

Year Begun 1999 Sponsoring Villanova Entity/ Individual

Villanova School of Law Michele Pistone - [email protected] - 95286

Description of Activity CARES is an international human rights and immigration clinic.Students represent refugees who have fled human rights abuses in their home countries and seek religious or political asylum in the United States. Working in pairs, CARES students are assigned to represent from beginning to end one or more refugees, who are fleeing human rights abuses, in a court proceeding before an Immigration Judge. Every semester the work of CARES students results in restoring the lives of their clients and reuniting their clients with family members. In the past, CARES has represented and won asylum for refugees from countries including Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Colombia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Guatemala, Guinea, Haiti, Honduras, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Liberia, Mauritania, Mexico, Nicaragua, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, The Ivory Coast, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. Global conditions, among other factors, will determine where CARES concentrates its resources. Students are exposed to the practice of law, enabling them to reflect on the interaction between practice and theory and on the role of the lawyer in our society. Each clinic includes classroom sessions, tutorial meetings with the faculty member, and classroom work on assigned cases. Students work in various legal settings, allowing the students to apply what they have learned in the classroom and to experience the satisfaction of functioning as a professional. In furtherance of the statement by St Thomas of Villanova, " the Lord hears the cry of the poor," the clinic's mission is to help law students become reflective, ethical, creative, zealous, and justifiably confident advocates who value pro bono and public interest work, through service and scholarship, the Law School's commitment to serve the poor and disenfranchised members of the community through promoting social justice and the common good.

Working in teams of two, the students learn lawyering skills and values through the 3 hour weekly classroom component and direct representation. The mission of Villanova's clinical program is: "To help law students become reflective, ethical, creative, zealous, and justifiably confident advocates who value pro bono and public interest work. To express publicly, through service and scholarship, the Law School's commitment to serve the poor and disenfranchised members of the community through promoting social justice and the common good. Location of Delivery Service Various, in non-metropolitan areas in the Delaware Valley, especially Chester & Adams Counties

Brief Description of Project Activities

The Farmworker Clinic provides free legal services to immigrant workers in nonmetropolitan areas. Most of our clients are in Chester and Adams Counties, but our caseload typically covers 8-10 different counties at any one time. Our case types vary as well, but concentrate in wage and hour, immigration defense, workers' compensation (medicals-only), employment discrimination, and family law. Each fall the clinic students also accompany farmworker advocates to Adams County farm labor camps to assist in providing Know Your Rights presentations to migrant apple pickers. In spring 2010, with support from the Athletics Department, the clinic carried out a brief advice and referral trip to western North Carolina that served approximately 700 people. The Tax Clinic is built around a 4 credit course and is one of four(4) clinics at the law school. There is the regular activity of course planning and preparation client outreach occurs in a variety of ways: 1)agreement with the US Tax Court that results in letters to 700 pro se Tax Court petitioners each year requesting trials in Philadelphia; 2) regular contact with local legal and other non-profit service providers; 3) contact with Congressional offices. Activity is assessed through 1) student evaluations 2) client surveys, and 3) grant funds.

Description of funding /fundraising The Tax Clinic receives a grant from the IRS pursuant to secion 7526 of the Internal revenue Code. Usually, this grant runs between $95,000 and $100,000.

Comments Clinic classes do not exactly fit the "Project" model. Students getting course credit are not exactly "volunteers". Once you get past those hurdles, law school clinics provide significant benefits to the community and to the students. Clients are almost universally appreciative at a high level and students frequently site clinic courses as their favorite courses in law school. Clinics are a great way for Villanova Law School to train students while providing a tremendous service to the community under the Villanova banner.

Villanova Civil Justice Clinic (part of the Villanova School of Law) Dveera Segal - [email protected] - 96417

Description of Activity The mission of the Villanova School of Law Clinical Program is twofold: 1.To help law students become reflective, ethical, creative, zealous, and justifiably confident advocates who value pro bono and public interest work; 2.To express publicly, through service and scholarship, the Law School's commitment to serve the poor and disenfranchised members of the community through promoting social justice and the common good. Thus, the Civil Justice Clinic seeks to provide critical legal services where there is a significant unmet need and to provide law students with the best educational opportunity to develop their advocacy skills while learning about the realities of living in poverty and the importance of providing pro bono legal services.

Location of Delivery Service Villanova School of Law as well as local geographic area Brief Description of Project Activities

In the Civil Justice Clinic, law students represent low-income clients in a range of civil legal matters, including custody; child support; adoption; public and subsidized housing; mortgage foreclosure assistance; utilities; Unemployment Compensation; Social Security disability benefits; other public benefits; civil forfeiture; special education; employment; and expungement of child abuse records, which often serve as a barrier to employment.

Activities Related to Planning for and Assessing This Project

The Civil Justice Clinic is a six-credit course offered at the law school each semester. It is one of four clinics that comprise the Villanova Clinical Program. The faculty and staff engage in all the usual tasks related to course planning. We work with various non-profit agencies and courts in order to obtain case and client referrals. We ask each client, upon the conclusion of their case, to complete a survey about their experience and the service they received. We also ask our students to evaluate their experiences in the course. We obtain outside grant funding for this project. Thus, we submit annual grant requests and reports to the funder. We have regular meetings of the faculty and staff of the project and engage in regular assessment of the various aspects of the project.

Description of funding /fundraising The Civil Justice Clinic is primarily funded by the Law School. In addition, we receive $200,000 per year from the Pennsylvania IOLTA Board to support the operation of the Civil Justice Clinic and the Farmworker Legal Aid Clinic.

Comments Each of these is a course that students participate in for credit. At the same time, each of these courses does enable students, faculty and staff to provide life-changing benefits to clients who are in disadvantaged populations and would not otherwise be able to obtain these needed services. The students benefit from incredible experiential learning. They have the opportunity to combine theory and practice by applying what they’ve learned in their other courses to make an impact in the lives of real people.

Villanova School of Law Elizabeth Dunn - [email protected] - 97228

Description of Activity The Walter Lucas Public Interest Fellowship Program at Villanova University School of Law provides financial support to students who commit their summers to public service legal work. Many law students, dedicated to helping the less fortunate, are limited by financial constraints. Similarly, public interest legal organizations often cannot afford to hire much needed summer interns.Through fundraising, PIFP provides summer fellowships to Villanova Law students, who in turn aid the larger community by working with various public interest organizations and their clients. An entirely student-run organization, PIFP funds student fellowships through a variety of creative endeavors. To date, PIFP has raised over $500,000 and has awarded a total of 110 summer fellowships.

Location of Delivery Service Various locations in U.S. and globally Brief Description of Project Activities

The highlight of PIFP’s fundraising efforts is the annual Spring Auction, held at Villanova Law School and featuring items solicited by students and faculty throughout the school year. The first auction, held in April 1998, raised $19,000 and funded six summer fellowships. The date of the fourteenth annual auction is to be determined. In 2010, PIFP generated over $70,000, providing thirteen students with $4500 summer fellowships. Prior fellowship recipients have worked at public interest organizations throughout the world, including the Caritas Lebanon Migrant Center, the United Nations Development Program in Ghana, Greater Boston Legal Services, the Defender Association of Philadelphia, the California Appellate Project, the National Center for Victims of Crime, the Pennsylvania Health Law Project, the U.S. Attorney's Office, and the Humane Society of the United States. In addition, 2010 marked the fifth year in a row that PIFP provided $12,000 to fund its Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP). LRAP provides a $12,000 award, paid over three years, to a recent graduate committed to working for a public interest organization or governmental agency.
