    A VISIT TO KAINJI HYDROELECTRIC POWERSTATION

    Electric system in Nigeria has four zones, namely;

    1. Generation

    2. Transmission

    3. Distribution and

    4. Marketing

    1. GENERATION: It is further divided into two,

    (i) Hydro and (ii) Thermal

    i. HYDRO: These stations rotate their turbine with fresh water as prime mover e.g.jebba, kanji, and shirroro power station.

    ii. Thermal: these power station uses gas and steam as prime mover e.g.jebba (Lagos), delta (delta ugheli), and sapele (delta), and alpham.

    2. Transmission: these are the body that carries electric power in Nigeria(330kv line is the system of operation) it is manage by transmission people. They have rated feeders/circuit breakers.3. Distribution: their own job is to connect to the line and also maintainthe local substation.4. Marketing : these are people that reads the meter and convert to nairaHISTORY OF KAINJI HYDRO POWER STATIONKainji was constructed in Nigeria in 1950(ECN that wrote the management paper).They carried visible study from 1951-1961. They submitted their report 102km toJebba town. In 1962 Niger dam authority was established and in 1968.Niger dam authority appointed IMPREGILO man contractor, in 1964 his excellence Tafa Balewa laid the foundation (9 other countries participated). General Yakubu Gowon commission the dam.89m pounds was loaned on commissioning the station. In 1976 they in

    stalled three stations 100mw. In 1978 phase two produce two more mega watt

    Kainji is not just all engineering, but are divided into various sections. They are;

    (i).HYDROLOGY: They are water managers.

    (ii).DAMP INSTUMENTATION: They study geo-techniques.

    (iii).MECHANICAL ENGINEERING: They are for generation and maintainace.(iv).ADMINISTRATION

    (v).FINANACE/ACCOUNTING(vi).MEDICAL SERVICES(vii).ENVIRONMENTAL and(viii).PUPLIC RELATED OFFICE

    The base voltage in kainji is 16000v step down and33000v as step up at start gauge. Kainji dam uses 15b cubic litres of water in the reservoir. They have 110dcfrom the battery band. They have inverter and converter; it converts dc to ac an

    d ac to dc respectively. All whats the machine produces goes into the bushtop. The governor system is used to regulate the machine (turbine).it serves as the salvo. There are two types of turbine; the analogue and digital type. They digitaltype is more preferable. Note: Water leakage causes heat and cannot generate more. The carbon (iv) oxide help against fire occurance.water is used to cool the oil through heat exchanger also cooling of the rusting bearing, service air tank.The oil of a transformer cools the transformer.
