Stained Glass Project By John Hunt I started working as a volunteer within the Brockwell Centre about
a year ago in youth work. During a conversation with Simeon, I
was explaining my background working with glass, and the
various stained glass projects I had done in the past. Simeon
asked if I would mind having a look at a stained glass project they
were hoping to obtain for the centre to represent the Community, its past, present and future. I
was asked if I could come up with a design that would represent the community as a whole. I
talked to a few groups of all ages who attend the centre to get
some ideas of what they thought should go on it. After many hours
of sifting through photographs and people’s ideas I came up with
some designs to present to the board, after feedback from them a
design was finalized.
I will give you a brief explanation as to what the individual panels of
glass represent. The outside panels represent things that go on in
and around the Brockwell Centre such as sports, music, and arts
and crafts. The ribbons represent ongoing support within the
community. The right hand panel is the Busty Bridge and the forty trees. It also has the start of
the rainbow that leads into the end panel, which represents the past into the present and
future.
The left hand panel is the Pelton Fell colliery, which leads into the
centre panel. The lilies represent all the people who have passed
away within Pelton Fell. The leaves that lead up from this represent
each of the 24 men and boys who lost their lives due to the explosion
in Pelton Fell pit in October of 1866. The year 2009 is the year of the
opening of The Brockwell Centre. The sunburst is there to pull in the
past, present and future of Pelton Fell.
Doing this stained glass has sometimes been frustrating but has
always been a pleasure. I am proud to have been given the opportunity to give the
community something to call their own and will still be here for generations to come. I would
like to thank everyone who has had an input into this project from the community, groups
within the Brockwell Centre and to the people who installed the glass and the suppliers of the
materials. Most of all I would like to thank everyone for their positive feedback and support.

We look forward to meeting everyone in the village and would like to thank all of the local
people, the Councillors and Pelton Fell Community Partnership for their support for the
Pharmacy and continuous hard work towards the regeneration of Pelton Fell.
Shop Improvement
Not only are we getting a new pharmacy in Pelton Fell, we are also going to see
environmental improvements to the area in front of the Pelton Fell Post Office and Shop. This
scheme will improve the visual appearance to the heart of the community.
The scheme looks to provide a safer pedestrian environment through the rationalisation of
parking by providing a dedicated layby and protecting area for use by pedestrians only.
The use of quality materials and street trees will enhance this key facility within the village
centre. The scheme has been designed and partly funded by Durham County Council's
Urban and Rural Renaissance initiative with matched funding from Cllrs Henig and
Marshall, Local Transport Plan, Area Action Partnership and local businessman Mr Singh.
Work starts on site week commencing Monday
23rd May for the duration of approximately
6 weeks.
