F rom 1905 to 1907, the brothers developed the ir flying machine into the first practica l fixed-wing a ircraft.Although not the first to build and fly experimenta l a ircraft, the W right brothers were the first to invent a ircraft controls that madefixed-wing powered flight possible . The brothers' fundamenta l breakthrough was the ir invention of three-axis control, which enabledthe pilot to steer the a ircraft e ffective ly and to mainta in its equilibrium. This method became and remains standard on fixed-wingaircraft of a ll kinds. F rom the beginning of the ir aeronautica l work, the W right brothers focused on developing a re liable method ofpilot control as the key to solving "the flying problem". This approach differed significantly from other experimenters of the time whoput more emphasis on developing powerful engines. U sing a small homebuilt wind tunnel, the W rights a lso collected more accuratedata than any before , enabling them to design and build wings and propellers that were more efficient than any before . Their firstU .S . patent, 821 ,393, did not cla im invention of a flying machine, but ra ther, the invention of a system of aerodynamic control thatmanipulated a flying machine 's surfaces. They ga ined the mechanica l skills essentia l for the ir success by working for years in the irshop with printing presses, bicycles, motors, and other machinery. Their work with bicycles in particular influenced the ir be lie f that anunstable vehicle like a flying machine could be controlled and balanced with practice . F rom 1900 until the ir first powered flights inla te 1903, they conducted extensive glider tests that a lso developed the ir skills as pilots. Their bicycle shop employee C harlie Taylorbecame an important part of the team, building the ir first a irplane engine in close collaboration with the brothers. G ood condition

49: Men of the Battle of Britain hard backed book signed by G BP 4 ,000 - 6 ,000

M en of the Battle of Brita in hard backed book signed by 250 BO B pilots and aces. 80 are signed on the book pages and 170 onlabels a ffixed throughout the book. Incredible collection of the brave pilots who save Brita in from Invasion in 1941.Also inscribed bythe author Ken W ynn. This is why the book is a unique one-off. The book was specifica lly published in 1990 to coincide with thehistoric 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Brita in. 'O peration H omecoming' brought many of 'The Few' living abroad back to Brita in forthe Anniversary and for various receptions - M aidstone - Bentley P riory - Biggin H ill - Buckingham P alace. It was a one-off LAS TT IM E 'The Few' would be gathered in such numbers. C ollected by P laywright, S creenwriter & F ilm P roducer Anthony Attard, whohas deta iled how this amazing item came to pass. In 1990, former W W II Typhoon pilot and avia tion author John G olley, introducedme to the R edgrave Theatre , Farnham, S urrey, who wanted a new play written to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of The Battleof Brita in. I invited John to collaborate with me. The play was ca lled 'F reedom To Forget,' and a G ala P erformance in a id of the R AFBenevolent Fund was held, by tota lly uncanny coincidence on the 31st O ctober 1990. The 31st O ctober 1940 is now officia llyremembered as the date the Battle of Brita in ended. A number of 'The Few' who lived reasonably local to Farnham were able toattend the G ala N ight performance. O ver the course of 1990, be ing commissioned to write the play enabled me to meet so many ofthe 'Few' who had a lways been my heroes. Also, W ing C ommander N .P .W . 'P at' H ancock O BE D FC , then S ecretary of the Battle ofBrita in F ighter Association, forwarded le tters I wrote to members of the Association and is how I obta ined so many on labels. Forevery signature I rece ived I made a donation to the B.O .B. F ighter Association to he lp with the financia l cost of 'O perationH omecoming,' which brought so many of 'The Few' living overseas to the U .K., for the 50th Anniversary ce lebrations. The C zech andP ole signatories to this book were obta ined at a reception he ld a t M aidstone on S aturday 22nd S eptember 1990. All of the otheractual signatories were obta ined when I was a guest a t the Biggin H ill Air S how that same year, or by personal visit to the ir homeswhere I was privileged to hear the ir enthra lling memories of the Battle of Brita in. 50: Concorde Machmeter. This Concorde machmeter was G BP 10,000 - 15 ,000

C oncorde M achmeter. This C oncorde machmeter was presented to C apta in M ike Bannister, C hief C oncorde P ilot a t British Airways, after the fina l C oncorde flight, in recognition of his 22 years flying C oncorde during which he accumulated more C oncorde flyinghours, and more supersonic flying hours, than anyone e lse in the W orld. C oncorde cruises at M ach 2 , twice the speed of sound,1350mph (2160kph). The M achmeter indicates the current speed to the F light C rew and is iconic in that it encompasses the wholeessence of the C oncorde operation. These are very rare as only a few were made. O nly a few of these ever appear on the marketstarting in 2003 when one sold for £28000 and in 2007 on fe tched £27000. This C oncorde machmeter will come with copies of adeta iled description compiled by M ike Bannister himself, plus a copy of the British Airways F light T ra ining le tter as provenance. 51: The Concorde Air Intake Control Panel. In supersonic G BP 8 ,000 - 10 ,000

The C oncorde Air Intake C ontrol P anel. In supersonic flight a t around 1 ,350 mph (22! miles per minute) C oncorde’s R olls-R oyceO lympus 593 engines could only accept incoming a ir a t around 500 mph. C onsequently the a ir had to be slowed down in the e levenfoot long ‘Air Intake’ in front of each engine face . This was done by a carefully controlled pa ir of ‘Intake R amps’ which werepositioned precise ly to generate a series of shock waves in the intake. The ‘Air Intake C ontrol P anel’ is the unique item that a llowedthe F light C rew to manage this complex process. Located on the F light E ngineer’s P anel, it is one of the key items that enabledC oncorde to successfully fly a t M ach 2 for over three hours – a feat that no other a ircraft before or since has achieved. ThisC oncorde Air Intake C ontrol P anel will come with deta iled descriptions and an explanation of how it works from M ike Bannisterhimself. It is a lso the point of maximum heating on the a ircraft. At M ach 2 the temperature on the P robe can reach 127° C elsius. Theprobe is 1 ft 9 in (0 .53m) long and measures both static and dynamic a ir pressure . The on board systems then convert thosemeasurements into a ircraft speed. This particular N ose P itot P robe was presented to C apta in M ike Bannister, C hief C oncorde P ilotat British Airways, a fter the fina l C oncorde flight in recognition of his 22 years flying C oncorde during which he accumulated moreC oncorde flying hours, and more supersonic flying hours, than anyone e lse in the W orld. 55: The Concorde Centre of Gravity Controller. Concorde has G BP 6 ,500 - 8 ,500

The C oncorde C entre of G ravity C ontroller. C oncorde has a unique system for ‘C entre of G ravity C ontrol’. The position throughwhich the lift developed by an a ircraft’s wing is considered to act is ca lled the ‘C entre of Lift’ (C L). The position through which theweight/mass of an a ircraft is considered to act is ca lled the ‘C entre of G ravity’ (C G ). The distance between these two pointsgenerates a ‘lever arm’ which has to be ba lanced by the position of the a ircraft’s flying controls. At a given unchanging weight: - In aconventional a ircraft the C L will move aft as flight speed increases, the C G remains stationary and the lever arm will increase. Thischange in trim is countered by deflecting flying controls from the optimum position thereby generating additional a ircraft drag.Increased drag results in increased fue l consumption. O n C oncorde the C L again moves aft as speed increases but the ‘C entre ofG ravity C ontrol’ system is utilised to move fue l around the a ircraft which thereby moves the C entre of G ravity. The objective is tobalance the C L movement by C G movement thereby minimising the deflection of flying controls and the associated increase in fue lconsumption. The control of this system is a function of the F light E ngineer and the controller is located in the centre of the F lightE ngineer’s P anel.
