52008 U.S. Youth Sailing Championship
June 26, 2008
It is my great pleasure to welcome you to The San Francisco Yacht Club. Our club is the oldest yacht club on the West Coast and has a long historyof strong support for youth sailing. I speak for the Flag Officers, Board ofDirectors and members of the club when I say that we are honored tohost the 2008 U. S. Youth Sailing Championship.
For those of you who have not previously sailed on San Francisco Bay, Itrust that you will find that its reputation as one the most interesting andexciting sailing venues in the world is accurate. I also sincerely hope thatyou will enjoy our club’s facilities and location in one of the bay’s finest, fogfree areas, Belvedere Cove.
Vice Commodore Kyle Elliott, Rear Commodore Ray Lynch, as well as ourmany volunteers and staff, have all worked very hard and enthusiastically inpreparing for this event and we are ‘committed’ to making this the mostsuccessful and exciting U. S. Youth Sailing Championship ever.
Congratulations and good luck.

72008 U.S. Youth Sailing Championship
To the 2008 U.S. Sailing Championship Competitors:
Welcome to the San Francisco Yacht Club! We are the oldest Yacht Club on the West Coast, established in 1869,and we are honored to host the finest youth sailors in America. It is through hard work and determination thatyou have arrived at this level of sailing, and we are sure it has also been accomplished with the help and supportof your parents, your coaches, and your respective Clubs. You should be as proud to participate as we are proudto have you as guests of our Club.
Like all of the U.S. Youth Championships before us, a great deal of time has been spent on the planning andlogistics process. That process commenced in 2006, when the San Francisco Yacht Club stepped forward to hostthe 2008 event. Under the leadership of then Commodore Wendy Miller, followed by Commodores JohnScarborough, William Smith, and our current Commodore John Swain, the enthusiasm has been kept alive andfueled to ensure the best youth event in the country, held at what we believe to be the best sailing venue in thecountry, and that this will be a lasting experience for all.
Regardless of the host Club, this event would not be what it is without the leadership of US SAILING. With theguidance of US SAILING’s Liz Walker and Shannon Bush, who provide the organization skills, creativity, anddetermination, we can ensure that each year’s event is of the highest caliber possible.
The Championships would also not be possible without the financial and physical support of our local sponsors. This year’s event has the generous support of Nautica, LaserPerformance, The Belvedere Cove Foundation, Yahoo!, Bankof Marin, ETON, Cliff Bar, Morgan Stanley, Svendsen’s Boat Works, Hood Sails and Sequoia Mortgage Capital. Withouttheir dedication to sailing and providing opportunities for young sailors to advance and excel in their chosen sport,we would not have the event we are here to enjoy.
The San Francisco Yacht Club is dedicated in its charter to introduce and advance sailing to the entire family ofour members. We fully support all of our young sailors, and commit to them that we will provide the platform thatcan take them to as high a level of sailing as possible. We ask only one thing in return for our efforts, and wemake that same request of each and every Youth Champs competitor: Respect
*We ask that you Respect your fellow sailors, in the highest Corinthian spirit*We ask that you Respect all Judges, Race Officials, and coaches.*We ask that you Respect The San Francisco Yacht Club, your host family, and all the volunteers who have worked so hard for months to make this possible.*Lastly, Respect yourselves for what you have accomplished and be proud to be a participant.
On behalf of the entire membership of The San Francisco Yacht Club, the Board of Directors, and the FlagOfficers, we wish each and every one of you the best of luck, and smooth sailing!

The San Francisco Yacht Club, oneof the oldest yachtingorganizations in the Western
Hemisphere, is the oldest such club onthe Pacific Coast of North America. TheSan Francisco Yacht Club was foundedin 1869 and incorporated as a nonprofitorganization in 1873.
The original anchorage andClubhouse were located in SanFrancisco near Mission Rock.Inadequate depth of water andincreasing industrial growth in the arearesulted in a move to Sausalito.
Waterfront property waspurchased and a new Clubhouse erected. The Clubhouse was destroyed by firein 1897 with the loss of most of thetrophies and records. AnotherClubhouse was built on the same sitein 1898. This building is still standingand now houses the Ondinerestaurant. Increasing auto ferry trafficand congestion made another moveimperative. The decision to move wasmade in 1926.
One g roup, headed byCommodore Clifford Smith, felt thatBelvedere Cove would be an ideallocation. Both waterfront propertyand tidelands were available forpurchase. Another group felt that theClub should move back to SanFrancisco and lease land from the City
on the Marina.
A bitterfight developedamong the Board ofDirectors andamong themembers as towhich site was bestfor the future ofthe Club. Thisquotation from theminutes speaks foritself: “ViceCommodore Smithspoke at length on theadvantages of theMarina site. Afterc o n s i d e r a b l e
discussion, his resignation was offered andunanimously accepted by the Board.”
The Belvedere Cove site wasfinally selected. Those who opposedthe move resigned and formed theSt. Francis Yacht Club. Property inBelvedere Cove was purchased andthe Club moved to Belvedere in 1927,renting the old Pacific Motor BoatClub property until the cove couldbe dredged and a Clubhouse built.
A small Clubhouse wascompleted in 1934 in time for theOpening Day celebration. It is stillpart of the present building, whichhas been remodeled and enlargedmany t imes. The most recentrefurbishing of the Clubhouse was
completed in 2007 at $1million.
The present San Francisco Yacht ClubHarbor was completed in 1957. Muchof the original planning dates back to1933. Lack of money and thedepression caused this effort to fail.
During 1956, a basic plan acceptable tothe City of Belvedere and to the Clubwas developed. The Harbor wascompleted and opened in late 1957.Originally, 134 berths were constructed.Additional berths were added later, thelast 26 in 1960, bringing the total to 175.
In 2004-2005 a new Sailing Center wasbuilt in the lower parking lot areaopposite the Youth Sailing Dock andstorage unit. This new building includedfacilities and offices for the JuniorProgram, a meeting room on thesecond floor; bath and shower facilitiesfor men and women and additionalclub storage.
In 2006 and 2007 the Clubhouse wasgiven an extensive renovation with newwall treatments, carpets and hardwoodflooring and lighting. A fireplace wasadded to the Bar Lounge area. A newsound system was built in and theHVAC was upgraded.
The San Francisco Yacht Club, with itstranquil setting in Belvedere Cove andits superb Harbor, is widely recognizedas the premier yachting facility on theWest Coast and a true “Home awayfrom Home”!
HISTORY OFTHE SAN FRANCISCO YACHT CLUB
2008 U.S. Youth Sailing Championship
12
The U.S. Youth Sailing Championship was started in1973 at the Sheridan Shore Yacht Club in WilmetteIL. The top 150 sailors from around the country, aged
19 or under (ISAF World Youth Championship age limit),were sent invitations on US Olympic Yachting Committeeletterhead to attend the event in Lasers and 470s in mid-June. From the outset, a racing clinic and video recaps of theraces led by world class sailors have been an integral part ofthe week. Buddy Melges, Dave Ullman, Bruce Goldsmith, and Bruce Kirby were instructors in that first year. Winnerswere funded to World and National Championships. Theevent has several goals: (a) to provide a challenge to youngsailors to grow beyond the skill levels used to win at the localand regional level (b) to serve as a bridge between JuniorSailing (age 17) and College Sailing, at a time between the endof school and the start of summer sailing instructor jobswhen participants had their driving licenses (c) to better pro-duce US sailors capable of winning the World Youth Cham-pionships in big-fleet races; (d) to develop and identify tal-ent for the US Olympic Sailing Team, and (e) to motivate alifetime commitment to sailing. One significant outcomeof the event has been to create a new “class” of friends eachyear, coming from every sailing center in America. As thesegraduates became more involved and contributed to the ad-ministration of the sport of sailboat racing, the North Ameri-can Yacht Racing Union (NAYRU) evolved into today’s USSAILING with truly national representation. Now after overall these years, each meeting has the feel of a college reunion. Invitations to the event are made by US SAILING’s YouthChampionship Committee, based on review of applicant’sentry forms.Other than the Laser, boats have changed overthe years . Beginning in 2006, this prestigiouschampionship included Club 420’s, Lasers, Laser Radials and29er.There have been juniors who have won a U.S. JuniorChampionships and claimed a U.S. Youth title. LouisVerloop of Coconut Grove Sailing Club won the Smythetrophy three times and also claimed the Junior OlympicSinglehanded title in 1983. California’s Kevin Hall won the
Smythe trophy twice and added the Junior Olympic Singlehanded titleto his resume in 1986. Peter Dreyfuss of Miami, FL, won theSinglehanded title in 1988, a year after he won the Smythe trophy. DaltonBergan of Seattle, WA, did the same, winning the Singlehanded title in1996 and the Smythe trophy in 1995. David Ames of Miami, FL pulledoff a similar feat, winning the doublehanded title in 1995, three yearsafter winning the Bemis trophy. He had the same crew, P.J. Buhler, onboth occasions.Youth Championship graduates have become the stal-warts of successful college sailing programs and filled out the ranks ofAll-Americans. As an example, seven early participants in the US YouthChamps eventually were honored with the Everett B. Morris Trophy forCollege Sailor of the Year. These included Augie Diaz (’74), Peter Isler(’76), Carl Buchan (‘77), Steve Benjamin (’78), Alex Smilgelski (’79), StuJohnstone (’80) and Morgan Reeser (’84). Additionally: Terry Neff, NealFowler, Dave Perry, Hugo Schmidt, James McCreary, Buzz Reynolds,Ed Adams, Gerard Coleman, Kelly Gough, Mark Rastello, and GaryKnapp were early 1970s Youth Championship participants who alsobecame Collegiate All-Americans.The only three-time winners are ScottHaladay of Gulf Breeze, FL (boardsailing); Andrew Campbell of SanDiego, CA (Singlehanded); and Bill Hardesty of San Diego, CA(Doublehanded & Singlehanded); Andrew Campbell led the 2006Georgetown Hoyas to the Leonard Fowle Trophy, emblematic of thetop collegiate team, while winning the Morris Trophy for Sailor of theYear honors. Hardesty also won the Bemis trophy in 1990 and wasCollege Sailor of the Year in 1998. Eight winners went on to with theYouth Worlds. Mike Goyan (Lakewood, CA) was the winning crewthree times in four years during the 1980s, each time with a differenthelm. The Robert L. Johnstone III Trophy for the Singlehandedwinner recognizes the Founder and Chairman (1973-1980) of the eventand his contribution to one-design and community sailing programs. The Doublehanded trophy memorializes Manton D. Scott, a Sears Cupwinner (’69), Collegiate All-American (’72) and inspirational leader insmall boat sailing, who was electrocuted by an overhead powerline whenstepping the mast of his 470. This was a month prior to the 1973event, where Scott had been scheduled as one of the Clinic instructors. Sportsmanship awards were given out beginning in 1989 in the nameof 1973 participant and later event Chairman, David M. Perry, a wellknown author of books on the racing rules, recognizing his leadershipqualities in junior and intercollegiate sailing.

20 2008 U.S. Youth Sailing Championship
San Francisco Bay is over 60 miles long running North and South, and comprises over 500 squaremiles of tidal waters. Drainage from about 40% of the state of California passes out through the Bay.All of that water flows in and out at the Golden Gate, the only outlet of the Bay. The water at the
Gate is over 400 feet deep, but tidal currents there can be over 5 knots. The Bay is also a major international shipping port. The main shipping channel runs through the
central Bay and turns South towards Alameda, well away from the racing area. However, a secondaryshipping channel does run North from the central Bay, and will need to be crossed to reach the racing area. The racing area itself is in the eastern part of the Bay, East of the North shipping channel and adjacent toBerkeley. The water in the area is generally 6 to 10 feet deep. The wind tends to be relatively even acrossthe area, and the tidal currents are relatively small. The distance from the SFYC to the racing area is about 4miles, and ALL competitor’s boats must be accompanied by a coach or support boat while crossing thechannel East of Angel Island in either direction. All racing will be well clear of the channel.
The conditions vary dramatically depending on wind and tide. Typically a thermally-driven westerlybreeze develops in the late morning, and builds as the day goes on, often reaching 15-20 knots on a typicalSummer afternoon. A flood tide results in relatively flat water. But when the direction of the tide and windare opposed, heavy chop can develop, especially in afternoon conditions. The water temperature is in the50’s, so it is important to dress warmly, although it is generally very pleasant at the SFYC.
