A type of verb that expresses physical or mental activity
Action verb
A verb that expresses a state of being that connects subject to
words that describe the subject.
Linking verb
A verb that helps the main verb express action or state of
being
Helping verb
A verb that expresses action directed towards a person,
place, thing or idea
Transitive verb
An action verb that does not pass action on to a person, place, thing
or idea
Intransitive verb
A word that modifies a verb, adjective, or adverb
adverb
A word that shows relationship of a noun or pronoun to
another word
preposition
Includes a preposition, noun or pronoun called the object of
preposition and modifiers of that object
Prepositional phrase
For the next few slides identify the part of speech for the
italicized word.

Substitute teachers work hard.
Intransitive action verb

Linking verb
