STARTING FIVE• The Minnesota men’s basketball team opens the month of February with
a border battle against rival Wisconsin, the teams’ fi rst of two meetings in
a 26-day span. Last season, the teams split the season series, with each
school winning on the road.
• Sophomore center Daniel Oturu was named to the John R. Wooden Award
Late Season Top 20 List, which ranks him among the top candidates in
the nation for the men’s basketball player of the year. The award will be
announced in April.
• On Jan. 23, Marcus Carr’s last-second heroics helped lift the Gophers to
a season sweep of the Ohio State Buckeyes. Minnesota won in Columbus
for the fi rst time since 2005, which also marked the last time that the
Maroon and Gold swept the Scarlet and Grey during the regular season.
It also was the fi rst regular-season sweep by the Gophers since doing so
against Penn State in 2014.
• Minnesota has been tested early and often, playing one of the nation’s toughest schedules. Through the games of
Feb. 3, the Gophers’ schedule ranks as the second toughest in NCAA Division I according to KenPom.com.
• The Gophers rank highly among the nation’s college basketball teams in several categories. As of Feb. 4,
Minnesota is 27th in blocked shots per game (B1G: 3rd). Daniel Oturu is seventh in rebounds per game (B1G: 1st),
19th in the country in blocks (B1G: 2nd), and 30th in fi eld goal percentage (B1G: 1st). Oturu’s 11 double-doubles
rank 18th in the country and third in the Big Ten. Marcus Carr is 14th in the country in assists per game (B1G: 2nd)
and leads the Big Ten in minutes per game (NCAA: 21st). Oturu is also the Big Ten’s second leading scorer, trailing
Iowa’s Luka Garza (23.0 ppg). Gabe Kalscheur leads the Big Ten in total 3-pointers made and treys per game.

SCOUTING THE BADGERS• Wisconsin snapped a two-game losing skid on Saturday when
it upset Michigan State in Madison, 64-63. The Badgers sit one
game ahead of the Gophers in the conference standings at 6-5
in Big Ten play, and are 13-9 overall including a 10-1 mark at
home this season. UW has a pair of road wins in Big Ten play as
well, winning at Penn State and Ohio State.
• Nate Reuvers leads the Badger offense, scoring 13.8 points per
game, the lone active Badger to average double-digit scoring.
• Wisconsin leads the Big Ten and is ninth in the country in
protecting the ball, averaging 10.5 turnovers per game.
COURTESY OF CARR• Marcus Carr completed a historic feat on Jan. 12 against
Michigan, becoming the fi rst Gopher player with 20+ points and
12+ assists while fi nishing with zero turnovers.
• His 21-point, 12-point outing was the sophomore’s fi rst career
double-double and tied his career high in assists.
• Carr is the team’s second leading scorer while leading the
team and ranking second in the conference and 14th nationally
in assists per game.
• Carr is also the team’s minutes leader, ranking 21st in the
country and tops in the Big Ten averaging 36.8 minutes on the
court per game.
DAN IS THE MAN• Sophomore center Daniel Oturu, who earned his second Big
Ten Player of the Week award on Jan. 13 and was named to the
Wooden Award Late Season Top 20 List, continues to put up eye-
popping numbers as the season rolls on.
• He has already set new or matched career highs in 12 different
categories.
• The Woodbury native now has 11 double-doubles on the season
after contributing 26 points and 14 rebounds in the win over
Penn State. Against Michigan, Oturu scored a new career high of
30 points while adding seven rebounds and a steal.
• His 11 double-doubles tie for 18th in the country and third in
the Big Ten.
• Oturu, who has started every game, has scored in double
fi gures in all but one and has 11 games of 20 or more points. He
is also third in the Big Ten in minutes per game, averaging just
over 34 minutes per contest.
MONEY FROM FREE THROW LINE• The Gophers matched their school record on Sunday against
Northwestern, going perfect from the free throw line in their 19
attempts.
• It marks the fi rst perfect effort from the stripe (minimum 12
attempts) by the Maroon and Gold since Feb. 22, 1986 when they
were 12-of-12 from the line.
OTURU’S TOPS IN THE BIG TEN AFTER HISTORIC GAME• Oturu was dominant in posting the fi rst 20-20 game by a
Gopher in more than 53 years, registering 21 points and a
career-high 20 rebounds in the win over FIU on Dec. 28. The
last Gopher to do so was Tom Kondla at Kansas State on Dec. 1,
1966, while Oturu also became the fi rst Big Ten player in more
than 11 years to reach the mark.
• He added one assist, one block and one steal in his 32-minute
outing, which saw him go 8-of-12 from the fi eld and 5-of-5 from
the free throw line.
• The Woodbury, Minn., native’s rebounding night matched the
10th highest total in program history, and the most since Jordan
Murphy had 21 last season against Penn State. In the process,
Oturu earned his seventh double-double of the season, accom-
plishing that feat in the fi rst half for the third time this year.
KALSCHEUR EARNS BIG TEN WEEKLY HONOR• Sophomore guard Gabe Kalscheur was selected the Big Ten
Conference Co-Player of the Week on Dec. 23.
• It is the fi rst such award for the Edina, Minn., native, who
earned top weekly freshman honors in November 2018 after his
previous top career performance.
• Las Saturday in Tulsa, Okla., Kalscheur poured in 34 points,
besting his previous career high by nine points in the 20-point
win over Oklahoma State. Kalscheur’s efforts came on 11-of-14
fi eld goal shooting (78.6 percent) including a scorching 7-of-9
performance from beyond the arc (77.8 percent).
• The seven treys matched his career high and tied for the third
most by any Gopher in a single-game. Kalscheur also added
three rebounds, one assist and a steal in 33 minutes of action at
the BOK Center.
BIG TIME BIG TEN WIN• The Gophers posted the biggest win of the Richard Pitino era,
rankings-wise, knocking off then No. 3/2 Ohio State on Dec. 15
at Williams Arena, 84-71.
• It was the second win over a top-fi ve team Pitino and fi rst
since defeating Coaches Poll No. 5 Maryland at home on Feb.
18, 2016.
FOUR FROSH ON THE FLOOR• Minnesota’s four true freshmen -- Tre’ Williams, Bryan Green-
lee, Sam Freeman and Isaiah Ihnen -- were all on the court at
the same time for the fi rst time in their careers at the conclusion
of the victory over Clemson.
• The combo teamed with senior Brady Rudrud to close out the
victory.
OMERSA GROUNDS THE HAWKS• Sophomore Jarvis Omersa had his best game of his career to
date on Nov. 24 against the Fighting Hawks of North Dakota.
• The Orono, Minn., native recorded career-highs with 11 points,
a game-high nine rebounds and three assists in 22 minutes.
• Omersa made 5-of-9 fi eld goals and also came up with a pair
of steals in the Gophers’ victory.
RAINING IN THE BARN • The season opener versus Cleveland State saw the Gophers
connect on 13 3-pointers, tying for the fourth-highest single
game total in program history.
• Payton Willis led the Gophers and tied a career-high by
making 5-of-8 from beyond the arc, while Marcus Carr and Gabe
Kalscheur each had three trifectas.
• When the team returned to Williams Arena next, 16 days later,
the Gophers connected on 14 3-pointers which tied for the
second most in school history.
• It matched the totals at Michigan (Feb. 17, 2001) and, most
recently, at home against Fairleigh Dickinson (December 13,
2002).
• Last season, the Gophers (who ranked among the nation’s
least productive teams behind the arc) sank double-digit treys
just four times including a season-high of 12 in a win over
Indiana on Feb. 16.
FIFTH-ANNUAL COACHES VS. CANCER TIPOFF DINNER • Before the season tipped off, the Gophers and head coach
Richard Pitino continued their annual tradition of raising money
for the fi ght against cancer.
• On Nov. 3 at Interlachen Country Club in Edina, more than
$117,000 was grossed in the fi fth annual Coaches vs. Cancer
Tipoff Dinner.
• All proceeds from the event benefi t the Richard M. Schulze
Family American Cancer Society Hope Lodge in Minneapolis,
which provides accomodations and support to families and
patients during their time fi ghting the disease.
DRESS REHEARSALS• The Gophers played a pair of preseason games as they readied
for the 2019-20 season.
• On October 19, Minnesota edged Iowa State in a closed scrim-
mage in Ames, 77-68 in overtime.
• Four Gophers reached double fi gures in the contest, led by
17 points from sophomores Marcus Carr and Gabe Kalscheur.
Classmate Daniel Oturu posted a double-double with 13 points
and a game-high 13 rebounds, adding two blocks. Joining the
group was junior Payton Willis, who added 12, including a pair of
3-pointers in overtime.
• Nine days later, the Gophers handled Southwest Minnesota
State, 73-48, in an exhibition game at Williams Arena.
• Willis fi nished the game with a team-high 14 points to go
with six assists and four rebounds, while Oturu recorded a
double-double with 12 points, a game-high 16 rebounds and
three steals. Carr wound up with 12 points and six assists, and
Kalscheur had 11 points for the Gophers.
NEW TEAM, WHO DIS?• Minnesota welcomes seven newcomers to the court this sea-
son, the most since the 2004-05 campaign. The Gophers’ seven
new players is the third highest total in the Big Ten Conference
behind Nebraska (14) and Northwestern (9).
• Among the group is three transfers: guards Payton Willis
(Vanderbilt) and Marcus Carr (Pittsburgh) who sat out last year
due to NCAA transfer rules, along with graduate transfer Alihan
Demir (Drexel).
• Four freshmen in guards Bryan Greenlee and Tre’ Williams,
along with big men Sam Freeman and Isaiah Ihnen round out the
corps of fresh faces.
CURRY TO MISS 2019-20 SEASON WITH KNEE INJURY• Redshirt junior forward Eric Curry (Memphis, Tenn./Southwest
Christian Academy) suffered a season-ending knee injury in
practice in early October.
• “We are obviously disappointed in Eric’s recent setback,” Pitino
said at the time. “He has worked so hard and stayed positive
throughout this whole process. He is still a valuable member
and leader on this team. I can’t wait to get him back, better
than ever next year.”
• Curry will underwent successful surgery in late October to
repair the torn ACL and will miss the 2019-20 season.
SUPPORT STAFF CHANGES• Head coach Richard Pitino announced in early November the
addition of Patrick Reilingh to the newly created position of
recruiting coordinator, along with the promotion of Josh Adel to
video coordinator.
• Reilingh, a 2014 graduate of Louisville, joins the Gophers after
spending time at his alma mater and most recently one season
as the video coordinator at La Salle.
• Adel has served in a variety of roles since joining Pitino’s
original staff at Minnesota in 2013.
• Additionally, former Gopher student-athlete Jarvis Johnson
joined the team as a graduate manager prior to the season, after
earning his undergraduate degree from the ‘U’ this past spring.
UP NEXT• The Gophers travel to No. 22/20 Penn State for a Saturday
matinee in Happy Valley, looking to sweep the season series from
the Nittany Lions.
• Tip off is scheduled for 3 p.m. with BTN and KFAN 100.3
FM carrying the action live from the Bryce Jordan Center in
University Park.

University of Minnesota head men’s basketball coach Richard Pitino announced in November the addition of future Gophers Jamal Mash-
burn, Jr. (Miami, Fla./Brewster Academy) and Martice Mitchell (Chicago, Ill./Bloom). Each signed their National Letter of Intent to join the
men’s basketball program for the 2020-21 season. The Gophers have now signed at least one four-star prospect in each of the last six years.
JAMAL MASHBURN, JR.6-2 • MIAMI, FLA. • BREWSTER ACADEMY
Mashburn is a consensus four-star and top-100 prospect in the nation as well as one of the top 2020 recruits from the Sunshine State. He is in his second season at Brewster, where he helped lead the New Hampshire prep school to a National Prep Championship. Last season, Mashburn scored nine points per game while shooting
38 percent from behind the 3-point arc and 77 percent from the free throw line. In the Bobcats’ National Prep Championship game, Mashburn contributed 22 points to the
winning effort.
PITINO ON MASHBURN:“Jamal is one of the top scorers in his class. He has unlimited range and competes
every second he gets on the court. Jamal is one of the hardest workers in the country. He will be a tremendous addition to our basketball program on and off the court.”
MARTICE MITCHELL6-10 • CHICAGO, ILL. • BLOOM H.S.
Mitchell also ranks among the top five prospects in his home state of Illinois as well as a four-star prospect. Last season at Bloom, he averaged 11 points, nine rebounds and three blocks per game. His team was ranked throughout the season among Illi-
nois state high school programs, falling in the sectional semifinals.
PITINO ON MITCHELL:“Martice has phenomenal potential. He can score inside and out. He’s versatile and has tremendous length. Every time I saw him he got better and better. He will be a
terrific student athlete and will fit in right away into our locker room.”

• Set single-season school records for victories, steals, rebounds and blocks
• Guided Gophers to 2014 NIT title and two NCAA berths (2017, 2019)
Richard Pitino is in his seventh season as the 17th head coach of the University of Minnesota’s Golden
Gopher men’s basketball team.
Last year, Pitino guided the Gophers to their second NCAA Tournament bid in three seasons, along with
just the second tournament victory in nearly 30 years. The Gophers won 22 games, fi nished seventh in
the Big Ten and upset the No. 7-seed Louisville Cardinals in the NCAA fi rst round. Two Gophers in Jor-
dan Murphy and Amir Coffey earned All-Big Ten nods, the former also earning NABC All-District honors.
In his fi fth season, Pitino saw the Gophers achieve several notable achievements. The Gophers were
ranked nationally to begin the season and as high as 12th, while two individuals picked up All-Big Ten
honors. Jordan Murphy earned his third straight All-Big Ten nod after a year in which he led the confer-
ence in rebounding and tied for the nation’s lead in double-doubles (24). Nate Mason received All-Big
Ten honorable mention after capping a career in which he ranked among the all-time Gophers.
The 2017 Big Ten Coach of the Year as voted by the league’s media and head coaches, Pitino led the
Gophers to a school-record 23 regular season wins and an NCAA appearance for the fi rst time since
2013. Earning a No. 5 seed in the tournament - the Gophers’ highest since 1982 - Pitino guided the
Gophers to an 11-win Big Ten season, the most since the 1990 campaign. Four Gophers received
All-Big Ten honors, including First Team selection Nate Mason and Defensive Player of the Year Reggie
Lynch along with third teamer Jordan Murphy and All-Freshman selection Amir Coffey.
The 2016-17 season saw several accomplishments, including the selection of freshman Jordan Murphy
to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. He was the Gophers’ fi rst honoree since 2005 and only the third
ever. The Gophers also picked up signature victories over No. 6 Maryland at home, along with improv-
ing to 3-0 under Pitino in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge after a home victory over Clemson in November.
In 2015-16, the Gophers set a new school single-season record with 313 steals, passing the previous
mark of 297 set in 2007-08. The team averaged 74.2 points per game, the highest since the 2001-02
season and the second straight season under head coach Richard Pitino that the Gophers have
averaged more than 71 points per game. Two of his players garnered All-Big Ten honorable mentions in
guard Andre Hollins (coaches & media) and Maurice Walker (media). In February, the Gophers defeated
then-#25 and eventual Final Four team Michigan State in East Lansing for the fi rst time since 1997
(later vacated) – the team’s fi rst road win over a top-25 team since 2012.
Pitino came to Gold Country after spending one season at the helm of the Florida International Univer-
sity (FIU) basketball program.
Prior to leading FIU, Pitino served as the Associate Head Coach for one season and an assistant for two
other seasons under his father, Rick, at Louisville. In three years overall with the Cardinals, he helped
the program to a combined 88-25 record, a pair of NCAA Elite Eight berths (2008 and 2009) and one
NCAA Final Four appearance (2012). His efforts also helped the Cards land two of top 15 recruiting
classes in his three years (2007-08 and 2008-09). Pitino also spent time as an assistant for two sea-
sons under Billy Donovan at Florida. In his time with the Gators, the club was a combined 50-20 with
back-to back NCAA Tournament appearances, including reaching the 2011 NCAA Southeast Regional
fi nals before falling to NCAA runner-up Butler.
