What is Maths Makes Sense?

Maths makes Sense is a unique, consistent whole school approach created by Richard Dunne, that develops the mathematical understanding that really takes into account how children learn.

Maths Makes Sense recognises the importance of Maths in our daily lives and helps children to:

• Learn the skills of numeracy, geometry and measure that can be used in every day life.

• Develop problem solving and reasoning skills that are so vital in day to day life.

• Develop thinking skills – an invaluable skill in every subject area.

Maths Makes Sense can help us to deliver the aims of the 2014 National Curriculum

• a consistent whole-school approach

• high expectations for all

• fluency with the fundamentals

Children learn concepts comprehensively from Foundation – take for example…

2 + 3 = 5

The consistency of approach allows them in Year 3 to confidently apply their understanding to the addition of fractions…

2/5 + 3/5 = 5/5

And in Y4 they can successfully understand… 2x + 3x = 5x

Maths Makes Sense at St Filumena’s

Through the successful implementation of Maths Makes Sense, we hope to:

• Adapt a consistent whole school approach to the teaching of Mathematics

• Have high expectations for all of our children• Equip them with fluency in number• Create a deep understanding• Give all children the opportunity to become masters of

mathematics• Facilitate opportunities for parent engagement
