3 ZEN – The Research Centre on Zero Emission Neighbourhoods in Smart Cities
Centres for Environment-friendly Energy Research (FME)
The FME scheme is designed to
• Boost innovation and value creation both for companies and public institutions participating in the centre's activities and for Norwegian society at large;
• Help to reduce national and international greenhouse gas emissions, promote more efficient use of energy and increase production of renewable energy;
• Cultivate research groups that are in the forefront of the international research community and that are an integral part of dynamic national and international networks;
• Increase the visibility of research results and promote a knowledge-based debate on environment-friendly energy
The Research Centre on Zero Emission Buildings (ZEB)
The main objective
is to develop competitive products and solutions for existing and new buildings that will lead to market penetration of buildings with zero greenhouse gas emissions related to their production, operation, and demolition.
The centre encompass both residential, commercial, and public buildings.

Over all milestones from ZEB
• We have shown how to make zero emission buildings with the technology of today.
• We have demonstrated the feasibility of zero emission buildings.
• We have started on the technology development of zero emission buildings for tomorrow.
• We have implemented research tools for this development, i.e. laboratories, methods, pilot buildings…
• We are educating Masters of Science and Ph.D.-candidates for the building industry and the research community on zero emission buildings.
• We have shown the next steps for development of the zero emission society (i.e. ZEN).
• The partners in ZEB are implementing (the art of) zero emission buildings in their business strategies (e.g. Powerhouse)
