Alhamdulillah and all praise are to Allah SWT, the most Merciful and
Beneficent who gives guidance, mercies and blessing so the writer is able to finish
this thesis. They are the most perfect words that the writer expresses for this
successful thesis under the title “A Study on Figurative Language Used by Robert
Cormier in the Novel “After the Firts Death”.
The writer would like to express her deepest gratitude towards Dra. Erly
Wahyuni, M.Si. as the first advisor and Dr. Masduki, M.Pd. as the second advisor

IN THE NOVEL "AFTER THE FIRST DEATH”
ABSTRACT
Novel is one form of Literature. Many elements of the novel one the
element is Figurative Language. Figurative language in novel affords readers
imaginative pleasure of literary works, it is a way of bringing additional imagery
into verse, making the abstract concrete, making literary works more sensuous.
Figurative language can make novel become more interesting to read but
sometimes it can make the reader confused. From that explanation the researcher
interested to conduct research about figurative language in novel with determine a
title “A Study on Figurative Language Used by Robert Cormier in the novel
“After the First Death”. The reseacher choose this novel because not many
reseacher conduct reseach about this novel. This novel published by Cornelsen
Verlag in 2000.
The purpose of this study was to identify the types of figurative language
found in “After the First Death”, and explains the meaning of each figurative
language found in “After the First Death” novel.
This study used descriptive qualitative research design. The object of this
study was the novel “After the First Death” written by Robert Cormier. Objective
approach is used in this novel because the reseacher investigated the novel
without relating to the author’s life, audience, and the environing world. The data
of this study is every sentence and phrase that contains figurative language.
After analyzing the data in can be found 97 sentences of figurative
language. The sentences that have figurative language in the novel entitled “After
the First Death” by Robert Cormier are 43 of simile, 19 of personification, 22 of
hyperbole, 6 of metaphor, 3 of metonymy, 2 antitesis, and 2 litotes. meanwhile the
dominant types of figurative language in the novel is simile.
