Who is this man? (10:17)

• Mark refers to him simply as a man• Luke calls him a ruler (most likely of the

synagogue)• Matthew tells us he is young• All gospels state that he is rich• Epitome of a good Christian (leader in the church,

moral, blessed, humble, deferring to Jesus)• Interested in eternal life1/28/18 Vertical Life Church 3

Jesus’ Answer (10:18-22)

• From horizontal to vertical (18)– Jesus chides the man for using the term “good” for a man– Jesus challenges the man’s perspective

• Go to the scriptures for answers (19-20)• Jesus answers his question directly (21-22)

– Jesus confirms rather than reveals that there is something lacking

• This man’s righteousness is horizontal rather than vertical

Jesus Expounds on Requirements for KOG (23-31)

• “How hard it will be for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God!”

• “How hard it is to enter the Kingdom of God!”

• How does this square with “accept Jesus” and “receive Jesus” theology of today?
