SCHOOL INFORMATION

The school regulations at St John’s are based on the fact that the school is a Christian Community. Awareness of others is stressed as the basis of harmonious relationships among staff and students. This awareness expresses itself in:

responsible co-operation

consideration for others shown by respect, courtesy and thoughtfulness for the feelings of others

punctuality

a. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION St. John’s offers parents strong support in their serious parental responsibility to educate their children in the Faith. We do not undertake to do this instead of you; we assist you. You are required to take an active interest in your child’s Religious Education programme and to co-operate with the school’s efforts. All students are expected to attend the Retreats.

b. ATTENDANCE School begins at 8.45 am and ends at 3.10 pm for all students. Written permission from parents is needed to leave school early, or to leave the grounds during school hours. Students must sign out at the Student Services Centre. Persistent lateness to school is a serious breach of the regulations and will result in a detention being issued.

c. ABSENCE The school is to be notified of absences. It is asked that parents telephone the school (Phone 856-7091) or access School-Links via Internet and report your son’s absence. The school is to be notified of the reason for any absence when the student returns to school. The Caregiver should fill in an absence note and the student must show his diary, to the vertical group teacher, on his return to school.

d. MOTOR VEHICLES (cars, motorbikes, scooters etc) Vehicles may be brought to school only with the permission of the College. An official school form must be completed by the parents/guardians of the prospective driver. Students of Year 10 and Year 11 may not bring motor vehicles to school unless it is shown that this is the only mode of transport available. Vehicles are not to be used during school hours without the express permission of the College. Due to a shortage of parking spaces cars without a school parking permit displayed will be towed away. When allocating limited onsite parking priority goes to Year 13 Student Leaders.

e. CYCLISTS The wearing of cycle helmets is compulsory. Helmets are to be worn correctly whenever a cycle is used. Cyclists leave the College via Hillcrest Road. Cyclists are NOT permitted to exit via the driveway down to Edinburgh Road. All cycles must have an ID engraved under the axle.

f. SKATEBOARDS Skateboards may not be used within school grounds and must be stored in the Storage Room opposite M03 during the day. The school accepts no responsibility for lost or damaged skateboards, cars or bikes.

Page 7: A Student Diary

h. CONTACTING STUDENTS Those who wish to contact students during the school day, whether in person or by telephone, must do so only through the school office. No cell phones are to be used during class time or assemblies for text messaging or call. The school has a telephone available for students’ use at the discretion of the office staff

i. STUDENT ILLNESS OR INJURY Students who, during the school day, feel too unwell to attend class are required to report to the school office. If necessary the student will be placed in the school sick-bay. Students will only be allowed to leave school during the school day once the office has contacted the students’ home and is sure that a parent/caregiver is there. In the event of a student receiving an injury at school, the school office must be notified. Injuries of a minor nature will be dealt with by school staff and, where necessary, the student’s home will be notified. Should the school feel that further medical attention is required, parents/caregivers will be contacted and it is their responsibility to take whatever action they feel is appropriate. Should it not be possible to contact parents/caregivers, the school reserves the right to obtain, at parents’/caregivers’ expense, whatever reasonable medical assistance is appropriate.

j. LEAVING SCHOOL Students finishing their time at school, either transferring to another school or going into the work force or to tertiary education, must obtain a Leaving Form from the school office. This form must be signed by the pupil’s subject teachers, the Librarian, Careers Advisor, Sports Director and the School Administrator. The form is then returned to the office. When these formalities are completed, the Leaving Certificate will be issued to those who are eligible. Testimonials — senior students leaving school should apply to the Principal’s Secretary for testimonials.

k. LOST AND FOUND All property should be clearly named. Items lost should be reported to the Student Service Centre. Items found should be handed in there.

l. HOMEWORK POLICY Each department sets its own homework policy based on the style of teaching to occur for a given topic. A guideline for parents/guardians however, is that they can expect their son to do a total of an hour to an hour and a half each weekday at Year 9 level, with time increasing for each Year level thereafter. Sometimes work will be set for the night or it may be set as a longer term assignment requiring the student to spread his own workload to suit the demand. Parents/guardians are advised to keep track of progress through checking and signing their son’s homework diary, once a week, for work to be done. Blank pages will indicate a general failure to record homework set. Please use the diary to communicate with the vertical group teacher if there are any queries.

BYOD FAQS for Students 2016

What are the expectations of me as a student? You have chosen to bring a device to school to support and enhance your learning. You are responsible for: - following the Mobile Device Guidelines and the college Cybersafety Student Usage Agreement on the use of devices - keeping your device safe - protecting your device from damage - ensuring your device is used for appropriate and acceptable purposes only - taking measures to keep yourself safe on-line - ensuring the device is fully charged Can I use my device in class whenever I want to? No. Your teacher will let you know when it is okay to use your device. There may be times when it is inappropriate to use a device, such as during an assessment activity, science experiment or practical work, or when devices aren’t needed for the lesson your teacher is delivering. Devices must be in your bag and turned off unless the teacher says that you can use them. Devices need to be clearly visible to the teacher when in use. The device is to be turned off or its’ cover/lid fully or partially closed, and the use visibly discontinued when a teacher requests that you do so. If the teacher asks you to put your device away in your bag, to stop using the device, or to hand the device to them, you must do so quickly and without argument. Mobile Device Guidelines apply. No music is to be played in class through a mobile device. Is a smartphone a device? You can use your smartphones. While sometimes useful in a classroom they obviously have more limited use than laptops (notebooks, ultrabooks, netbooks), tablets (Windows 8, Android, iPads) and Chromebooks. Because of this it is recommended that you don’t use your wireless access password on them (see ‘Can I use my password on more than one device?’). As with all devices, smartphone use is at the discretion of the teacher. They must be in your bag and turned off unless the teacher says that you can use them. Smartphones also need to be clearly visible to the teacher when in use, and turned off or the use visibly discontinued when a teacher requests that you do so. If the teacher asks you to put your smartphone away in your bag, to stop using it, or to hand it to them, you must do so quickly and without argument. They are ideal for activities such as taking a photo of the whiteboard and for recording homework but remember to ask your teacher before you use them. Mobile Device Guidelines apply to smartphones and mobile phones. Can I use my device at school outside of the classroom? Yes. Devices may be used outside of the classroom between periods, before and after school, at interval and lunchtime. Mobile Device Guidelines apply during these times. Can I access the internet at school, and how do I do this? Yes. You can access this through the school wireless network. You will need to connect to SJPublic. Once connected you will need to go to your web browser and try and access a website. You will be redirected to our portal page and will be required to enter your normal network credentials. This will give you access to the internet for that day. Note that all network traffic is audited and filtered. Can I use the wireless on more than one device? Yes, although each student will be allowed a maximum of two devices. If you change your device, you will need to notify IT Support. To allow for the effective use of devices in the classroom, it is very important that your password only be used on our recommended devices - laptops (notebooks, ultrabooks, netbooks), tablets (Windows 8, Android, iPads) and Chromebooks.

Page 14: A Student Diary

Can I Access the Student shared R: drive or my H: drive from the school network? No. You only have access to the internet through the school wireless network which is why we are promoting the use of Google Drive via your Google Account. We will be investigating access to your h: drive during 2016. Can I print to printers or photocopiers from my device? No. To print, you will need to either email your work to your school Gmail account, save to your school Google Drive account (or similar cloud storage such as Dropbox or SkyDrive) or to a USB, then use one of the school owned computers in the ICT labs, library or Faculty areas, or at home, to access your work and print it out. Where should I keep any work I do on my device? If you are wishing to make notes or create documents on your device, cloud storage on Google Drive is encouraged (this is easily accessed through your student Google account) and/or regular back-up on USBs, SD cards or portable hard drives. It is your responsibility to keep your work safe. Will I need apps on my device? The most important app to have installed initially is the Google Chrome browser. In order to meet the device recommendations and requirements for productivity, some devices will require apps that may need to be purchased. However, at the start of 2016, no subject specific apps will need to be purchased (PE is the exception). Your teachers will be aiming to use online resources, web based tools and free apps rather than software and apps that cost. If you find apps that suit a task that you are doing in class, you are welcome to download it for use (free or at cost) if you choose to do so. This may change during 2016 as teachers become more familiar with apps to support and enhance learning. Where can I get help with my device? St John’s College staff are not responsible for the technical aspects of device use. This includes all teaching, ICT and support staff. Any IT support will be limited to verbal and/or written instructions. Where can I store my device safely? At the moment there are no specific on-site storage facilities. You will want to have the device with you most of the day and at other times you should lock it in your locker. You are responsible for your device and will carry it around with you during the school day. Make sure that you have recorded the device serial number in your diary. Where can I charge my battery? Your device should ideally have a battery that lasts the whole school day. Charge your device as soon as you get home each night so that it has enough battery to last the school day. There are limited power points in classrooms, and it is at the discretion of the teacher as to whether you can charge a device in a classroom. The school does not provide chargers. Can a teacher look at my device? Yes. A teacher can ask you to show them your device, what you are doing and how you are using it at any time. This includes both inside and outside of the classroom. It is suggested that your school based apps and browsers are on the first screen if you have an iPad or Android tablet, keeping your private apps separate from school based activities. What are the consequences if I am not using my device as I should be? What is considered to be inappropriate use of a device? See the Mobile Device Guidelines.

PB4L at St John’s College

St John’s College runs a behaviour management system called Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L).

It is a positive and mostly proactive method of dealing with student behaviour across the entire

school. The Behavior Matrix sets the parameters describing what we expect of all staff and students

at St John’s College. This matrix is displayed in many locations across the school and can be found in

all classrooms.

Student Affirmation System

SJC operates a merit programme that acknowledges students for behaving in a way that reflects our

Marist Pillars at school. This system is accumulative throughout their entire time at SJC and is held in

high regard by all. The general thrust is to recognize continuous or exceptionally high standards of

behaviour, academic, sporting, artistic or cultural performance.
