more special by the announcement of win-ners for the Filipino Cultural Center Founda-tion fundraising raffle.

The winners of the grand prize, $5,000 in cash, were Dr. Wendell and Mrs. Lita Doronio. The Doronios then made a deci-sion on the spot that they would donate the cash back to the FCCF in support of the Filipino Cultural Center. It was certainly a surprise announcement that made for a very

happy ending.

The September Affair closed to the music of the Flip Side band. A full dance floor continued well into the night.

Know Your Filipino Heroes #2: Lapu Lapu By Manuel P. Pardo, M.D.

From the greatest of all Filipino heroes, the national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, we go to the very first of Filipino He-roes, Lapu Lapu of Mactan, a town near Cebu.

It should be noted that the Portuguese-born Fernando de Magalhaes, or Ferdinand Magellan in English, was sailing under the flag of Spain when he came upon the island of Cebu on April 7, 1521. It is officially the date of discovery of the Philippine Islands, named after Philip II of Spain. The purpose of Magellan’s voyage was to find the Spice Islands (Moluccas) and bring back rich spices that would gener-ate a hefty profit to those who provided the funds for the voyage.

With 5 ships and 234 men, Magellan sailed from Seville, Spain, to the vast ocean and the unknown that faced them. Magellan was the first European to visit the island of Cebu where brown-skinned natives were already involved in trade with China

and Siam (Thailand). The leader of the tribe in Cebu was Rajah Homabon. He decided to make friends with Magellan. However, Lapu Lapu, the ruler of Mactan, decided to defy Magellan.

An epic battle took place on April 27, 1521, between the 41-year-old Magellan and the 27-year-old tribal warrior. According to the account of Pigafetta, Magellan’s chroni-cler, 60 steel-clad soldiers and 1,000 men of Humabon came to Mactan to teach Lapu Lapu a lesson. Magellan was so over confident he asked Humabon to keep his men in their boats and sim-ply watch him and 49 of his armored men with muskets, lances, and arrows annihilate Lapu Lapu’s men.

Little did Magellan know Lapu Lapu had a strategy all planned. With 1,500 men armed with arrows and bam-boo spears hardened by fire and tipped with poison, they were positioned into a right, center, and left flank with Lapu Lapu himself taking charge of the center flank.

The natives knew to aim for the legs of the Spaniards, which was the only exposed portion of their body not covered by metal.

They charged courageously until Magellan was hit in the left leg with a poisoned ar-row. As he fell, Lapu Lapu hit him in the head with a pestle killing him instantly. They kept his body as a trophy. The rest of Magellan’s men retreated to their ship. The combat lasted more than an hour. What eventually hap-pened to Magellan’s body is unknown.

History has also lost track of Lapu Lapu. It is unknown where or when he died. One thing is known for certain, and that is Lapu Lapu was the first Filipino to have re-pelled European aggression and thus has to be consid-ered the first Filipino hero. Of the 234 men in 5 ships that left Spain, only 18 men in 1 ship, the Victoria, re-turned to Spain in 1522, the first ship to sail around the world. And, yes, they did bring back a load of spices.

Photo: An enjoyable September Affair was evidenced in these bright smiles.

Health Notes By Cory Sorio

Brace up for the FLU season

Fall is upon us. And the cooler weather reminds us that the flu sea-son is right around the corner. Flu outbreaks occur in the late fall and winter and can easily reach epidemic proportions. Just like the common cold it is a respiratory infection caused by a virus and is easily spread through respiratory droplets from sneezing and coughing. However, the flu is far more serious and can lead to more severe and life-threatening illnesses such as bronchitis, pneumo-nia, dehydration, and worsening of chronic medical conditions such as congestive heart failure, asthma, or diabetes, resulting in hospitalization and even death.

Anyone can get the flu. It can be spread to others before symptoms start and up to 5 days after becoming sick. The symptoms include: general body aches, fever, headache, chills, extreme exhaustion, dry cough, sore throat, and stuffy nose. Treatment for the flu consists of the following:

Bed rest and plenty of fluids. Tylenol for fever and body

aches. NO Aspirin to children who have the flu because of the risk for Reye’s syndrome. Antiviral medicines to shorten

the duration and severity of symptoms if started within 48 hours after the onset of symp-toms. Consult your health care provider.

Complications usually appear after one starts feeling better. After a brief period of improvement, one may suddenly develop high fever, severe chills, chest pain with each breath, and cough that produces thick, yel-low-greenish-colored mucus. Chil-dren may have febrile convulsions, croup and middle ear infections. Contact your health care provider immediately to get the appropriate treatment

Immunization is the best way to protect yourself from the flu. Last year’s vaccine won’t protect you this year because the strains of the flu virus change from year to year. There are 2 types of vaccines:

The “flu shot” is an inactivated vaccine (containing killed virus) that is given as an injection. It is approved for use in people older than 6 months, including healthy people and people with chronic disease. The nasal-spray flu vaccine is

made with live, weakened flu viruses and is approved for use in healthy people 5 years to 49 years of age who are not preg-nant.

The best time to get vaccinated is in October or November because it takes about 2 weeks for the body to produce the antibodies. However, getting vaccinated anytime during the flu season can still be beneficial. The flu vaccine can cause side effects such as soreness at the injection site, low grade fever, tiredness, and sore muscles. The vaccine does not cause the flu. One may get the flu after getting vaccinated and before the antibodies are developed. Viruses for producing the vaccine are grown in chicken eggs so if you are allergic to eggs or have ever had a serious aller-gic reaction to the flu vaccine, you

should consult with your health care provider before getting vaccinated.

If you are in any of the following groups or live in a household with someone who is, you should get the flu vaccine:

You are 50 years of age or older. You have diabetes or any chronic

disease of the heart, lungs, or kidneys. You have an immune system that

does not function properly e.g. HIV infection You have a severe form of ane-

mia. You will be more than 3 months

pregnant during the flu season. You are in close contact with

children 0-23 months of age. You are a health care provider or

volunteer who work with any of the above groups

Some healthy habits that can lower your risk during the flu season in-clude the following:

Avoid crowds if possible. Keep your distance from people who are sick.

Stay home when you are sick. Cover your mouth and nose when

coughing or sneezing. Use tis-sues, not a handkerchief. Dispose used tissues properly. Wash your hands often. It’s the

single, most important means of preventing the spread of infec-tion. Avoid touching your mouth, nose

or eyes. Flu viruses can get into your body through these open-ings. Stay as healthy as possible with

regular exercise and nutritious diet.

So…roll up your sleeves…get immunized. And enjoy the wonders of winter and the holidays.
