A SPECIAL EDITION TO CELEBRATE THE BLESSING & OPENING

OF OUR PARISH PASTORAL CENTRE BY FR KIERAN MCDERMOTT

‘Le Lih’

The scaffolding is finally gone and the lights are lit to highlight

the beauful restoraon and refurbishing of Holy Cross Church

and Pastoral Centre in the heart of Dundrum Village. In last

month’s issue we carried an arcle and disncve cover about

Imagine Dundrum, a movement to retain the community

elements of Dundrum village in the face of planned on-going

development of the old shopping centre.

This month’s cover is the unique and longstanding church

building on the main street, which has undergone many chang-

es over the years to accommodate the transion of the original

village from country outpost, to housing the increased popula-

on of Catholics who arrived with the residenal developments

in the 1950’s and 60’s. The church building has seen thousands

of liturgical gatherings of the community over many years. It

holds a special place in the minds and hearts of the many who

have entered its doors for weekday or Sunday Mass, marked

the special events of their lives, including births, marriages and

deaths of family, friends or neighbours or just popped in to

pray quietly in mes of need.

Now the church and its environs have entered a new phase of

its being. Thanks to funding sought and received from the de-

velopers of the Town Centre, in exchange for the use of church lands to link the ‘old’ shopping centre to newer develop-

ment up the road, the church and the former dark rather ugly parish centre under the church have undergone a major

transformaon.

This work didn’t happen overnight! For about ten years plong and planning has been underway. A hardworking, com-

mied and visionary group of parishioners liaised with former Parish Priest Donal Doherty and his successors Fr. Kieran

McDermo and Fr. John Bracken to bring a project of restoraon and building work to fruion. And now it is almost

there!

Many readers will have seen the work done on the church to date. The frontage onto the main road in the village has

been extensively enhanced. The outside stonework has been repointed and cleaned. The gardens have been revamped

with aracve planng and outside seang installed, and the railings have been relocated and adapted to form wide

aracve gates. A magnificent solid cross stands as a reminder that this is Holy Cross Church! (connued on page 3)

You may find this picture of a woman liberang or irritang!

There is no doubt that she is making use of her me and

talents.

Second reading 1 Thessalonians 5:1-6

Early Chrisans did wonder when the end would be. Paul

doesn’t know when but he does know how to live in prepara-

on. No sleepwalking through life!

Gospel Mt 25:14-20

A talent was a measure of weight and then a coin. Our word

“talent” helps us to enter into the parable.

With the addion of clever lighng outside and of inside windows lit up at night, the tone

set is one of welcome, of vibrancy and of invitaon to come and see. Closed for nine months

in 2016, the building opened its doors again last Christmas Eve and the brightness and the

beauty revealed inside has been a talking point ever since.

The centre aisle, the altars and the bapsmal font are works of art in beauful marble with

arsc liturgical symbols. Much of this work was done by local arsts and craspeople. In-

deed some unknown treasures were uncovered when the paint and dirt of years was

stripped away to reveal sandstone and marble, and even gold in exisng statues and arte-

facts. New lighng was installed. The stained glass windows were restored and reposioned

to allow maximum natural light to reflect off the white marble and the porch was revamped

to enhance the sense of welcome and inclusion of the outside world into the inner building.

At the rear of the church and crossing over the bridge coming from Ballinteer, there is now a

spectacular architectural addion of a contemporary landmark feature. With interesng

shaped windows, this unique atrium enhances the supply of natural light to what was

formerly a basement area of dismal quality light. The new building covers an aracve

stairway to the lower area of the church which houses a magnificent pastoral centre. Once

again aracve lighng brightens up the vista, as this feature is designed to enhance the visu-

al experience from the Town Centre and to highlight the posion of the church in the midst of

commercial acvity.

The vast area behind and underneath the church has been transformed into an accessible

bright space, with excellent facilies and considerable scope for parish and community

events. There is a new parish office, and two disabled toilets. There is a li from the church

and parish office down to the hall, coffee dock and meeng rooms to make these accessible for all comers. It is hoped that

this li will also, in me, allow for direct access to the church from the adjoining car-park, now fied out by the Town Cen-

tre. This car-park is accessible from the main street and is available to those who are going to church service. It is inter-

esng to note that while it is cketed, it is free for 20 minutes aer each service and the exit opens onto the Dundrum by-

pass. Otherwise the cost is charged.

In order to fully appreciate all the work that has gone on in this modernisa-

on, it is well worth a visit, and worthy of showing to vising guests to the

neighbourhood. And don’t miss the magnificent works by two naonally and

internaonally renowned stained glass arsts, our local Evie Hone and Mi-

chael Healy who worked together in An Túr Gloinne studios – the blue Ro-

sary window by Healy and the recently acquired original ‘sketch for a win-

dow’ by Hone.

Great credit must go to those wise and far-seeing people who envisaged

what was possible and worked so hard to get all the ducks in a row to bring

it to compleon. It is a credit to them and to the architects NDBA, under

Niall Brennan who put flesh on the vision, alongside the crasmen who un-

covered and reshaped the final building and rebuilding.

Now all that remains is to get the wherewithal to pay for the refurbishment of the magnificent organ, and to equip the

pastoral centre with tables and chairs and delph! It is fing that the pastoral centre will be formally opened and blessed

on 18th

November as the final duty of the out-going Parish priest Fr. Kieran who now moves on to the posion of

Administrator in the Pro-Cathedral.
