OUR HISTORYAngloAmericanwasfoundedin1917inSouthAfricabySirErnestOppenheimer,raisingfinancialbackingforanewgoldminingcompanyfromtheUKandtheUS,hencethenameofthecompany.In1926,ourlongassociationwithDeBeersbeganandthatcontinuestothisday,withAngloAmericanbecomingitslargestsingleshareholder.

SirErnestOppenheimerestablishedanunderlyingvision“tomakeprofitsforourshareholders,buttodosoinsuchawayastomakearealandlastingcontributiontothecommunitiesinwhichweoperate.”

ItisaphilosophythatisembeddedinourDNAandwell-alignedwithourmorerecentlydevelopedcorporatepurpose.

AngloAmerican’ssuccessoversubsequentdecadessawitinvestincoal,steel,paperandmanyotherindustriesinSouthAfrica,whilealsoinvestinginmininginNorthandSouthAmerica.In1999,AngloAmericanmergeditsglobalinterests,moveditsheadquartersandprimarystockmarketlistingtoLondonandcontinuedtogrow,includingintoAustralia,ChileandPeru,whilealsobuildingaglobalMarketingbusinesstobetterconnectourcustomerstotheproductsweprovide.

DE BEERS (DIAMONDS)DeBeersoperatesacrossallkeypartsofthediamondvaluechain,includingexploration,production,sorting,valuingandsellingofroughdiamonds,andthemarketingandretailingofpolisheddiamondjewellery.AngloAmericanowns85%ofDeBeers,theworld’sleadingdiamondcompany.Thebalanceof15%ofDeBeersisownedbytheGovernmentoftheRepublicofBotswana.DeBeersanditspartnersproducearoundonethirdoftheworld’sroughdiamonds,byvalue.

COPPERInChile,wehaveinterestsintwomajorcopperoperations:a50.1%interestintheLosBroncesmine,whichwemanageandoperate,anda44%shareintheCollahuasimine.WealsomanageandoperatetheElSoldadomineandChagressmelter,wherewehavea50.1%interestineach.InPeru,weown60%ofQuellaveco,anewworld-classminewearedevelopingtowardsfirstproductionin2022.

Around60%oftotalglobaldemandforcopperisforelectricaluse–wire,cablesandconnectors,includinginvehiclesandconsumerelectronics.20%isusedinconstruction:waterpipesandroofsheetsbenefitfromcopper’sresistancetocorrosion.Copper’sthermalconductivitymakesitidealforairconditioningandrefrigeration.It’salsocommonlyusedinhospitals,owingtoitsantibacterialqualities.

Copperwillbeincreasinglyindemandforuseinelectricandotherlowemissionvehicles;battery,hydrogenfuelcellandotherformsofelectricandhybridvehiclesrequiresubstantiallymorecopperthanconventionalinternalcombustionvehicles.

PLATINUM GROUP METALS (PGMS)AngloAmericanisaleadingproducerofplatinumgroupmetals.ThemajorityofouroperationsarelocatedintheBushveldComplexinSouthAfrica.WealsoownandoperateUnkimineinZimbabwe.

Platinum,palladiumandrhodiumenablecatalyticconverterstocleanvehicleexhaustgases,anddemandforPGMsfromthecarindustrycontinuestogrowasemissionsregulationsbecomeevermorestringent.Platinumhasagreatrangeofotherusesinthechemical,electrical,medical,glassandpetroleumindustries.Andwithgrowingconcernaboutourenvironmentandenergycostsandavailability,platinumhasaroletoplayasthecatalystinfuelcelltechnology,includingforhydrogenfuelcellelectricvehicles(FCEVs)andpowergenerators.

IRON OREAngloAmerican’sironoreoperationsprovidecustomerswithpremiumqualityironoreproductswhichhelpoursteelcustomersmeetevertighteremissionsstandards.InSouthAfrica,wehaveamajority(69.7%)shareinKumbaIronOre,whileinBrazilwehavethefullyintegratedMinas-Riooperation.

Ofallthemetalsthatmakemodernlifepossible,steelisthemostwidelyused–andironoreisitsmainingredient.Overhalfoftheworld’ssteelisusedinconstruction,includingbuildings,railwaysandroads.Steelisalsousedtomanufacturevehicles,machinery,householdappliancesandmanyotheritemsessentialtoeverydaylife.

COALAngloAmericanistheworld’sthirdlargestexporterofmetallurgicalcoalforsteelmaking,withouroperationsinAustraliaproducinghighqualityproductsforourcustomersacrossAsia,India,EuropeandSouthAmerica.OurminesinSouthAfricaanda33%shareofCerrejóninColombiaproducethermalcoalforaffordableelectricitygeneration.

Whilethermalcoalproducesaround40%oftheworld’selectricity,werecogniseitseffectontheenvironmentandareonatrajectoryawayfromproducingthermalcoal,doingsoresponsibly.

NICKEL AND MANGANESEOurNickelassetsarewhollyowned,consistingoftwoferronickeloperations:BarroAltoandCodemininBrazil.InManganese,wehavea40%minorityshareholdinginSamancorHoldingswithoperationsinSouthAfricaandAustralia.

Thestainlesssteelindustryusestwo-thirdsoftheworld’snickelproductionandvirtuallyallferronickelproducedeachyear.Moststainlesssteelscontainabout8-10%nickel.Thebalanceisusedmainlyinthemanufactureofalloysteelandothernon-ferrousalloys.Stainlesssteelisakeyinputinhigh-techdesignandconstruction.

Themostsignificantofalltheindustrialusesofmanganeseisalsosteelproduction,whichusesmorethan85%ofallmanganesemined.Theoreisparticularlyusefulinincreasingsteel’sresistancetooxidation;itcanalsoimprovetheoverallstrength,durabilityandworkabilityofsteel.
