It features six 16-bit A/D conversion channels each of which provide 77 dB signal-to- noise ratio over a dc to 4 kHz signal bandwidth. Each channel also features a programmable input gain amplifier (PGA) with gain settings in eight stages from 0 dB to 38 dB. The AD73360 is particularly suitable for industrial power me- tering as each channel samples synchronously, ensuring that there is no (phase) delay between the conversions. The AD73360 also features low group delay conversions on all channels. An on-chip reference voltage is included and is programmable to accommodate either 3 V or 5 V operation. The sampling rate of the device is programmable with four separate settings offering 64 kHz, 32 kHz, 16 kHz and 8 kHz sampling rates (from a master clock of 16.384 MHz). A serial port (SPORT) allows easy interfacing of single or cas- caded devices to industry standard DSP engines. The SPORT transfer rate is programmable to allow interfacing to both fast and slow DSP engines. The AD73360 is available in 28-lead SOIC and 44-lead TQFP packages.

REFERENCE

GENERAL DESCRIPTIONThe AD73360 is a six-input channel analog front-end processorfor general purpose applications including industrial power

metering or multichannel analog inputs. It features six 16-bitA/D conversion channels each of which provide 77 dB signal-to-noise ratio over a dc to 4 kHz signal bandwidth. Each channelalso features a programmable input gain amplifier (PGA) withgain settings in eight stages from 0 dB to 38 dB.

The AD73360 is particularly suitable for industrial power me-tering as each channel samples synchronously, ensuring that thereis no (phase) delay between the conversions. The AD73360 alsofeatures low group delay conversions on all channels.

An on-chip reference voltage is included and is programmableto accommodate either 3 V or 5 V operation.

The sampling rate of the device is programmable with fourseparate settings offering 64 kHz, 32 kHz, 16 kHz and 8 kHzsampling rates (from a master clock of 16.384 MHz).

A serial port (SPORT) allows easy interfacing of single or cas-caded devices to industry standard DSP engines. The SPORTtransfer rate is programmable to allow interfacing to both fastand slow DSP engines.

The AD73360 is available in 28-lead SOIC and 44-lead TQFPpackages.

SDI Serial Data Input of the AD73360. Both data and control information may be input on this pin and are clocked onthe negative edge of SCLK. SDI is ignored when SE is low.

SE SPORT Enable. Asynchronous input enable pin for the SPORT. When SE is set low by the DSP, the output pinsof the SPORT are three-stated and the input pins are ignored. SCLK is also disabled internally in order to decreasepower dissipation. When SE is brought high, the control and data registers of the SPORT are at their original values(before SE was brought low); however, the timing counters and other internal registers are at their reset values.

TERMINOLOGYAbsolute GainAbsolute gain is a measure of converter gain for a known signal.Absolute gain is measured (differentially) with a 1 kHz sinewave at 0 dBm0 for each ADC. The absolute gain specificationis used for gain tracking error specification.

CrosstalkCrosstalk is due to coupling of signals from a given channel toan adjacent channel. It is defined as the ratio of the amplitude ofthe coupled signal to the amplitude of the input signal. Crosstalkis expressed in dB.

Gain Tracking ErrorGain tracking error measures changes in converter output fordifferent signal levels relative to an absolute signal level. Theabsolute signal level is 0 dBm0 (equal to absolute gain) at 1 kHzfor each ADC. Gain tracking error at 0 dBm0 (ADC) is 0 dB bydefinition.

FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTIONGeneral DescriptionThe AD73360 is a six-channel, 16-bit, analog front end. Itcomprises six independent encoder channels each featuringsignal conditioning, programmable gain amplifier, sigma-deltaA/D convertor and decimator sections. Each of these sections isdescribed in further detail below.

Encoder ChannelEach encoder channel consists of a signal conditioner, aswitched capacitor PGA and a sigma-delta analog-to-digitalconverter (ADC). An on-board digital filter, which forms partof the sigma-delta ADC, also performs critical system-levelfiltering. Due to the high level of oversampling, the inputantialias requirements are reduced such that a simple single poleRC stage is sufficient to give adequate attenuation in the bandof interest.

Signal ConditionerEach analog channel has an independent signal conditioningblock. This allows the analog input to be configured by the userdepending on whether differential or single-ended mode is used.

Programmable Gain AmplifierEach encoder section’s analog front end comprises a switchedcapacitor PGA that also forms part of the sigma-delta modula-tor. The SC sampling frequency is DMCLK/8. The PGA,whose programmable gain settings are shown in Table IV, maybe used to increase the signal level applied to the ADC from lowoutput sources such as microphones, and can be used to avoidplacing external amplifiers in the circuit. The input signal levelto the sigma-delta modulator should not exceed the maximuminput voltage permitted.

The PGA gain is set by bits IGS0, IGS1 and IGS2 in controlRegisters D, E and F.

ADCEach channel has its own ADC consisting of an analog sigma-delta modulator and a digital antialiasing decimation filter. Thesigma-delta modulator noise-shapes the signal and produces1-bit samples at a DMCLK/8 rate. This bitstream, representingthe analog input signal, is input to the antialiasing decimationfilter. The decimation filter reduces the sample rate and in-creases the resolution.

Analog Sigma-Delta ModulatorThe AD73360 input channels employ a sigma-delta conversiontechnique, which provides a high resolution 16-bit output withsystem filtering being implemented on-chip.

Sigma-delta converters employ a technique known as over-sampling, where the sampling rate is many times the highestfrequency of interest. In the case of the AD73360, the initialsampling rate of the sigma-delta modulator is DMCLK/8. Themain effect of oversampling is that the quantization noise isspread over a very wide bandwidth, up to fS/2 = DMCLK/16(Figure 6a). This means that the noise in the band of interest ismuch reduced. Another complementary feature of sigma-deltaconverters is the use of a technique called noise-shaping. Thistechnique has the effect of pushing the noise from the band ofinterest to an out-of-band position (Figure 6b). The combina-tion of these techniques, followed by the application of a digitalfilter, reduces the noise in band sufficiently to ensure gooddynamic performance from the part (Figure 6c).

Figure 7 shows the various stages of filtering that are employedin a typical AD73360 application. In Figure 7a we see the trans-fer function of the external analog antialias filter. Even though itis a single RC pole, its cutoff frequency is sufficiently far awayfrom the initial sampling frequency (DMCLK/8) that it takescare of any signals that could be aliased by the sampling fre-quency. This also shows the major difference between the initialoversampling rate and the bandwidth of interest. In Figure 7b,the signal and noise-shaping responses of the sigma-delta modu-lator are shown. The signal response provides further rejectionof any high frequency signals while the noise-shaping will pushthe inherent quantization noise to an out-of-band position. Thedetail of Figure 7c shows the response of the digital decima-tion filter (Sinc-cubed response) with nulls every multiple ofDMCLK/256, which is the decimation filter update rate. Thefinal detail in Figure 7d shows the application of a final antialiasfilter in the DSP engine. This has the advantage of being imple-mented according to the user’s requirements and availableMIPS. The filtering in Figures 7a through 7c is implemented inthe AD73360.

Decimation FilterThe digital filter used in the AD73360 carries out two importantfunctions. Firstly, it removes the out-of-band quantization noise,which is shaped by the analog modulator and secondly, it deci-mates the high frequency bitstream to a lower rate 15-bit word.

The antialiasing decimation filter is a sinc-cubed digital filterthat reduces the sampling rate from DMCLK/8 to DMCLK/256, and increases the resolution from a single bit to 15 bits. ItsZ transform is given as: [(1–Z–32)/(1–Z–1)]3. This ensures a mini-mal group delay of 25 µs.

ADC CodingThe ADC coding scheme is in twos complement format (seeFigure 8). The output words are formed by the decimationfilter, which grows the word length from the single-bit output ofthe sigma-delta modulator to a 15-bit word, which is the finaloutput of the ADC block. In 16-bit Data Mode this value is leftshifted with the LSB being set to 0. For input values equal to orgreater than positive full scale, however, the output word is setat 0x7FFF, which has the LSB set to 1. In mixed Control/DataMode, the resolution is fixed at 15 bits, with the MSB of the16-bit transfer being used as a flag bit to indicate either controlor data in the frame.

Voltage ReferenceThe AD73360 reference, REFCAP, is a bandgap reference thatprovides a low noise, temperature-compensated reference to theADC. A buffered version of the reference is also made availableon the REFOUT pin and can be used to bias other externalanalog circuitry. The reference has a default nominal value of1.25 V but can be set to a nominal value of 2.5 V by setting the5VEN bit (CRC:7) of CRC. The 5 V mode is generally onlyusable when VDD = 5 V.

The reference output (REFOUT) can be enabled for biasingexternal circuitry by setting the RU bit (CRC:6) of CRC.

Serial Port (SPORT)The AD73360s communicate with a host processor via thebidirectional synchronous serial port (SPORT) which is compat-ible with most modern DSPs. The SPORT is used to transmitand receive digital data and control information. MultipleAD73360s be cascaded together (up to a limit of eight) to pro-vide additional input channels.

In both transmit and receive modes, data is transferred at theserial clock (SCLK) rate with the MSB being transferred first.

Due to the fact that the SPORT of each AD73360 block uses acommon serial register for serial input and output, communica-tions between an AD73360 and a host processor (DSP engine)must always be initiated by the AD73360s themselves. In thisconfiguration the AD73360s are described as being in Mastermode. This ensures that there is no collision between input dataand output samples.

SPORT OverviewThe AD73360 SPORT is a flexible, full-duplex, synchronousserial port whose protocol has been designed to allow up toeight AD73360 devices to be connected in cascade, to a singleDSP via a six-wire interface. It has a very flexible architecturethat can be configured by programming two of the internalcontrol registers in each device. The AD73360 SPORT hasthree distinct modes of operation: Control Mode, Data Modeand Mixed Control/Data Mode.

NOTE: As each AD73360 has its own SPORT section, theregister settings in both SPORTs must be programmed. Theregisters which control SPORT and sample rate operation (CRAand CRB) must be programmed with the same values, otherwiseincorrect operation may occur.

In Program Mode (CRA:0 = 0), the device’s internal configura-tion can be programmed by writing to the eight internal controlregisters. In this mode, control information can be written to orread from the AD73360. In Data Mode (CRA:0 = 1), any infor-mation that is sent to the device is ignored, while the encodersection (ADC) data is read from the device. In this mode, onlyADC data is read from the device. Mixed mode (CRA:0 = 1and CRA:1 = 1) allows the user to send control information andreceive either control information or ADC data. This is achievedby using the MSB of the 16-bit frame as a flag bit. Mixed modereduces the resolution to 15 bits with the MSB being used toindicate whether the information in the 16-bit frame is controlinformation or ADC data.

The SPORT features a single 16-bit serial register that is usedfor both input and output data transfers. As the input and out-put data must share the same register there are some precau-tions that must be observed. The primary precaution is that noinformation must be written to the SPORT without reference to

an output sample event, which is when the serial register will beoverwritten with the latest ADC sample word. Once the SPORTstarts to output the latest ADC word, it is safe for the DSP towrite new control words to the AD73360. In certain configura-tions, data can be written to the device to coincide with theoutput sample being shifted out of the serial register—see sectionon interfacing devices. The serial clock rate (CRB:2–3) defineshow many 16-bit words can be written to a device before thenext output sample event will happen.

The SPORT block diagram, shown in Figure 9, details the blocksassociated with AD73360 including the eight control registers(A–H), external MCLK to internal DMCLK divider and serialclock divider. The divider rates are controlled by the setting ofControl Register B. The AD73360 features a master clockdivider that allows users the flexibility of dividing externallyavailable high frequency DSP or CPU clocks to generate a lowerfrequency master clock internally in the AD73360 which may bemore suitable for either serial transfer or sampling rate require-ments. The master clock divider has five divider options (÷1default condition, ÷2, ÷3, ÷4, ÷5) that are set by loading themaster clock divider field in Register B with the appropriatecode (see Table VI). Once the internal device master clock(DMCLK) has been set using the master clock divider, thesample rate and serial clock settings are derived from DMCLK.

SPORT Register MapsThere are eight control registers for the AD73360, each eightbits wide. Table V shows the control register map for theAD73360. The first two control registers, CRA and CRB, arereserved for controlling the SPORT. They hold settings forparameters such as bit rate, internal master clock rate and de-vice count. If multiple AD73360s are cascaded, registers CRAand CRB on each device must be programmed with the same

setting to ensure correct operation (this is shown in the pro-gramming examples). The other six registers; CRC throughCRH are used to hold control settings for the Reference, PowerControl, ADC channel and PGA sections of the device. It isnot necessary that the contents of CRC through CRH oneach AD73360 are similar. Control registers are written to onthe negative edge of SCLK.

Control Register A

CRA:0 Data/Program Mode. This bit controls the operating mode of the AD73360. If CRA:1 is 0, then a 0 in this bitplaces the part in Program Mode. If CRA:1 is 0, then a 1 in this bit places the part in Data Mode.

CRA:1 Mixed Mode. If this bit is a 0, then the operating mode is determined by CRA:0. If this bit is a 1, then thepart operates in Mixed Mode.

CRA:2 Reserved. This bit is reserved and should be programmed to 0 to ensure correct operation.

CRA:3 SPORT Loop Back. This is a diagnostic mode. This bit should be set to 0 to ensure correct operation.

CRA:4–6 Device Count Bits. These bits tell the AD73360 how many devices are used in a cascade. All devices in thecascade should be programmed to the same value ensure correct operation. See Table XVIII.

CRA:7 Reset. Writing a 1 to this bit will initiate a software reset of the AD73360.

Control Register B

CRB:0–1 Decimation Rate. These bits are used to set the decimation of the AD73360. See Table VII.

CRB:2–3 Serial Clock Divider. These bits are used to set the serial clock frequency. See Table VI.

Control Register C

CRC:0 Global Power-Up. Writing a 1 to this bit will cause all six channels of the AD73360 to power-up regardless of thestatus of the Power Control Bits in CRD-CRF. If less than six channels are required, this bit should be set to 0 andthe Power Control Bits of the relevant channels should be set to 1.

CRC:1–4 Reserved. These bits are reserved and should be programmed to 0 to ensure correct operation.

CRC:5 Power-Up Reference. This bit controls the state of the on-chip reference. A 1 in this bit will power up the refer-ence. A 0 in this bit will power-down the reference. Note that the reference is automatically powered up if anychannel is enabled.

CRG:7 Single-Ended Enable Mode. Setting this bit to a 1 will enable Single-Ended Mode on any channel whose ChannelSelect bit (CRG:0–5) is set to 1. Setting this bit to 0 will select Differentially-Ended Input Mode for all channels.

CRH:0–5 Invert Select. These bits are used in association with CRH:7. If the Enable Invert Channel Mode bit (CRH:7) is 1,then a 1 in a Channel Select bit location will put that channel into Inverted Mode. Master Clock DividerThe AD73360 features a programmable master clock dividerthat allows the user to reduce an externally available masterclock, at pin MCLK, by one of the ratios 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 to pro-duce an internal master clock signal (DMCLK) that is used tocalculate the sampling and serial clock rates. The master clockdivider is programmable by setting CRB:4-6. Table XV showsthe division ratio corresponding to the various bit settings. Thedefault divider ratio is divide-by-one.

Serial Clock Rate DividerThe AD73360 features a programmable serial clock divider thatallows users to match the serial clock (SCLK) rate of the data tothat of the DSP engine or host processor. The maximum SCLKrate available is DMCLK and the other available rates are:DMCLK/2, DMCLK/4 and DMCLK/8. The slowest rate(DMCLK/8) is the default SCLK rate. OPERATIONGeneral DescriptionThe AD73360 inputs and outputs data in a Time DivisionMultiplexing (TDM) format. When data is being read from theAD73360 each channel has a fixed time slot in which its data istransmitted. If a channel is not powered up, no data is transmit-ted during the allocated time slot and the SDO line will bethree-stated. When the AD73360 is first powered up or reset itwill be set to Program Mode and will output an SDOFS. After areset the SDOFS will be asserted once every sample period(125 µs assuming 16.384 MHz master clock). If the AD73360 isconfigured in Frame Sync Loop-Back Mode, one control wordcan be transmitted after each SDOFS pulse. Figure 10a showsthe SDO and SDOFS lines after a reset. The serial data sent bySDO will not contain valid ADC data until the AD73360 is putinto Data Mode or Mixed Mode. Control Registers D throughF allow channels to be powered up individually. This givesgreater flexibility and control over power consumption. Figure10b shows the SDOFS and SDO of the AD73360 when allchannels are powered up and Figure 10c shows SDOFS andSDO with channels 1, 3 and 5 powered up.

Resetting the AD73360The RESET pin resets all the control registers. All registers arereset to zero indicating that the default SCLK rate (DMCLK/8)and sample rate (DMCLK/2048) are at a minimum to ensurethat slow speed DSP engines can communicate effectively. Aswell as resetting the control registers using the RESET pin, thedevice can be reset using the RESET bit (CRA:7) in ControlRegister A. Both hardware and software resets require fourDMCLK cycles. On reset, DATA/PGM (CRA:0) is set to 0(default condition) thus enabling Program Mode. The resetconditions ensure that the device must be programmed to thecorrect settings after power-up or reset. Following a reset, theSDOFS will be asserted approximately 2070 master (MCLK)cycles after RESET goes high. The data that is output followingthe reset and during Program Mode is random and contains novalid information until either data or mixed mode is set.

Power ManagementThe individual functional blocks of the AD73360 can be en-abled separately by programming the power control registerCRC. It allows certain sections to be powered down if not re-quired, which adds to the device’s flexibility in that the userneed not incur the penalty of having to provide power for acertain section if it is not necessary to their design. The powercontrol registers provide individual control settings for the majorfunctional blocks on each analog front end unit and also a globaloverride that allows all sections to be powered up/down bysetting/clearing the bit. Using this method the user could, forexample, individually enable a certain section, such as the refer-ence (CRC:5), and disable all others. The global power-up(CRC:0) can be used to enable all sections but if power-down isrequired using the global control, the reference will still be en-abled; in this case, because its individual bit is set. Refer toTable XII for details of the settings of CRC. CRD–CRF can beused to control the power status of individual channels allowingmultiple channels to be powered down if required.

Operating ModesThere are three operating modes available on the AD73360.They are Program, Data and Mixed Program/Data. The deviceconfiguration—register settings—can be changed only in Pro-gram and Mixed Program/Data Modes. In all modes, transfersof information to or from the device occur in 16-bit packets,therefore the DSP engine’s SPORT will be programmed for 16-bit transfers.

Program (Control) ModeIn Program Mode, CRA:0 = 0, the user writes to the controlregisters to set up the device for desired operation—SPORToperation, cascade length, power management, input/outputgain, etc. In this mode, the 16-bit information packet sent to thedevice by the DSP engine is interpreted as a control word whoseformat is shown in Table VI. In this mode, the user must ad-dress the device to be programmed using the address field of thecontrol word. This field is read by the device and if it is zero(000 bin), the device recognizes the word as being addressed to it.If the address field is not zero, it is then decremented and the

control word is passed out of the device—either to the nextdevice in a cascade or back to the DSP engine. This 3-bit ad-dress format allows the user to uniquely address any one of upto eight devices in a cascade. If the AD73360 is used in a stand-alone configuration connected to a DSP, the device addresscorresponds to 0. If, on the other hand, the AD73360 is config-ured in a cascade of multiple devices, its device address corre-sponds with its hardwired position in the cascade.

Following reset, when the SE pin is enabled, the AD73360responds by raising the SDOFS pin to indicate that an outputsample event has occurred. Control words can be written to thedevice to coincide with the data being sent out of the SPORT, asshown in Figure 12 (Directly Coupled), or they can lag the out-put words by a time interval that should not exceed the sampleinterval (Indirectly Coupled). Refer to the Digital Interfacesection for more information. After reset, output frame syncpulses will occur at a slower default sample rate, which is DM-CLK/2048, until Control Register B is programmed, after whichthe SDOFS will be pulsed at the selected rate. This is to allowslow controller devices to establish communication with theAD73360. During Program Mode, the data output by the de-vice is random and should not be interpreted as ADC data.

Data ModeOnce the device has been configured by programming the cor-rect settings to the various control registers, the device may exitProgram Mode and enter Data Mode. This is done by program-ming the DATA/PGM (CRA:0) bit to a 1 and MM (CRA:1) to0. Once the device is in Data Mode, the input data is ignored.When the device is in normal Data Mode (i.e., mixed modedisabled), it must receive a hardware reset to reprogram any ofthe control register settings.

Appendix C details the initialization and operation of an analogfront end cascade in normal Data Mode.

Mixed Program/Data ModeThis mode allows the user to send control words to the devicewhile receiving ADC words. This permits adaptive control ofthe device whereby control of the input gains can be affected byreprogramming the control registers. The standard data frameremains 16 bits, but now the MSB is used as a flag bit to indi-cate that the remaining 15 bits of the frame represents controlinformation. Mixed mode is enabled by setting the MM bit(CRA:1) to 1 and the DATA/PGM bit (CRA:0) to 1. In thecase where control setting changes will be required during nor-mal operation, this mode allows the ability to load control infor-mation with the slight inconvenience of formatting the data.Note that the output samples from the ADC will also have theMSB set to zero to indicate it is a data word.

A description of a single device operating in mixed mode isdetailed in Appendix B, while Appendix D details the initializa-tion and operation of an analog front end cascade operating inmixed mode. Note that it is not essential to load the controlregisters in Program Mode before setting mixed mode active.Mixed mode may be selected with the first write by program-ming CRA and then transmitting other control words.

INTERFACINGThe AD73360 can be interfaced to most modern DSP enginesusing conventional serial port connections and an extra enablecontrol line. Both serial input and output data use an accompa-nying frame synchronization signal which is active high oneclock cycle before the start of the 16-bit word or during the lastbit of the previous word if transmission is continuous. The serialclock (SCLK) is an output from the AD73360 and is used todefine the serial transfer rate to the DSP’s Tx and Rx ports.Two primary configurations can be used: the first is shown inFigure 11 where the DSP’s Tx data, Tx frame sync, Rx data andRx frame sync are connected to the AD73360’s SDI, SDIFS,SDO and SDOFS respectively. This configuration, referred toas indirectly coupled or nonframe sync loop-back, has the effectof decoupling the transmission of input data from the receipt ofoutput data. When programming the DSP serial port for thisconfiguration, it is necessary to set the Rx frame sync as aninput to the DSP and the Tx frame sync as an output generatedby the DSP. This configuration is most useful when operating inmixed mode, as the DSP has the ability to decide how manywords can be sent to the AD73360(s). This means that full con-trol can be implemented over the device configuration in a givensample interval. The second configuration (shown in Figure 12)has the DSP’s Tx data and Rx data connected to the AD73360’sSDI and SDO, respectively, while the DSP’s Tx and Rx framesyncs are connected to the AD73360’s SDIFS and SDOFS. Inthis configuration, referred to as directly coupled or frame syncloop-back, the frame sync signals are connected together andthe input data to the AD73360 is forced to be synchronous withthe output data from the AD73360. The DSP must be pro-grammed so that both the Tx and Rx frame syncs are inputs asthe AD73360’s SDOFS will be input to both. This configura-tion guarantees that input and output events occur simulta-neously and is the simplest configuration for operation in normalData Mode. Note that when programming the DSP in thisconfiguration it is advisable to preload the Tx register with thefirst control word to be sent before the AD73360 is taken out ofreset. This ensures that this word will be transmitted to coincidewith the first output word from the device(s).

Digital InterfacingThe AD73360 is designed to easily interface to most commonDSPs. The SCLK, SDO, SDOFS, SDI and SDIFS must beconnected to the SCLK, DR, RFS, DT and TFS pins of theDSP respectively. The SE pin may be controlled from a paralleloutput pin or flag pin such as FL0–2 on the ADSP-21xx (or XFon the TMS320C5x) or, where SPORT power-down is notrequired, it can be permanently strapped high using a suitablepull-up resistor. The RESET pin may be connected to the sys-tem hardware reset structure or it may also be controlled using adedicated control line. In the event of tying it to the globalsystem reset, it is necessary to operate the device in mixedmode, which allows a software reset, otherwise there is no con-venient way of resetting the device. Figures 11 and 12 showtypical connections to an ADSP-2181 while Figures 13 and 14show typical connections to an ADSP-21xx and a TMS320C5x,respectively.

Cascade OperationThe AD73360 has been designed to support up to eight devicesin a cascade connected to a single serial port (see Figure 17).The SPORT interface protocol has been designed so that deviceaddressing is built into the packet of information sent to thedevice. This allows the cascade to be formed with no extra hard-ware overhead for control signals or addressing. A cascade canbe formed in either of the two modes previously discussed.

When using the indirectly coupled frame sync configuration incascaded operation it is necessary to be aware of the restrictionsin sending control word data to all devices in the cascade. Theuser should ensure that there is sufficient time for all the controlwords to be sent between reading the last ADC sample and thestart of the next sample period.

In Cascade Mode, each device must know the number of de-vices in the cascade to be able to output data at the correcttime. Control Register A contains a 3-bit field (DC0–2) that isprogrammed by the DSP during the programming phase. Thedefault condition is that the field contains 000b, which is equiva-lent to a single device in cascade (see Table XVIII). However,for cascade operation this field must contain a binary value thatis one less than the number of devices in the cascade. With anumber of AD73360s in cascade each device takes a turn tosend an ADC result to the DSP. For example, in a cascade oftwo devices the data will be output as Device 2-Channel 1,Device 1-Channel 1, Device 2-Channel 2, Device 1-Channel 2etc. When the first device in the cascade has transmitted itschannel data there is an additional SCLK period during whichthe last device asserts its SDOFS as it begins its transmission ofthe next channel. This will not cause a problem for most DSPsas they count clock edges after a frame sync and hence theextra bit will be ignored.

When multiple devices are connected in cascade there are alsorestrictions concerning which ADC channels can be poweredup. In all cases the cascaded devices must all have the samechannels powered up (i.e., for a cascade of two devices requir-ing Channels 1 and 2 on Device 1 and Channel 5 on Device 2,Channels 1, 2 and 5 must be powered up on both devices toensure correct operation). Figure 18 shows the timing se-quence for two devices in cascade.

Connection of a cascade of devices to a DSP, as shown inFigure 17, is no more complicated than connecting a singledevice. Instead of connecting the SDO and SDOFS to theDSP’s Rx port, these are now daisy-chained to the SDI andSDIFS of the next device in the cascade. The SDO andSDOFS of the final device in the cascade are connected to theDSP’s Rx port to complete the cascade. SE and RESET on alldevices are fed from the signals that were synchronized withthe MCLK using the circuit of Figure 19. The SCLK fromonly one device need be connected to the DSP’s SCLK input(s)as all devices will be running at the same SCLK frequency andphase.

PERFORMANCEAs the AD73360 is designed to provide high performance, lowcost conversion, it is important to understand the means bywhich this high performance can be achieved in a typical appli-cation. This section will, by means of spectral graphs, outlinethe typical performance of the device and highlight some of theoptions available to users in achieving their desired sample rate,either directly in the device or by doing some post-processing inthe DSP, while also showing the advantages and disadvantagesof the different approaches.

Encoder SectionThe encoder section samples at DMCLK/256, which gives a64 kHz output rate for DMCLK equal to 16.384 MHz. Thenoise-shaping of the sigma-delta modulator also depends on thefrequency at which it is clocked, which means that the bestdynamic performance in a particular bandwidth is achieved byoversampling at the highest possible rate. If we assume that thesignals of interest are in the voice bandwidth of dc–4 kHz, thensampling at 64 kHz gives a spectral response which ensuresgood SNR performance in the voice bandwidth, as shown inFigure 20.

The sampling rate can be varied by programming the DecimationRate Divider settings in CRB. For a DMCLK of 16.384 MHzsample rates of 64 kHz, 32 kHz, 16 kHz and 8 kHz are available.Figure 21 shows the final spectral response of a signal sampledat 8 kHz using the maximum oversampling rate.

It is possible to generate lower sample rates through reducingthe oversampling ratio by programming the DMCLK RateDivider Settings in CRB (MCD2-MCD1) This will have theeffect of spreading the quantization noise over a lesser band-width resulting in a degradation of dynamic performance.Figure 22 shows a FFT plot of a signal sampled at 8 kHz rateproduced by reducing the DMCLK Rate.

Encoder Group DelayThe AD73360 implementation offers a very low level of groupdelay, which is given by the following relationship:

Group Delay (Decimator) = Order × ((M–1)/2) × Tdec

where:

Order is the order of the decimator (= 3),

M is the decimation factor (= 32) and

Tdec is the decimation sample interval (= 1/2.048e6)

=> Group Delay (Decimator) = 3 × (32–1)/2 × (1/2.048e6)= 22.7 µs

If final filtering is implemented in the DSP, the final filter’sgroup delay must be taken into account when calculating overallgroup delay.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONSAnalog InputsThe AD73360 features six signal conditioning inputs. Eachsignal conditioning block allows the AD73360 to be used witheither a single-ended or differential signal. The applied signalcan also be inverted internally by the AD73360 if required. Theanalog input signal to the AD73360 can be dc-coupled, pro-vided that the dc bias level of the input signal is the same as theinternal reference level (REFOUT). Figure 24 shows the recom-mended differential input circuit for the AD73360. The circuitof Figure 24 implements first-order low-pass filters with a 3 dB

point at 34 kHz; these are the only filters that must be imple-mented external to the AD73360 to prevent aliasing of thesampled signal. Since the ADC uses a highly oversampled ap-proach that transfers the bulk of the antialiasing filtering into thedigital domain, the off-chip antialiasing filter need only be of alow order. It is recommended that for optimum performance thecapacitors used for the antialiasing filter be of high quality di-electric (NPO).

The AD73360’s on-chip 38 dB preamplifier can be enabledwhen there is not enough gain in the input circuit; the preampli-fier is configured by bits IGS0–2 of CRD. The total gain mustbe configured to ensure that a full-scale input signal produces asignal level at the input to the sigma-delta modulator of theADC that does not exceed the maximum input range.

The dc biasing of the analog input signal is accomplished withan on-chip voltage reference. If the input signal is not biased atthe internal reference level (via REFOUT), then it must beac-coupled with external coupling capacitors. CIN should be0.1 µF or larger. The dc biasing of the input can then be accom-plished using resistors to REFOUT as in Figure 25.

Digital InterfaceAs there are a number of variations of sample rate and clockspeeds that can be used with the AD73360 in a particular appli-cation, it is important to select the best combination to achievethe desired performance. High speed serial clocks will read thedata from the AD73360 in a shorter time, giving more time forprocessing by at the expense of injecting some digital noise intothe circuit. Digital noise can also be reduced by connectingresistors (typ <50 Ω) in series with the digital input and outputlines. The noise can be minimized by good grounding and lay-out. Typically the best performance is achieved by selecting theslowest sample rate and SCLK frequency for the required appli-cation as this will produce the least amount of digital noise.Figure 28 shows combinations of sample rate and SCLK fre-quency which will allow data to be read from all six channels inone sample period. These figures correspond to setting DMCLK =MCLK.

Grounding and LayoutSince the analog inputs to the AD73360 are differential, most ofthe voltages in the analog modulator are common-mode volt-ages. The excellent common-mode rejection of the part willremove common-mode noise on these inputs. The analog anddigital supplies of the AD73360 are independent and separatelypinned out to minimize coupling between analog and digitalsections of the device. The digital filters on the encoder sectionwill provide rejection of broadband noise on the power supplies,except at integer multiples of the modulator sampling frequency.The digital filters also remove noise from the analog inputsprovided the noise source does not saturate the analog modula-tor. However, because the resolution of the AD73360’s ADC ishigh, and the noise levels from the AD73360 are so low, caremust be taken with regard to grounding and layout.

The printed circuit board that houses the AD73360 should bedesigned so the analog and digital sections are separated andconfined to certain sections of the board. The AD73360 pinconfiguration offers a major advantage in that its analog anddigital interfaces are connected on opposite sides of the package.This facilitates the use of ground planes that can be easily sepa-rated, as shown in Figure 29. A minimum etch technique isgenerally best for ground planes as it gives the best shielding.Digital and analog ground planes should be joined in only oneplace. If this connection is close to the device, it is recommendedto use a ferrite bead inductor as shown in Figure 29.

Avoid running digital lines under the device for they will couplenoise onto the die. The analog ground plane should be allowedto run under the AD73360 to avoid noise coupling. The powersupply lines to the AD73360 should use as large a trace as pos-sible to provide low impedance paths and reduce the effects ofglitches on the power supply lines. Fast switching signals such asclocks should be shielded with digital ground to avoid radiatingnoise to other sections of the board, and clock signals shouldnever be run near the analog inputs. Traces on opposite sides ofthe board should run at right angles to each other. This willreduce the effects of feedthrough through the board. A microstriptechnique is by far the best but is not always possible with adouble-sided board. In this technique, the component side ofthe board is dedicated to ground planes while signals are placedon the other side.

Good decoupling is important when using high speed devices.All analog and digital supplies should be decoupled to AGNDand DGND respectively, with 0.1 µF ceramic capacitors inparallel with 10 µF tantalum capacitors. To achieve the bestfrom these decoupling capacitors, they should be placed as closeas possible to the device, ideally right up against it. In systemswhere a common supply voltage is used to drive both the AVDDand DVDD of the AD73360, it is recommended that the system’sAVDD supply be used. This supply should have the recom-mended analog supply decoupling between the AVDD pins ofthe AD73360 and AGND and the recommended digital supplydecoupling capacitors between the DVDD pin and DGND.

DSP Programming ConsiderationsThis section discusses some aspects of how the serial port of theDSP should be configured and the implications of whether Rxand Tx interrupts should be enabled.

DSP SPORT ConfigurationFollowing are the key settings of the DSP SPORT required forthe successful operation with the AD73360:

• Configure for external SCLK.• Serial Word Length = 16 bits.• Transmit and Receive Frame Syncs required with every word.• Receive Frame Sync is an input to the DSP.• Transmit Frame Sync is an:

Input—in Frame Sync Loop-Back ModeOutput—in Nonframe Sync Loop-Back Mode.

• Frame Syncs occur one SCLK cycle before the MSB of theserial word.

• Frame Syncs are active high.

DSP SPORT InterruptsIf SPORT interrupts are enabled, it is important to note that theactive signals on the frame sync pins do not necessarily corre-spond with the positions in time of where SPORT interrupts aregenerated.

On ADSP-21xx processors, it is necessary to enable SPORTinterrupts and use Interrupt Service Routines (ISRs) to handleTx/Rx activity, while on the TMS320C5x processors it is pos-sible to poll the status of the Rx and Tx registers, which meansthat Rx/Tx activity can be monitored using a single ISR thatwould ideally be the Tx ISR as the Tx interrupt will typicallyoccur before the Rx ISR.

APPLICATIONS EXAMPLESVector Motor ControlThe current drawn by a motor can be split into two compo-nents: one produces torque and the other produces magneticflux. For optimal performance of the motor, these two compo-nents should be controlled independently. In conventionalmethods of controlling a three-phase motor, the current (orvoltage) supplied to the motor and the frequency of the drive arethe basic control variables. However, both the torque and fluxare functions of current (or voltage) and frequency. This cou-pling effect can reduce the performance of the motor because,for example, if the torque is increased by increasing the fre-quency, the flux tends to decrease.

Vector control of an ac motor involves controlling phase inaddition to drive and current frequency. Controlling the phaseof the motor requires feedback information on the position ofthe rotor relative to the rotating magnetic field in the motor.Using this information, a vector controller mathematically trans-forms the three-phase drive currents into separate torque andflux components. The AD73360, with its six-channel simulta-neous sampling capability, is ideally suited for use in vectormotor control applications.

A block diagram of a vector motor control application using theAD73360 is shown in Figure 30. The position of the field isderived by determining the current in each phase of the motor.VIN1, VIN2 and VIN3 of the AD73360 are used to digitize thisinformation.

Simultaneous sampling is critical to maintain the relative phaseinformation between the channels. A current-sensing isolationamplifier, transformer or Hall-effect sensor is used between themotor and the AD73360. Rotor information is obtained bymeasuring the voltage from the three inputs to the motor. VIN4,VIN5 and VIN6 of the AD73360 are used to obtain this informa-tion. A DSP microprocessor is used to perform the mathematicaltransformations and control loop calculations on the informa-tion fed back by the AD73360.

Industrial Power MeteringThe AD73360 can be used to measure the voltage and currentin all three phases of a three-phase supply. The simultaneoussampling architecture of the AD73360 is ideal for this applica-tion where simultaneous sampling is critical to maintaining therelative phase information between the three voltage and threecurrent phases. Figure 31 shows a block diagram of a three-phase metering system. The VIN1, VIN2 and VIN3 channels areused to measure the voltages in each phase (via voltage attenua-tors). The current flowing in each phase can be detected by theuse of current-sensing isolation amplifiers, transformers orHall-effect sensors. VIN4, VIN5 and VIN6 are used to digitizethis information. A DSP microprocessor is used to performthe mathematical calculations on the information provided bythe AD73360.

Programming a Single AD73360 for Data Mode OperationThis section describes a typical sequence in programming asingle AD73360 to operate in normal Data Mode. It details thecontrol (program) words that are sent to the device to configureits internal registers and shows the typical output data receivedduring both Program and Data Modes. The device is connectedin Frame Sync Loop-Back Mode (see Figure 13), which forcesan input word from the DSP’s Tx register each time the AD73360outputs a word via the SDO/SDOFS lines (while the AD73360is in Program Mode the data transmitted will be invalid ADCdata and will, in fact, be a modified version of the last controlword written in by the DSP). In each case the DSP’s Tx registeris preloaded with the data before the frame pulse is received. InStep 1, the part has just been reset and on the first output eventthe AD73360 presents an invalid output word1. The DSP’s Txregister contains a control word that programs CRB with thedata byte 0x03. This sets the sample rate at 8 kHz (with a

master clock of 16.384 MHz). In Step 2, the control word inthe DSP’s Tx register will cause all the AD73360s channels topower up. This data is received by the AD73360 with the nextframe sync pulse. An invalid ADC word is also received at theDSP’s Rx register. Step 3 selects the settings for each channelof the AD73360. This set can be repeated as necessary to pro-gram all the channels to the desired settings. Steps 4 and 5program the modes of each channel (i.e., single-ended or differ-ential mode and normal or inverted). Step 6 puts the AD73360into Data Mode and in Step 7 the first valid ADC word isreceived.

APPENDIX B

Programming a Single AD73360 for Mixed Mode OperationThis section describes a typical sequence in programming asingle AD73360 to operate in Mixed Mode. The device is con-figured in Nonframe Sync Loop-Back (see Figure 14), whichallows the DSP’s Tx Register to determine how many words aresent to the device during one sample interval. In NonframeSync Loop-Back mode care must be taken when writing to theAD73360 that an ADC result or register read result containedin the device’s serial register is not corrupted by a write. Thebest way to avoid this is to only write control words when theAD73360 has no more data to send. This can limit the numberof times a DSP can write to the AD73360 and is dependant onthe SCLK speed and the number of channels powered up. Inthis example it is assumed that there are only two channelspowered up and that there is adequate time to transmit dataafter the ADC results have been read.

In Step 1, the device has just been reset and the on first outputevent the AD73360 presents an invalid ADC sample word1.Once this word has been received the DSP can begin transmit-ting programming information to the AD73360. The first con-trol word sets the sampling rate at 8 kHz. In Step 2, the DSPinstructs the AD73360 to power up channels 1 and 2 and setsthe gain of each. No data is read from the AD73360 at thispoint. Steps 3 and 4 set the reference and places the part intoMixed Mode. In Steps 5 and 6 valid ADC results are read fromthe AD73360 and in Step 7 the DSP sends an instruction to theAD73360 to change the gain of Channel 1.

APPENDIX C

Configuring a Cascade of Two AD73360s to Operate inData ModeThis section describes a typical sequence of control words thatwould be sent to a cascade of two AD73360s to set them up foroperation. It is not intended to be a definitive initializationsequence, but will show users the typical input/output eventsthat occur in the programming and operation phases1. Thisdescription panel refers to Figure 34.

In Step 1, we have the first output sample event following de-vice reset. The SDOFS signal is raised on both devices simulta-neously, which prepares the DSP Rx register to accept the ADCword from Device 2, while SDOFS from Device 1 becomes anSDIFS to Device 2. As the SDOFS of Device 2 is coupled tothe DSP’s TFS and RFS, and to the SDIFS of Device 1, thisevent also forces a new control word to be output from the DSPTx register to Device 1. The control word loaded to Device 1 isaddressed to Device 2 (i.e., the address field is 001). Device 1will decrement the address field and pass it to Device 2 whenthe next frame sync arrives. As the DSP is transmitting a controlword, Device 2 is outputting an invalid ADC word. (Note thatthe AD73360 will not output valid ADC words until the deviceis placed in either mixed mode or data mode. Any ADC valuesreceived during the programming phase should be discarded.)At the same time, Device 1 will output its ADC result to Device2. Once all the data has been transferred, Device 1 will containan instruction for Device 2 (which instructs the part to set itsSCLK frequency), Device 2 will have received an ADC resultfrom Device 1 and the DSP will have received an ADC resultfrom Device 2.

In Step 2, Device 2 will begin transmitting the ADC word itreceived from Device 1. This will cause the DSP to transmit asecond command word, which tells Device 1 to change its serialclock. Simultaneously, Device 1 passes the first control word onto Device 2. In this manner both devices receive control wordinstructions and act upon them at the same time.

Step 3 is similar to Step 1 in that the DSP transmits a controlword for Device 2. Device 1 passes an invalid ADC result toDevice 2 and Device 2 transmits its own invalid ADC result tothe DSP.

In Step 4, Device 2 will transmit the invalid ADC sample itreceived from Device 1 while receiving a control word fromDevice 1 at the same time. Device 2 transmitting will cause theDSP to transmit a control word for Device 1. This should besimilar to the control word transmitted in step 3 except that thisword is intended for Device 1. When transmission is completeboth devices have received instructions to power up all channelsand set the reference etc. Steps 3 and 4 can be repeated, asnecessary, to program other registers concerned with the analogsection.

Step N is the first stage of changing the operating modes of thedevices to Data Mode. As Device 2 outputs an ADC word theDSP will transmit a control word intended for CRA of Device 2to Device 1. As in Step 1, Device 1 will decrement the addressfield and pass on the control word on the next frame sync.

In Step N + 1, Device 2 transmits an ADC word it receivedfrom Device 1. This causes the DSP to transmit a control wordto Device 1 (intended for its CRA register). At the same timeDevice 2 is receiving its control word from Device 1. Both de-vices simultaneously receive commands to change from ProgramMode to Data Mode and the number of devices in the cascade isalso programmed here.

In Step N + 2, we begin to receive valid ADC data. Note thatthe data comes from the last device in the chain (Device 2) first.As Device 2 transmits its ADC data it is receiving ADC datafrom Device 1. Any data transmitted from the DSP will be ig-nored from now on.

In Step N + 3, Device 2 has received an ADC sample fromDevice 1 and transmits it to the DSP. Steps N + 2 and N + 3are repeated as long as samples are required.

NOTE1This sequence assumes that the DSP SPORT’s Rx and Tx interrupts areenabled. It is important to ensure that there is no latency (separation) betweencontrol words in a cascade configuration. This is especially the case whenprogramming Control Register B as it contains settings for SCLK and DMCLKrates.

Configuring a Cascade of Two AD73360s to Operate in MixedModeThis section describes a typical sequence of control words thatwould be sent to a cascade of two AD73360s to configure themfor operation in Mixed Mode. It is not intended to be a defini-tive initialization sequence, but will show users the typical input/output events that occur in the programming and operationphases1. This description panel refers to Figure 35.

In Step 1, we have the first output sample event following devicereset. The SDOFS signal is raised on both devices simulta-neously, which prepares the DSP Rx register to accept the ADCword from Device 2 while SDOFS from Device 1 becomes anSDIFS to Device 2. The cascade is configured as nonFSLB,which means that the DSP has control over what is transmittedto the cascade. The DSP will receive an invalid ADC word fromDevice 2 and simultaneously Device 2 is receiving an invalidADC word from Device 1. As both AD73360s are in ProgramMode there is only one output event per sample period. TheDSP can now send a control word to the AD73360s.

In Step 2, the DSP has finished transmitting the control word toDevice 1. Device 1 recognizes that this word is not intended forit so it will decrement the address field and generate and SDOFSand proceed to transmit the control word to the next device inthe chain. At this point the DSP should transmit a control wordfor Device 1. This will ensure that both devices receive, and actupon, the control words at the same time.

Step 3 shows completion of the first series of control word writes.The DSP has now received an ADC word from Device 2 andeach device has received a control word that addresses ControlRegister B and sets the SCLK and Sample Rate. When pro-gramming a cascade of AD73360s in NonFSLB it is importantto ensure that control words which affect the operation of theserial port are received by all devices simultaneously.

In Step 4, another sample interval has occurred and theSDOFS on both devices are raised. Device 2 sends an ADCresult to the DSP and Device 1 sends an ADC result to Device2. The remaining time before the next sample interval can beused to program more registers in the AD73360s. Care must betaken that the subsequent writes do not overlap the next sampleinterval to avoid corrupting the data. The control words arewritten as Device 2, Device 1, Device 2, etc.

Step 5 shows the DSP starting to program the ADC ControlRegister to select channel gains, operating modes etc. In thiscase the first write operation programs Control Register D topower up ADC channels 1 and 2 with gains of 0 dBs. This stepcan be repeated until all the registers have been programmed.The devices should be programmed in the order Device 2,Device 1, Device 2, etc.

In Step 6, the DSP transmits a control word for Device 2. Thiscontrol word set the Device count to 2 and instructs the AD73360to go into Mixed Mode. When Device 1 receives this controlword it will decrement the address field and generate an SDOFSto pass it on to Device 2.

In Step 7, the DSP transmits a control word for Device 1. Thisshould happen as Device 1 is transmitting the control word forDevice 2 to ensure that both device change into Mixed Mode atthe same time.

In Step 8, we begin receiving the first valid ADC words fromthe cascade.

It is assumed that there is sufficient time to transmit all therequired Control Words in the allotted time.
