OUR MISSIONThe Queens Library Adult Learner Program is committed to providing lifelong learning opportunities to address the needs of the diverse and changing populations of Queens through free quality educational programs and services that incorporate digital literacy, blended learning, and individualized case management services.

All programs, classes, services and resources offered by Queens Library Adult Learner Program are FREE with a Queens Library card.

ADULT BASIC EDUCATION (ABE)The ALCs provides “Learn to Read” programs and classes for beginning to mid-level adult readers, offered approximately 3 hours per class twice a week. Evening, daytime, and weekend schedules are available. Our ABE classes emphasize basic skills such as reading and writing, as well as English language competency and problem-solving. Our ABE curriculum reflects a philosophy that adults can and want to learn, that they are able and willing to take responsibility for that learning, and that the learning itself should respond to their needs. Thus, our classes are self-directed, delves into the rich source of experiences of our students, and problem-centered rather than subject centered.

PRE-HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY DIPLOMA (PRE-HSE)The ALCs provides Pre-HSE classes for adults who speak English and want to improve their reading and math skills in preparation for their HSE exam. Classes meet two days per week for a total of 6 hours. Evening, daytime, and weekend schedules are available. Our highly qualified instructors will review and focus on the major subject areas of the test encompassing Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Reading and Writing and provide in-class training for test-taking and time management strategies. Free Math tutoring are also available at selected days and times.

YOUNG ADULT LITERACY PROGRAM (YALP)There are three Young Adult Literacy Programs sites, with highly qualified professional staff and volunteers, who provide educational assistance to young adults 17-24 years of age. YALP provides a wide array of instructional, vocational, recreational, family support, and social services. Program activities include: Literacy instruction (10 hours per week); Math instruction (5 hours per week); Case Management (5 hours per week); ITTS Boot Camp - digital literacy practice for TABE Success (every other Saturday); and Service Learning and Internship/Job Shadowing program. ACADEMIC SUPPORT Staff will encourage strong academic performance, through support and encouragement, direct services or referral to appropriate services. All young adult participants are encouraged to consider higher education as a desirable follow-up to high school graduation.

COLLEGE AND CAREER ACCESSAll young people should feel optimistic and prepared for the future they envision for themselves. For some young people that is college or trade school, while others it is careers or the military. Staff will work with young people to plan for their chosen future, and ensure they have the resources and skills to be successful in that choice.

TWO PATHWAYS TO OBTAIN YOUR HSE DIPLOMAQueens Library Adult Learner Program provides two pathways to obtaining your High School Equivalency diploma!

Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) (formerly the GED)

The TASC is a High School Equivalency (HSE) national examination developed by CTB/McGraw Hill and is jointly administered by CTB McGraw Hill/DRC and the New York State Education Department. The test is available to adults who did not graduate from high school or whose diplomas may not be recognized by New York State. Queens Library offers the TASC exam in computer based in English and Spanish. National External Diploma Program (NEDP)

The National External Diploma Program is an applied performance assessment system that uses the high school level skills of adults and out of school youth. The NEDP evaluates the reading, writing, math, and workforce readiness skills of participants in life and work contexts. The web-based program for adults and out of school youth offers flexibility to earn your diploma even if you are employed full-time, enrolled in job training, or have other commitments. Clients will work through online activities and with an advisor to complete the three-six months program.
