INTRODUCTION• Suratgarh thermal power station is the first

super thermal plant of Rajasthan.

• It has installed capacity of 1500 MW, which is highest in the state.

• The power plant has 6 units of 250MW each.

BOILER• Also termed as ‘steam generator’

• Water is evaporated in to steam by application of heat.

• Heat source is coal

Page 7: A SEMINAR PRESENTATION ON SURATGARH SUPER THERMAL POWER STATION

BOILER

• Then superheated steam is fed into super heaters to completely remove water particles.• Finally fed to turbine.

TURBINE• Turbine, the rotary engine that converts the energy

of a moving stream of fluid into mechanical energy.

Page 9: A SEMINAR PRESENTATION ON SURATGARH SUPER THERMAL POWER STATION

TURBINE• The basic element in a turbine is a wheel or a

rotor.

• There are three turbines HP, IP, LP operated at 3000 rpm with initial parameters 13 kg/cm2.

• This mechanical energy is transferred through a drive shaft to operate a generator to produce electricity.

DEAERATORS

Used for the removal of air & other dissolved gases from the feed water to steam generating boilers.

HEAT EXCHANGERSHeat exchangers are equipment that transfers heat

from one medium to another.Heat exchanger performance can deteriorate with

time, off design operations and other interferences such as fouling, scaling etc.

CONDENSER• To convert exhaust steam to water for reuse thus

saving on feed water requirement.

Page 13: A SEMINAR PRESENTATION ON SURATGARH SUPER THERMAL POWER STATION

SUPER HEATERS• Super heaters are meant to raise the temperature

of the steam.• It eliminates the formulation of condensate during

transporting of steam in pipe lines, which is harmful for turbine blades.

AIR PRE-HEATER• The air before being supplied to the boiler passes through pre-heater where the flue gases heat it. • The pre-heating of primary air causes improved and intensified combustion of coal.

FEED WATER HEATERThe feed water heating equipment raises the

temperature of the water by utilizing extraction steam from various stages of the turbine.

WATER TREATMENT PLANT

• The principle problem in high-pressure boiler is to control corrosion and steam quality.

• Impurities in steam also form deposit over turbine blades and nozzles.

• The impurities present in water are as follows:-

Un-dissolved and suspended impurities.Dissolved salts and minerals.

COAL HANDLING PLANT• The Heart of Super Thermal Power Plant because it

provides the main fuel for combustion in boiler. • There are 14 tracks in all for transportation of coal

through rails.• The coal is firstly unloaded from wagon by wagon

Tripler then crushed by crushers and magnetic pulley and pulverized to be transformed to the boiler.

• The whole transportation of coal is through conveyor belt operated by 3- Induction Motor.

Page 18: A SEMINAR PRESENTATION ON SURATGARH SUPER THERMAL POWER STATION

The coal handling plant can be broadly divided in three sections:• Wagon Unloading System• Crushing System• Conveying System

ASH HANDLING PLANTThis plant can be divided into three

sub-plants as follows :-• Fuel and Ash Plant• Air and Gas Plant• Ash Disposal and Dust Collection

Plant

Page 20: A SEMINAR PRESENTATION ON SURATGARH SUPER THERMAL POWER STATION

1) Fuel and Ash Plant: • Coal is used as combustion material in SSTPS.• Ash Handling Plant at SSTPS consists of specially

designed bottom ash and fly ash in electro-static precipitator economizer and pre-heaters hopper.

2) Air and Gas Plant :• Air from atmosphere is supplied to combustion

chamber of boiler through the action of forced draft fan.• The air before being supplied to the boiler passes

through pre-heater where the flue gases heat it.

3)Ash Disposal and Dust Collection Plant:• SSTPS has dry bottom furnace. • Ash Handling Plant consist of especially designed

bottom and fly ash system for two-path boiler. • The system for both units is identical.

CONTROL & INSTRUMENTATION (C & I) DEPARTMENT

• This department is the Brain of the plant.• Because from the relays to transmitters followed by

the electronic computation chipsets and recorders and lastly the controlling circuitry, all fall under .

1. MANOMETRY LABa) TRANSMITTER• Used for pressure measurements of gases and liquids.• Working Principle- The input pressure is converted

into electrostatic capacitance.• It can be mounted on a pipe or a wall.

Page 23: A SEMINAR PRESENTATION ON SURATGARH SUPER THERMAL POWER STATION

www.engineersportal.in

• For liquid or steam measurement transmitters is mounted below main process piping and for gas measurement transmitter is placed above pipe.

b) MANOMETER• ‘U’ shaped bent tube, filled with a liquid.• Measures difference in pressure across the two

limbs.c) BOURDEN PRESSURE GAUGE• Oval section tube, its one end is fixed.• It is provided with a pointer to indicate the pressure

on a calibrated scale. It is of 2 types: i. Spiral type: for Low pressure measurement.ii. Helical Type: for High pressure measurement

2. PYROMETER LABa) GLASS THERMOMETER: Mercury in the glass thermometer boils at 340º C which

limits the range of temperature that can be measured. b) ULTRA VIOLET CENSOR : This device is used in furnace and it measures the

intensity of ultra violet rays there which directly indicates the temperature in the furnace.

c) THERMOCOUPLES: Based on SEEBACK and PELTIER effect. It comprises of

two junctions at different temperature. This is an important part in the plant.

3.FURNACE SAFETY AND SUPERVISORY SYSTEM LAB

• This lab has the responsibility of starting fire in the furnace to enable the burning of coal.

• The furnace has six feeder mills each separated by warm air pipes fed from forced draft fans.

CONCLUSION• The first phase of practical training has proved to be

fruitful.

• It provides an opportunity to encounter with such huge machines like Wagon Tripler, 250MW Turbines and Generators.

• It also provides an opportunity to learn how the technology is used at proper place.
