Foreword by the Head of the Department
On behalf of the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, I
welcome you all to get yourself acquainted with our News Letter, COMMET. In
recent times, as the Department has been recognized for its progressive and fruitful
interaction with Industry, R&D sectors, and Academia at National and
International Levels, it has been thought of publicizing the creditable achievements
within the Institute and among other Institutions that undertake the programme on
Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Technology. This semsterely News Letter
would critically bring out the activities taken up by the Department during the
Semester viz., Organization of National Level Technical Symposia, Invited
Lectures, Faculty contributions, Students’ Academic, Cocurricular, Extracurricular
achievements, and Department-Industry-Academia interaction; which have the
strongest accordance with the Vision and Mission of the Department, and
Educational Objectives, Outcomes of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering
Programme. I also take this opportunity to thank the Management, Administration,
and whoever have supported directly and indirectly in these achievements.
Looking forward to your valuable and encouraging feedback in order to facilitate
bringing out better and more effective issues in the days to come………………….

Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs)
I. In pursuit of Excellence in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering
In line with the Mission of our Institute and Department, Educational Objective of our
Programme is to prepare quality Metallurgical and Materials Engineering
Professionals through a well-balanced instruction programme coupled with exposure
to National laboratories and Industries and by providing opportunities for personality
development. Thus, the overall objective is to meet the professional requirements of
the ever-growing demand for metals and materials.
II. Fulfilling the long term Needs of the students – the primary Stakeholders
Providing a platform to the undergraduate students to interact with scientists and
engineers of national and international repute by deputing them to industrial and
R&D centers of excellence for carrying out their Project work; organizing Visits and
Tours and conducting national and international technical conferences;
recommending the students to pursue higher education in National and International
reputed Universities.
III. Outreaching the prospective Employers
In order to meet the requirements of the employers, the Programme imparts
leadership qualities, effective communication skills, positive approach and ability to
work in teams among the students. The Programme also encourages the students to
develop professional ethics and continuous learning through participation in
appropriate training activities, short courses, and conferences.
IV. Creating Environment for Independent and Continuous Learning
Creating environment for independent and continuous Learning by arranging for
expert lectures, encouraging students to deliver short talks, and to write independent
assignments for each and every subject and, also, by deputing students to national and
international conferences.
Programme Outcomes (POs):

I. Organizational Excellence of the Department
PMSC-2012
The Department has organized a 4-day Short Course on Powder Metallurgy during December
19-22, 2012 at MGIT in association with the Powder Metallurgy Association of India, Mumbai
under the Directorship of Professor T R Ramamohan, IIT Mumbai and convenorship of
Professor J Viplava Kumar, MGIT. This four day Workshop was attended by more than 130
delegates from various Industries, Research Organizations, Academic Institutions, National
Laboratories and Defence establishments. The Programme also had delegates from Russia and
China as well to impart International flavor to the Event. It has been reported by PMAI that this
is the largest Short Term Course conducted ever by them. The Programme was sponsored by
highly reputed and esteemed organizations from Governmental and Nongovernmental sectors
across the Country.

program. as the Chief Guest. Dr. K. Bhanu Sankara Rao, School of Engineering, Science &
Technology, University of Hyderabad was the Guest of Honour along with Chief Patron Sri D.
Kamalakar Reddy (Secretary & Correspondent, Chaitanya Bharathi Educational Society, CBES).

The Short Course covered all the important areas of Powder Metallurgy and particulate materials
technology such as applications of PM components in our everyday life, powder production,
characterization, consolidation techniques, sintering theory, furnaces and atmospheres, post
sintering operations, ceramics and composite processing and advanced materials for demanding
applications, processing and technologies etc. Excellent lectures were also supported by various
videos, animations and documentaries. To commemorate the Event, a Souvenir was also
released.
The faculty and speakers included the leading experts from the field of Powder Metallurgy
Technology across the globe. There was a Cultural Evening on 21st December with scintillating
performances of Bharata Natyam by Kumari I. Ambika and Kumari Tejaswini Manogna, which
were appreciated by one and all.

Dr. G. Malakondaiah, Distinguished Scientist and Director, DMRL, Hyderabad has been the
Chief Guest for the Valedictory Program on December 22, 2012. Professor T. Srinivasa Rao,
Director, NIT, Warangal, and Sri G. Jagannadham, Former Director, GIKIL, Bosnia-
Herzegovina addressed the gathering. The Short Course was concluded with Guru Pooja amid
Vedic Chants.

PRESS MEET
To popularize the discipline of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering among the public, and
so to make the discipline the most sought after, the Department has held a Press Meet on
December 24, 2012 at the Golconda Hotel, Masab Tank. Professor K Bhanu Sankara Rao, Chair
Professor, University of Hyderabad from Academia, Dr. N. Eswara Prasad, Regional Director,
RCMA from Research and Development; Sri B. Ramamurthy, BR Consulutancy Services, and
Sri G. Jagannadham, Former Director, GIKIL, Bosnia-Herzegovina from Industry Sector have
made their presence felt and interacted with the Reporters from National and Statewide media.

GUEST LECTURE
The Indian Institute of Metals Student Affiliate Chapter, MGIT and Department of Metallurgical
and Materials Engineering, MGIT have organized an Invited Talk on Mechanical Behaviour of
Titanium Alloys in the Institute Auditorium. Professor Ankem Sreeramamurty, ASM Fellow,
Professor, University of Maryland, USA has delivered the Talk. Professor K Bhanu Sankara
Rao, University of Hyderabad and Member, National Executive Committee, and Chief Editor,
IIM Transactions has addressed the audience and explained the Research and Publication
activities being taken by the Indian Institute of Metals. Dr. N. Eswara Prasad, Regional Director,
RCMA (Materials), and Vice-President, IIM (Hyderabad Chapter) informed the audience about
the IIM Hyderabad Chapter. Dr. G. Chandra Mohan Reddy, Principal, MGIT has summarized
the Lecture. Some of the Students of the Department and Faculty Members who are currently
working in the field of Mechanical Behaviour of Titanium Alloys have interacted with the
Speakers and got clarifications. The Program was concluded by Mr. Manikanta (IV/IV MME)
through proposing Vote of Thanks to all the Invitees and Dignitaries.
METALLON 2013
The Department has organized a 2-day National Level Students’ Technical Event, Metallon 2013
during March 8-9, 2013 as a part of Technocultural Event of the Institute NIRVANA ’13. This
Event has witnessed substantial student participation from other reputed Institutes
II. Faculty Members’ participation in Symposia at other Institutes/Professional Societies:
Mrs. J, Jhansi, and Mr. PVS Lakshmi Narayana have attended a 2-day National Conference on
Evaluation and Prevention of Corrosion Failures (EPCF-2012) organized by the School of
Engineering Sciences and Technology, University of Hyderabad during November 29-30, 2012.
Mr. RVSM. Ramakrishna and Mrs J. Jhansi have undergone a 3-week UGC sponsored Refresher
Course conducted by the Academic Staff College, JNTU Hyderabad during February 18, 2013-
March 09, 2013.
III. Achievements of the Department
III.1 Recognition of the Department by the Ministry of Steel, Government of India
It is a point of delight to submit that the Ministry of Steel, Government of India has chosen the
Department to institute Scholarships to the academically brilliant students of Metallurgical and
Materials Engineering for a period of two years. The Department has been the only one in the
state of Andhra Pradesh and among 18 Departments chosen by the Ministry across the Country.
The deserved students will be recommended by the Department basing on their academic
performance.
III. Faculty Achievements
III. 2 Invited Lectures delivered:
� Professor J. Viplava Kumar has delivered Talks on Physics involved in Powder
Compaction at the International Conference on Powder Metallurgy organized by the
Powder Metallurgy Association of India at Mumbai, and also at Nuclear Fuel Complex,
Hyderabad.
� Professor J. Viplava Kumar has delivered series of talks on Science behind Powder
Metallurgical Processes at the 3-week Refresher Course organized by the Academic Staff
College, JNTU Hyderabad.
III. 3 Technical Publications:
� A Technical Paper on Surface changes during Sintering authored by Professor J
Viplava Kumar has been presented at an International Conference held at Yokohama,
Japan
� A Technical Paper on influence of rolling path on microstructure and mechanical
properties of EB refined Tantalum authored by Sri P K Subramanian has been
published in Transactions of Indian Institute of Metals-October 2012-65 (5): P: 435-442
� A Technical Paper on Structure-Property Correlation of AA2014 Friction Stir Welds:
Role of Tool Pin Profile authored by Sri K. Ramanjaneyulu has been published in

III. 4 Mr. PVS Lakshmi Narayana has been appointed as the Member of Board of Studies,
JNTU Hyderabad.
IV Students’ Achievements
IV. 1 Academic Excellence:
� Ms. Lakshmi Sravani M (II/IV B. Tech. MME) has been the Best Performer of the
Institute amongst the other disciplines in the II/IV B. Tech. I Semester Examination
Results.
� Six Students of the Department from Final Year have secured Ranks in the National
Level Technical Examination GATE-2013 including Ms. A. Sahiti, the Best GATE
Ranker of the Institute. In this connection, the Department wishes to acknowledge the
support rendered by all the faculty members for their relentless effort in handling the
GATE Coaching Classes in the Institute for the Final Year Students of the Department.
IV. 2 Fellowships and Internships:
� Ms. Lakshmi Sravani M (II/IV MME) and Ms. Teena Mouni C. (III/IV MME) have
been awarded the T R Anantharaman Educational and Research Foundation (TRAERF)
Scholarship for the year 2012-2013.
� Ms. Aneesha, Mr. Bharath, and Mr. Rohith of III/IV MME have been selected for
Indian National Science Academy Fellowship for the academic year 2013-2014. They
would carry out their Mini Project Work at University of Hyderabad under this scheme.
� All the final year students have carried out their Main Project work at the most reputed
Organizations and come out with standard Reports.
IV. 3 Cocurricular achievements:
� Ms. K. Aswini (IV/IV MME) has secured I Prize for her presentation on Simulations of
Castings in the AYAS 2013, a National Level Technical Symposium conducted by
Metallurgical Engineering, JNTU Hyderabad.
IV. 4 Extracurricular Achievements:
� Ms. L. Vaishnavi (I/IV MME) has been selected for International Shuttle Badminton
Competition held at Turkey during March 2013.
� Ms. Sadanand Shourya (I/IV MME) has been selected for All India University
Competitions in Ball Badminton on behalf of JNTU Hyderabad.
V. Alumni Association
The Alumni Association of the Department has been going strong and contributing to the
progress of the Department at each and every possible count. During METALLON 2013, the
contributions from the Alumni Students amounted to Rs.50,000/-, which has been the highest
ever contribution made by the Alumni. This has helped the Department in organizing the Event
quite successfully and without any financial problems.
