This selection

This selection was made during 2002 to introduce Pashto poetry to a group of friends spread all over the world who were interested in Afghanistan. We communicated to Internet. I selected some of the poems I liked and proposed a first draft of translation. My other friends who knew English far better than I did, helped improving the translation.Poets selected here are among the shining stars of the modern Pashto poetry. Jahani, Karwan, Laeq, Malal, Pasarlay, Olfat and Sediqi belong to Afghanistan, Ajmal Khattak, Ghani, Gol, Sayel, Shahin and Taer are related to Pakistan.

Shishir Shah (from Mumbai, India), Riaz Hakeem (from Swat, Pakistan, Eleanor …. From …) contributed the most to this work. I have never met these friends but friendship transcends the distance. Shishir Shah has now gone. Last time I received news from Eli, she was fighting against a terrible illness. I don’t know if she could read these lines. Let these poems be the heralds of friendship amongst men and women of good will from all countries, all climates, all faiths, all beliefs and all colors.

WISHES

So many are the wishes in my heart How I pray your liquid eyes to fulfill them all

Each drop of my tears is a piece of my heartfilled with countless regrets

Ask not my mouth, ask rather my eyes, red with tearsFilled with a rainbow of prayerful longings

Waiting for a single smiling glance from a certain personI have books full of wishes

As provisions for this world and the next, O Khattak,I have burnt spots on my injured heart

WHO IS

When I go to see flowers in the gardenI stand lonely in the crowd of flowersI feel the devastation of my loneliness Who comes to my mind, if not you?

As flowers laugh in the beautiful dew and waves of breeze play in arms of the flowersmy heart longs to possess them Who comes to my mind, if not you?

When water rushes through the brooks of the gardenand the reflections of the red flowers swirl and spin A storm rises in my imagination Who comes to my mind, if not you?

When the moon above my head reaches the middle of the sky looking at me, it smiles and laughsmy heart recalls but one beautyWho comes to my mind, if not you?

DESTINY

I am soft mud in the hands of the potterI will become a wine cup, or a lowly ablution water-pot in a mosque A little lamp in a shrine, or a lantern in a wine shopor even a shard in the garbage.youth, vitality and life itself are the deeds of othersI have no force, no part in the decisiono pious man, tell me: in the garden of my friend which flower shall I consider dirty, which pure?how can I be accused of sinwhen power, destiny and decision belong to others?why should I regret laughing?others dream and others interpret the dreammy fault is this: I love flowers.I am not the master of the flower, nor the owner of the the glanceI have no control over glazed eyesover thirsty lips, or unconscious thoughtsI haven't put into the eyes of my belovedsprings, flowers, music, intoxication I have not made from my own lightmelody, movement, colors and springsIn the pale light of the dawnI have not put the magic

Spring came again bearing the messageOf flowers, colors and lightMy Saqi smiled and brought a full cupOf intoxication, youth and laughter

Morning came, dispelling a night Of darkness, fear and regretI saw a yellow flower in the duskIt brought regards from my beloved

this mind of mine will never accept That the creator of flowers also created hellHow will He enjoy my screamsThe One who created narcissus just for me

This green grass, these red flowers This enticing duskProve the love of my Saqiwith cups full of red wine

My Saqi's eyes are glazedThis drunkenness was made for meMy beloved has lovely eyesThis beauty was made for me

The moon, the stars, the joyful duskAre made to entertain my pains My Lord loves meTherefore the world is full of flowers

What is spring but the joy of my belovedas He spreads His light in each breath, each atomHe spreads his light onto the flowersHe spreads the colors of Mount Sinai into the breeze

As long as there is a show of colorsand ecstasy moves in man I will not admitThat there are fires in the next world

My friend has not made me for punishmentHe has made me for loveHe asks me for love, laughter and joywhether I am in a mosque or a temple of idols

spring returned, again bringing a messageOf colors, flowers and lightMy Saqi came back with the full cupOf joy, youth and laughter

Once again He presented, with His red fingersA cup full of pains to the FoolA cup full of life, separationand union, full of colors, full of dreams

The End

In every today I see remains of a yesterdayDo not speak to me of mornings and morrowsI have been deprived of free flightDo not explain life to a wounded bird like meBeware, do not cry for my false sighsBeware, believe not, my screams and my painFearing the hunter, I have left many a flockSpeak not to me of parting from friendsDo not pride yourself on your tricks, cheating and talismansI fell willingly in to the trap of destiny I have just emerged from the prison of reasonSpare me the tales of Plato's intellectSince i have chased away my heart's hopes for the futureDo not tell sweet stories about yesterdaysSeeing the seeds of the end in the beginning, I wept.Do not lament to me of time's passingDo not hope in the begging bowl of the skyThe Cup Bearer of eternity has placed your bowl upside down.

The Stranger

I am a mute tear of an alien eyeI roll and run, and disappear somewhereLike lost names of forgotten storiesI fade from hearts; I vanish somewhere.

I am an opened budAmong the stones of a remote mountainI will never be pinned in anyone's hair or shirtNo one's eyes have ever known me.

On the robe of the galaxy of beingI am an unknown, unseen starIn a distant, unknown valleyI am a shadow falling on a cliff

I am a drop from the skies of lifeFallen in to a raging oceanSwept away by a stormThen made a stranger to myself

A bird flying in an unknown flockI move my wings to someone else's willMy screams of pain do not belong hereTherefore I keep my mouth sealed

TEARS

Warm salty waterFlowing towards the collarGoing to its eternal stillnessParting from eyes still full of life

Every teardrop is teamed withSounds of a secret worldPicking a familiar pathTaking un-familiar steps

The language of a feeble worldThrows itself at the feet of power This sleepy lullaby of feelingsThat is played by eyelashes

This shared mute languageIs known to every eyeIt is home to every love andThe clamour of every hatred

SATAN LAUGHED

The Creator gifted to manThis beautiful, colorful landWith its high mountains and its riversAnd He put His love in man's heart.

But the man, incited by the devilNurtured the love for gold, silver and land in his heartAnd for this very love, spilled the blood of his own brotherTears flooded from the eyes of the angelsAnd Satan smiled. The man, for this very love subdued nationsArmies were set up in the name of a great generalCountries were subjugated,Homes destroyed.Treausuries filled with gold and silver. The general built a fort around his cityAnd moved on, lusting after riches of another city.Swords were drawnKnives were reddenedHeads rolled.Villages set ablaze, cities put on fire

The general took women to the edge of the cityTo make fortunes in the ill-famed corners of the bazaar

Page 48: A selection from modern Pashto poetrydownloads.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/pdf/pashto/modern...When I go to see flowers in the garden I stand lonely in the crowd of flowers I feel the devastation

He lined up the young menTheir hearts racing, their eyes astonished And a moment later, By order of the great leaderHeads fell like autumn leavesThe angels wept; Satan danced with joyFor centuries, the flames of war burnt citiesShed the blood of the innocent, unaware people,Along with moustached brave heroesAnd lions.Coloring the hillsides and the desertsAnd one night, some unholy satanic thoughtFound its way into the heart of a merciless general. He summoned his troopsAnd pointed to the great temple of the enemyThe hearts of the angels trembledAnd Satan felt bursting with joyThe general, along with his blood thirsty armyLooted villages, harvests and cities ;Burnt everything.Once again the hillsides were reddened with bloodDeserts were colored,Graveyards were filledThe screams of women and children rose from the cityThe land seethed with the fear of the armiesThe general, like a bloodthirsty animalWith red eyes, roared in angerHe moved toward the temple with bared swordSevered the heads of the prostrate in prayer

An hour later, the temple was destroyedFlames danced over the house of GodSparks of revenge shoneIn the heartsInside the chests of children in countries far awayThe fires of anger nested there foreverAnd in the heavens, angels started wailingAnd from the house of Satan issued great peals of laughter.

AT NIGHT I BECOME A CHILD

Sometimes the sunshine sprays over the villageThe sun stabbing the night with its dagger of rays Hot lips kiss nose-ringsGolden hands play in the streamWhite hands, paper-thin with quill-like fingers, the childrenPick the chalk boardsSing their ABC's as nightingalesChildish moments spring to memory The village, the stream and by stream sideStands majestically a white Chinar tree, a beautiful ChinarAnd under the Chinar a small mosque The 'Mehram' swept away by flood water, the pulpit long gone No chain nor lock, not even a doorThe floor had no covering save the soft sand from the flashfloodAt each morn the far mountain chased away the sun raysIn the Chinar-shaded pool the peacock spread its feathersWe'd come too like a flock of green parrotsAlong-side the Chinar, white writing on the black boardHow sweet it felt, like sugar and candyMy heart yearns for childhood again But the heart, a child, does not understandWho will let me in the children's line ?I want to be a child to write on the blackboard

TO A FRIEND

Forget, my friend, forget the pastDrink a cup, and forget old pains The carvan of life, my friend Never stops, never waits.Drink up, for time flies Youth still will be here, but not the Spring Or Spring too, but sans dear friend! My friend, for this life Shadows and doubts, and strong fears I feel This life is merciless, being so short of time A lifetime is like at lightning speed Its laughter one of melancoly In this laughter, my friend Don't miss the pleasure, even in its lightspeed send For regrets, then, will nothing mean Prostrations befit the piousBut, oh, my friend! a moment of being awareIs sweet torture, truly, and of this, beware! Come, let us both be fools Find some madmen, some drunken foolsThen my friend we will go to the wilderness And forget these shacklesAnd shout and cry like madmenMy heart is crying for the wilderness

Women's complaint

Autumn winds do not let buds laugh Cruel hunters keep the nightingales from the flowers

My will is not mine, I belong to the religion of forceMy father does not let me do what I wish

I have no say in which house I will burnMy sweetheart, they will not let me have you

Who can i complain to, where can i cryTradition do not let me speak the truth

When I am beaten, i can tell no oneCruelty beats me, then does not let me cry

How long will I remain in the darkness of ignorance? They deny me the light of science, knowledge, art

It is wrong to expect me to educate sane childrenWhen school is forbidden to me

What future can i offer my childrenWhen the doors of education are shut in my face?

WANDERER

After a long whileI returned to my homeland To the cityWhere I had left my youth.

The same town, same streets Many houses just as they were before But when I thought about life's journey Many things have changed, few were as before

After years of exile I had come back to my homeland Same city, same streets But I had come to another town

Wherever I walked in the cityWandering up and downI recognized no oneAnd no one recognized me.

Some were deadOthers had gone on paths unkownThe ones remaining appeared to meAs ravaged by a twenty years long Jehad.

How could it remain untouchedBy all the regimes which came and wentNo sanity, no morality remainsNor sane wishes and minds

Then I looked at myself I was no longer the one who had been PasarlayTwenty years long exile had turned meInto something else, with the same name

Slowly, I went out of the city Wandered aimlessly down some pathsI said to myself maybe I will at least recognize My poplar forest.

In whose lap would grow My imagination, my thought, my fantasy That inspired poems And were friends to my secrets.

In their dim shadeMaybe my youth is still asleepIf I wake it with my prattlingIt may give me a new life.

Some were broken by the bears Some were eaten by locustsThe remaining were half dyingInsecure, like one who is chased.

There were no tall poplarsNor proud plane treesWhose shade would bring forthSprings which lasted until Fall.

There was not even a single familiar willowIn whose shadow I could restNot a single place remainedWhere I could seek refuge.

I gathered dried skins from wounded lipsI gathered the pain from hearts that bleed I gathered the sounds of painI gathered once thrilling burnt heartsI gathered burnt spots from the top of heartsI gathered portraits of secretsI made from this wonderful melodies of the springI spread them over boundaries of hearts

A BOOK UNREAD

And I?On a shelf in a ruined houseIn some old clothSome old sheetsI am wrappedAway from everything, hidden from sightForever silentLike a book that no one has readTthat no one can read.A passerby appearsIs drawn to take this bookHe looks at its pictures and its wavy linesAnd becomes upsetThen he respectfully puts the book back and says to himself This is a strange book; it is hard to readThis is not philosophy, not astronomy, not medicineHe wonders - is it [really] a book or not. Then comes another passerby, tiredHe is filled with the desire to possess this book And he looks at it from a distance and says to himselfIt's good. It is very good but it is hard to readHard to understand.

I agree with himBecause IAm this book and a few wavy linesI am a book, a silent, unread bookI am a story, a poem of lifeI am a tale of warFilled with love, honor and braveryI am the book thatNo one can read

Page 93: A selection from modern Pashto poetrydownloads.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/pdf/pashto/modern...When I go to see flowers in the garden I stand lonely in the crowd of flowers I feel the devastation

A DREAM UNCOMPLETED

What a lovely night it wasSuch a blessed nightI still remember when youCame to my roomWithout worryingThat some one could see you, [could] condemn youYou sat on the edge of my bedAnd my tongue was caught in my throatAnd, you alsoWere burning like a candle in the nightYou could not speak.Only our eyes looked into each otherOur hearts beatOur lips remained silentThen our eyes started to speakBegan exchanging the secrets of our hearts I complained to you, you complained to meEverything became a complaintEyes complaining, hearts complaining, hopes complainingWe disappeared, lost in each other’s eyesThen the muezzin's call awakened me "O believers, prayer is better than sleep"I said, "Indeed, but how I wish my dream had been completed.

LIKENING

On the skylight of my heartLie splays of flowers of your memoriesBecoming breezes and leaves,With eyes shut, I visualize your body, its flowers in bloomSome times I hear rustling white and red flowersjasmines walk aroundchrysanthemums and poppiesSitting beside these bundles of flowers I seek a metaphorThen it comes so to me thatI have never seen the flowers of a fig treeAnticipatingA water lilyI look aroundI fearI fear, may it never happen thatSomeone may burn me, with the flowers.
