Long Beach Line Goes Bus"MY BUS runs like a million dol-

lars!" exclaimed Operator Arthur Shi-mack as he pulled his brand-newDreamliner into the bus deck at theMTA Depot, Sixth and Main Sts., LosAngeles, at 4:45 a.m., Sunday, April 9.About a dozen passengers got off.

It was the first bus schedule to beoperated between Los Angeles andLong Beach in regular service. WithOperator Shimack came InstructorFrank A. Bacus to assist in case anyproblems concerning routes, fares, etc.,shoulcl come up on this pioneer trip.

Fifteen minutes later (5:00 a.m.)Mr. Shimack, again accompanied byMr. Bacus, and with a few early morn-ing passengers, steered his bus out ofthe concourse on to Main St. as he

began the first scheduled bus tripLong Beach.

There was no fanfare as the first busmoved in and out of the depot. Theexcitement had been earlier that morn-ing, when the last regularly scheduledrail train left the viaduct for LongBeach at 3:45 in two sections of twocars each. The departure marked theend of the interurban system whichhad been started by Henry Huntingtonin 1901, and whose first train rolledon july 4, 1902—interestingly enough,on the Long Beach line.

The knell of the Long Beach railservice was sounded last year whenthe Pacific Electric Railway Mr. Hunt-ington founded refused to renew theLong Beach rail lease beyond its cx-

General Manager Cone T. Bass re-ported to the Authority at its meetingMay 2 that, on the basis of checksmade four days before and four daysafter the conversion:

"Patronage on the local and flyerservice taken together equals and some-

times exceeds that of the rail service."As anticipated, the Freeway Flyers

are equalling or bettering scheduledtime and also former rail time.

"Also as anticipated—and as sched-uled—the local service, because of itssomewhat longer route and more fre-quent stops, takes longer than the railservice did."

"THE BEST SAFETY DEVICEknown is you, and the best part ofit is nine inches above your shoul-ders," said Safety Engineer Francis J.Donnelly to a group of 18 Division 1Operators on Friday, April 20.

He was presenting the first of a se-ries of one-hour refresher courses insafety currently being offered by Tran-sit Casualty Co. safety engineers—allof them former Operators—at thevarious divisions. In addition to Mr.Donnelly, both Safety Engineer Wil-liam B. Winter and Chief Safety En-gineer J. W. Prutsman are talkingsafety to groups of Operators who at-tend the course while on shine, or bytheir own desire while waiting at thedivision between runs.

The course supplements the basictraining in safety that all Operatorshave had, and calls for demonstrations—some unexpected—by the speakers,and for audience participation in sim-

ple experiments and tests to illustratepoints to be made.

Because a complete report of thefull hour of closely packed informa-tion would require more space thancan be devoted to the subject in asingle issue, THE EMBLEM report

rthe course will be presented in threelli iinstallments, of which this is the first.

"You're all professional drivers,"Mr. Donnelly pointed out. "That is,you are paid to operate buses, trolleycoaches, or PCC cars. As profession-als, you are sane drivers."

At this point he showed a posterwith an anagram on the word"SANE": It said the sane driver is:

andE—expects the other fellow to do

something wrong."Since you are professionals, you

should possess far more ability than

the average motorist — the amateur.You should have more knowledge thanhe has of the size, capabilities, andlimitations of your equipment," thespeaker continued.

"Also, since you earn your livingby driving, it is most important toavoid accidents, which may result inloss of earnings, suffering for yourselfand others, and damalte to equipment.

"MTA does its best to give you de-pendable equipment with the bestavailable brakes and other safety de-vices. But the best known safety deviceis you." (Here Mr. Donnelly showed a• ard inscribed with these words.)

"Let's talk about the basic causes ofaccidents. What do you think some ofthem are?" he asked his listeners.

R epli es were various: "Fatigue.""Assumption." "Distance." "Careless-ness." "Worry." "Speed." "Weather.""Time." "Distractions." "Traffic con-gestion." "Schedules," etc.

"Excellent," said the speaker. "Now,can you see the factors common to allthese causes?"

The dass looked puzzled."How about time, distance, and

speed?" suggested Mr. Donnelly."Every accident is caused by motion ofsome sort, and what is motion exceptgoing from one place to another? Andto get there means going a certain

distance in a certain time at a certainspeed.

"Time, distance, and speed are soimportant that much of this hour'sdiscussion will be concerned withthem.

"How many of you have ever beencalled upon to testify in an accidentcase in tourt? If you have, you knowthat practically all questions asked bythe attorneys deal in one way or an-other with these three factors. Hence,you should be fully armed with factsas accurate as possible before takingthe stand. Moreover, you should un-derstand the relationship of one fac-tor with another, and the implicationsof the statements the attorneys maydraw from you.

" 'How far away were you from thepoint of impact when you first be-came aware of possible danger?' —'How fast were you traveling whenthe accident happened?' These arequestions that may be loaded withdynamite. If your answer to one isshown by simple mathematics to beinconsistent with your answer to theother on the basis of police reportsand measurements, your credibility asa witness, no matter how honest youranswers were in intention, may be-come doubtful in the eyes of a jury.

Saves Auto from Flames,Chosen Operator of Month

FOR STOPPING bis loaded bus inorder to extinguish a fire that hadstarted in an automobile during the

afternoon rushhour on the SanBernardino Free-way, Joseph W.Howard, of Di-vision 9, El Monte,was selected Op-erator of theMonth for April.

"I asked mypassengers if theywould rnind if Idelayed nur sched-

ule a couple of minutes to put out thefire that had started in the car as theresult of its collision with another au-tomobile," said Mr. Howard. "My bus,like all others, is equipped with a fireextinguisher, and we could all see themotorist vainly trying to put out thefire by using various articles of cloth-ing.

"The passengers were in favor ofthe stop, so I pulled the bus to a safespot, grabbed the fire extinguisher, andhanded it to the automobile driver.When I saw he didn't know how touse it, I took it back and put out thefire."

The letter which won Mr. Howardthe courtesy award was signed by 48of bis passengers on the Hellman Ave.line schedule.

Judges were three members of theMontebello Community Chamber ofCommerce.

Mr. Howard, with service from1923, lives with Mrs. Howard in Glen-dora. The couple have two grown sons.

SITUATED in the southwestern sec-tion of Los Angeles at 54th St. andArlington Ave., Division 5 provideslocal bus service an 23 lines over awidespread area of the City.

Up to Feb. 15, when eight CrossTown lines were added to the then15 assigned wholly or partially fromDivision 5, the monthly mileage rolledup by the buses was approximately660,000—highest of any of the di-visions. The figure as of March 31,after the first full month's experiencewith Cross Town lines, was estimatedat 735,000 miles.

A total of 378 Operators roll upthe mileage under the direction ofTed Latham, Division Superintendent,

and V. A. Wetmore, Assistant DINvision Superintendent. The Superin-tendents are aided by seven Clerksand a Division Stenographer.

Instruction of the Operators is byC. P. (''Pete") Pedersen and JohnSeale, of the Instruction Department.

Allocated to the division are 248buses, which are maintained and serv-iced by a staff of 73 under the direc-tion of Paul W. Brown, Division Su-perintendent, and Frank Abroson,General Foreman. Mr. Abroson han-dles the day shift, in addition to otherduties; Foreman Orville Ellis super-vises the second shift; and ForemanLoren Wiley, the third shift.

light and power in Division 5 buildings and yards. The long, low building is used asa shop and garage facility and also for bus storage. A considerable portion of the yardextends east and south of the shops. A photo of the south or service yard is on page 11.

repair, and servicing at Division 5enable Mr. Brown's men to performmost types of work a bus may needexcept for unit overhaul, which isdone for all divisions at South Park.

Facilities were increased last Jan-uary by the addition of a second busvacuum cleaner and by the remodelingof one of the bays in the maintenancebuilding for servicing and repair work.

WOverhead automatic doors were alsodded at this time to the north side

of the three bays used for inspection,heavy repairs, and body work.

The Purchasing Department main-tains a store of bus parts and materialsat this location, with L. P. (Tat")Kelly as full-time Storekeeper.

Division 5 is the largest of the di-visions in point of numbers of Op-erators, lines, buses, and miles oper-ated. It is exceeded only by Division2 in the number of maintenance per-sonnel.
