The designs probably identify the owner’s unit.

The Romans wore metal helmets, the side flaps for protection were held on by leather strips.

Roman soldiers were very disciplined and practised their battle tactics regularly.

By having the shields above their heads, soldiers were protected from falling arrows.

The centurion is wearing plate armour. This type weighed about 9kg.

The soldiers fought as a unit. When not fighting they built roads, aqueducts, bridges and other public buildings.
