Volunteer Appreciation Shout Out! As the pictures on page 5 so clearly show, this years Adult Volunteer Appreciation Dinner was a huge success, and a whole lot of fun! Special thanks to Alicia Alvarez and Angela Hazzi for their talents with decorating and setting the sporting mood for the evening. We must also recognize and give thanks to Raquel Leon, Lupita, and Sandra Garcia for preparing all of the tacos and hotdogs. Peppino’s never disappoints either, so thank you to them for providing our Italian faire. DJ Ernie kept the beat going strong, and got those feet moving! Thank you Fr. Thomas, Fr. Greg, Fr. Silva, Fr. Thomas’ Friends and Santiago’s Staff for working hard to make sure that our volunteers feel valued and appreciated, beyond just one evening, for all of their talents and service to our parish. Most of all, thank you to our volunteers, the heart of our community. Without you and all you do, not only would this evening not be necessary, but everything we hold dear at Santiago as a community of the faithful would not be possible. We are truly blessed.

Important Sunday Office Hours Change This Sunday, June 12th, our Reception Office will be closed. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Starting June 19th through mid-July, our Sunday office hours will be altered to 9am to 3:30pm, closed for lunch from 12pm to 12:30pm. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Camino de Santiago - 2016 by Dave Owens

For nearly a millennium the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, in Spain, has been the resting place for the remains of the Apostle Saint James. Since Medieval times, pilgrims have walked along the “Way of St. James”, traveling for months to arrive at Santiago de Compostela. In all of the United States there is only one parish church and community dedicated to the Apostle St. James, bearing the namesake of Santiago de Compostela. Here, in the Diocese of Orange, in Lake Forest, our community is blessed with the privilege of calling ourselves the “Parish of Santiago de Compostela”. To honor the Feast of St. James, celebrated annually on July 25th, our parish community has inaugurated a local pilgrimage along the “Way of St. James”. Last year (2015), our first “Camino”, a walk of 4.1 miles, more than 225 Santiago pilgrims participated. Each year we hope to expand the scope and increase the participation in the Camino.

ALONG THE WAY How many times will I pass this WAY? Is this the road that leads me HOME?

Along the Way I feel alone, the uneven path stirs up my fear.

I doubt, I tremble, I fear I should turn back!

Is that the sound of distant thunder, a strike’s echoing call?

Or, Is that the sound of a Siren’s call, a deceptive urge to alter my tact?

Along the WAY I feel alone; Who will lead me Home? I doubt, I tremble, but I can not turn back!

Is it time to go back? I’ve come too far. My legs are weak, my will is shaken.

Along the Way I feel alone, when will I feel His helpful hand?

I doubt, I tremble, I will not turn back!

I sense a growing swell within me, My gait quickens, my stride increases.

Along the Way I’m not alone; Who guides me? Why did I doubt, why did I tremble?

For, He is the Way!

Recap on the Trip to the Mission Basilica Holy Door

In May, a group of Santiago pilgrims carpooled down to the Mission Basilica to experience the indulgence and spiritually gained by passing through the designated Holy Door. This experience was popular and well attended, so much so that some have requested we do it again. The anticipated time frame would be on Saturday, June 25th. However, before we call the Mission Basilica to reserve time on that date, we must know how many are joining in. If you are interested in this pilgrimage, please call the Parish Office at 949-951-8599 and be prepared to share your phone number and the number of people who plan on attending.

Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time On today’s Jubilee for Those Sick and Suffering Disabilities, Jesus encounters a woman who is “spiritually ill.” She is thus “disabled” from participating in Israel’s worshiping community or polite society. Bathing Jesus’ feet with tears, drying them with unveiled hair, anointing them (Luke 7:38) risk Jesus’ becoming “unclean.” Yet his mercy welcomes even such inappropriate behavior as her sincere manifestation of love: “Your sins are forgiven. Go in peace” (7:48, 50). Go not just in “peace,” but in shalom, the all-enveloping, life-changing assurance of God’s mercy. She is anonymous, “known in the city” only as “a sinful woman” (7:37). The character with name and religious title, “Simon the Pharisee” (7:36, 40), judges her harshly, but himself not at all, and thus forfeits God’s mercy. This Jubilee Year of Mercy challenges us to self-examination. In which role do we most often cast ourselves, humble sinner or judgmental Pharisee? Jesus declares that only by an unfailing willingness to show mercy to fellow sinners can we hope to obtain mercy ourselves (see Misericordiae Vultus, 9). —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Forgiveness To forgive is to set a prisoner free and to discover that the prisoner is me. —Anonymous

He llegado demasiado lejos.

Dudo, emblo, ¡no voy a volver atrás!
