Dear Parishioners of Sandusky Catholic Community,
Next week we have the Feasts of All Saints and All Souls. They
are marvelous Feasts and I want to capture the sense of sanctity that
the first feast dreams up by reflecting on one of my favorite Saints,
Francis of Assisi.
Francis was not named Francis when he was a baby. He was
named John by his parents, Peter and Pica Bernadone, but Peter
spent so much time on the road, enriching his already rich self, that he was off trading
when his son was born, causing mischievous neighbors to nick his son’s name to
Francesco, which basically means “the French guy.”
Francis is viewed by some as the “Father of the Ecology movement,” but I don’t know if
that title would fit well with him. For all his love of nature, Francis was most consumed
by his love of Jesus Christ. Francis was not an activist or contemplative per se, but an
active contemplative who could conduct his outer life at full speed without his inner life
being overwhelmed or lost.
Jesus said, “Give everything to the poor and follow me.” Francis gave away his home,
patents, dignity, lute, hat with a cool feather and clothes and stood naked as a baby in the
public square. And because Genesis said that God made and blessed all creatures, plants,
landforms, and elements, Francis loved them all, including wolves, lizards, snakes,
blizzards, volcanoes, rain and lightning storms and every creepy insect, plant and human
on earth.
And because the Son of Man had no place to lay his head, Francis refused to own
property of any kind, including even sandals to negotiate the stone terrain of Umbria, and
so spent his life bare and bloody-footed , which is to say “blessed” by all those stones.
For Francis, Jesus was a physical presence and he talked and danced for and bowed and
babbled constantly to him, like nothing we’ve seen except the street-mad and bag ladies,
really thanking Christ for every blow received at the hands of thugs, every insult from
skeptics and mockers, every pang of hunger, every turn of the weather, especially turns
for the worse, every scrap of begged food.
But even old Francis has a body. In and of this body was a comfort-loving animal like
us. And there were times in his long marriage to Poverty when his animal body hadn’t
eaten for days or even weeks, and was literally starving and so when Francis and his
brothers begged for a little food, and perhaps cooked it, it smelled so marvelous, that
upon bowing over it, even in Christ’s presence, poor Francis’ eyes would crave the food
not only because it was a gift from Christ, but because dang it, it smelled so good. It was
not unusual at some of these times, that Francis would take ashes and spread them on his
food. He did this because food topped with ashes is darned hard for body and mind to
desire, and desirelessness, said the holy man, Meister Eckhart, is the virgin that eternally
gives birth to Jesus. Having preserved this virginity and this birth, Francis lit into his
meal with gooey, grey-mouthed relish.
As I write this in the animal comfort of my office, my clothing, my socks and shoes, that
to give a man as average as me to write of a man as sublimely love-crazed as Francis is to
give that average man a chance to sound like a high-flown platitudinous ninny. Francis’
love for his Lord was so ecstatic, creative, physical and contagious, that even though
there are things that I would die for, I feel in comparison to this man, that I hardly begun
to love at all.
Saints like Francis did not have the “average” or “everyday” sense of things, but for him
every moment a gift, every breath a prayer, and if we sat with him tonight and voiced our
disbelief in the miracles and gifts and God Presence, he would go on believing in them so
much more powerfully that we would have to run from the room to escape the great
gravitational pull of his love.
These people are the saints. Hopefully we will see you at Church on their Feast Day.
We don’t understand them, really, but saints like Francis, lead us to see clearer God’s
grace, love and Presence.
In Him, Fr. Joe

PERPETUATE THE GIFT
Support our Priests’ Retirement: Clergy vocations are the cornerstone of our Catholic Church and we are grateful for the service that our priests have given to their local parishes. In the United States, half of all the diocesan priests are expected to retire by 2019.Express your appreciation for those who have faithfully served in the Diocese of Toledo by making a gift to Perpetuate the Gift
Appeal. Your gift benefits our retired diocesan priests, retired diocesan priests, and your Parish. Once a priest retires, he is responsible for his own personal expenses: medical, housing, clothing, and food. All funds contributed between Oct 1 and
Dec 31, 2017, help reduce the amount the parish contributes to
the fund. A gift of cash or check can be sent to Perpetuate the Gift, P.O. Box 954, Toledo, OH 43697 or placed in the parish collection. A gift may also be made online at
www.toledodiocese.org.

World Hunger: While the percentage of undernourished persons in the world has decreased from last year, there is still an alarming number who go to bed hungry each night-including here in the U.S. There are several websites which can be accessed simply by searching “world hunger” that will provide more information and ways to help. We sincerely thank you for making a difference in the lives of so many throughout the year with your donations for our 2nd Sunday Collections to help those in
need in our community!
Community Collection for the month of
November is for Military Personnel. If you would like to participate, please take a bag, available at all exits from church the weekend of November 4th & 5th. serving the Sandusky area for more than 117 years. We pledged to serve our Faith, our families, and our
communities, helping everyone, no matter what race or religion.
We support all three of our local parishes – Holy Angels, Sts. Peter & Paul and St. Mary’s.
We sponsor a working team for the weekly Community Suppers. We provide both high school and college
scholarships to our area students. We strongly support the Cub & Boy Scouts at St. Mary’s. We are part of the
newly formed “Project Lifesaver” sponsored by the Sandusky Lions Club and the Erie County Sheriff’s
Department. These and many more projects are just part of our Sandusky Council.
Now is the time for you to joins us. Please contact our membership chairman –
Steve Lasnoski (419 357 0256) or any member of our council for more information. You will be glad you did.
May God continue to bless you and your family
