okay so, heres what happened. i was sitting with my friend lauren and we were talking about the

internet which as you may know is one of my favorite things i really love facebook. so then we

were talking and lauren and i came up with this idea to make a survey monkey about my own

facebook because i was really curious what people actually think about the stuff i do on fb.

so i went inside and made a 10 question survey monkey about my profile and then i put it on the

internet for a few days and this is what happened.

plz note there was an overall participation of 110 people, ~75% of whom finished the survey.

That is about 1/10 of my facebook friends (!!!! wasnt expecting that!!!!).

q1: do you know me irl (in real life)

this is important bc this survey is really measuring the effect of the major shift in how i

facebooked this year ~march/april when i kind of left behind my bourgeois academic

understanding of what communication had to be and began pretty consistently exploring

alternative ways of getting across information on the internet.

this was coupled w a v important change in audience: while is still communicated regularly irl

with irl friends, the people i interacted primarily with shifted to an almost exclusive online

community (shouts out to the alt lit people ive met irl, including steve roggenbuck, rachel

pattycake bell, kickflip mctwist, nathan masserang, olivia lilley, etc ilu all). so i wanted to establish

early on how many people taking this survey fell in the three categories presented: online, irl orsome combo of both.

q2: how did u find this survey

unsurprisingly many of these people were from my fb but we should also notice that someone

found out about this during their nsa briefing, which is v concerning i thought i was on a list but to

have it confirmed is intense.

q3: in general, like, whats ur over all opinion of my internet usage.

i am happy that some people really like my internet usage but am concerned that so many

people just like it. i want to get to that audience better and be creating better content for them. i

am not sure why people are about to hide me but they are probably libertarians so im not v

concerned if they hide me. i am hopeful that the 12 people who always want to unfriend me are

joking, and am concerned that no one who has hidden me took the survey. that srsly gets in the

way of understanding why some of my content is offensive or too much but those people are

probably also libertarians or like republicans so i remain mostly unconcerned but also a part of

my heart gets sad when i think that someone must have hidden me from their feed...its like

theyre hiding a piece of my soul :(

q4: Do you like, dislike, or neither like nor dislike Barack Obama? (this question was suggested

by survey monkey)

this question actually became super interesting i just put it in bc it was recommended and i

thought it was funny. but when we get to the politics part youll see how people react to my

political posts but they often (much more than not too) choose a different result than the one i

would choose, which is dislike a great deal bc barack obama is a climate traitor war monger

who brings shame to the nobel prize and to chicago organizing, that asshole. ha so yeah people

seem to like obama a lot more than i do ha.

lol i loved this one. i am so glad selfies had such a strong showing i truly believe in the selfie art

form!!! and not just because steve roggenbuck and rachel pattycake bell popularized it in

2012-13 (hehe!) but yeah, i think selfies are v fun and actually v expressive ways to show where

u r and how u feel and how to be notable

i am excited that politcal commentarty made it so high and won!! that is really why i am putting

effort into this so im glad that even though it was a small margin it still one.

q6: if i post something about politics do you read it? why/why not?

q6 was hyper stressful for me bc this is really secretly the heart of the survey, and even more

than that, why i believe in social media anyway. i really like want to be able to engage in some

really critical discourse on facebook.com and many of the responses were frustrating to me but

a lot more made me feel really good. the responses landed either on fuck yeah dude ur great tour fucking dumb and there was a little gray area excepting people who were like its in my

newsfeed or like u post too much. here are a lot of the ones that i thought were most intersting

emotion not logic but OKAY KEEP SAYING THINGS. and i dont even know what too radical can

mean, like shouldnt it matter if it is correct or not? anyway this one pissed me off a lot

^ this one, again, made me hella mad. like expand my horizons do you even ???? you also

generally agree

i dont know. i guess at the end of this section there were a lot of compliments (~50) and like ~20

of these, which confuse me mostly because they make no sense and im not trying to be a d, but

when you tell me that you dont like what i say and then make a nonsensical response im like,

gonna be a bit mad!!!!

thanks to the people who truly boosted the procedure by cogent concepts, like that i need to post

more links to where i am getting my info to help scaffold understanding. i heard ya!!!

q7: what do you think of that selfie

selfie:

the selfie, a necessary shout out to the vanity of the survey, but like that is how it goes you know

if you want to be better at facebook you have to come to grips with ur own vanity. but also like i

said earlier, the selfie is a v important form of expression to me and this is in many ways how i

felt at that moment. i was v tired and drinking a pbr. i had recently ran my hand through my hair

thus its extra pointiness. people had a hella ton of opinions about all this ranging from mean to

flattering (im suspicious of tiff wines saying im a qt hehe!)

q8: rate the folowing: what are your opinions about art and do you like it do you think the internet

makes sense as an artistic space and does this survey count as art? (yes on left no on right)

while know only a bit about art a lot of people think this was artistic.

q9: does it make u uncomfortable to think about facebook as art rather than just a place to talk to

people and is it ridiculous that i would try to do that (from good to bad as left to right)

i cant decipher this one either. sorry i was really tired when i wrote this. lets move to the

CONCLUSION:

overall i would say i am doing really good but could do better on fb

i plan on including more direct sources to political posts to help scaffold understanding, which isrealize is important when providing narratives outside the hegemonic bull shit of the repub/dem

divide. also being a non-violent, anti-capitalist anarchist i have to realy do a lot of explanation bc i

dont really fit into usually archetypical political identities that are mainstreamed (lamestreamed!)

anyway i also wish i had asked a q about 1d (one direction) which if feel is one of the more

unique aspects of myself, and also i wish i had asked about my cover photos and prof pics bc i

am actually hyper-cognizant of the branding that those particular pieces do.

im really interested in doing a more focused survey about my brand and what people percieve it

as. i might also wait to do this until ive done more branding. branding is the humanexperience--we are always performing identities and offering ourselves to be seen by other

people (which is kinda funny when u think about it) so i also hope this survey encourages people

to think about their brand and what identities they have and how their identities intersect with

what they want to tell people

finally, thank you to everyone who participated and read this report. i hope it was interesting to

read, and i hope u consider doing a survey too, maybe you can learn from what you liked or didnt

like from mine. i will probably do this again because it was fun tbqh.
