Students who live in Baltimore County but outside the Franklin High zone can apply for special permission to attend FHS if they meet certain criteria. The first day that parents could submit applications for special transfer for the 2017-2018 school year was April 3, and when I arrived that morning at 5:00am there were already four families waiting in the parking lot to submit their paperwork. Many more arrived over the next few hours. The fact that families are choosing to send their children to FHS lets me know that we have a positive image in the community, and my staff and I work hard every day to live up to their expectations.

In April, Franklin High was recognized again by US News & World Report as one of the na-tion’s most challenging high schools in terms of the level of academic rigor. While we celebrate student accomplishments in so many extracur-ricular areas, academic success remains our pri-mary goal.

Thank you to all of the alumni who support the school by attending various events and/or contributing to the scholarship fund. If you would like to visit the school or find out what is going on, feel free to call me at (410) 887-1119 or email me at [email protected]. The school’s web site is franklinhs.bcps.org. We hope to involve alumni in the school’s bicentennial celebration in 2020. Please contact me if you would like to help plan events specifically for alumni.

Two years ago, the Reisterstown Branch of Baltimore County Public Library partnered with Digital Maryland, a collaborative, statewide digitization program that is based at Baltimore’s Enoch Pratt Free Library/State Library Resource Center. As per the program’s website, their mission is, “to facilitate the digitization and digital exhibition of the historical and cultural document, images, audio and video held by Maryland institutions.”

Of BCPL’s 19 branches, Reisterstown is only one of three that supports a local history collection. Housed in the Reisterstown Room on the second fl oor of the library, the largest number of items there relate to the history of Franklin Academy and its eventual transformation into Reisterstown High School and then Franklin High School.

After a year-and-a-half in the making, Digital Maryland now features digitally 118 items that are part of “Th e Franklin Collection: Th e Evolu-tion of a School.” Ann O’Neill, Franklin High’s former librarian from 1987-2008 now works with the local history collection and she identi-fi ed, interpreted, labeled, and meta-tagged the items in preparation for digitization and upload to the Internet. More items will eventually be added as will, hopefully, some very unique items that are currently held in Franklin High’s own archives.

Th e Collection can currently be viewed at http://www.digitalmaryland.org under its title. Featured are photographs, commencement programs, postcards, a few early yearbooks, diplomas, artifacts, and more. Th e site is searchable by subject, key word, individual names, and dates. For example, searching here for a Berryman ancestor, one would be linked to Berrymans in an 1897 high school certifi cate of scholarship; an 1897 Medairy Medal awarded for spelling and etymology; three group photos from 1892, 1898, and 1903; seven commencement programs for 1888,

1890, 1894, 1897, 1899, 1900, and 1911; Class Day/Night programs for 1903 and 1912; the 1908, 1909, and 1910 yearbooks, and an 1899 diploma.

Franklin truly has a long and rich heritage and a glimpse of some of that is now available for the world to see!
