Winnipeg's Music City Capricorn window

A nationwide promotion between its promo-tion men in the field and their retail outletsnetted WEA Music of Canada an effectivepromotion for Capricorn product and a prizewinning retailer. Winner of the top prizewas Mrs. I. Lewis of the Music City Store onPortage Ave. in Winnipeg. Winning salespromo rep was WEA's 'Peg rep, Don Coward. The idea for the Capricorn week was puttogether by WEA's Larry Green, John Heaneand Mike Reed and was similar to a Capri-corn Month held in the U.S. which appar-ently met with much success. The idea wasto launch Capricorn with the FM progressivecrowd, concentrating on the major centreswith in-store and window displays, all usingthe "peaches" theme and the local progres-sive FM radio station call letters. Prizes ofpre -packs of eight albums, posters, tee shirtsand samplers were awarded once a day forthe week. The contest was an example of what can bedone through cross -promotion. The label wascross -promoted at the store level and thestore was being cross -promoted at the radiostation, where plugs ran constantly on "Lookfor the Canada Capricorn display". Listenerresponse at CFRW-FM in Winnipeg wasapparently exceptional with an average ofthirty calls each evening asking when the nextCapricorn prize would be awarded. SaysGreen: "The promotion was more thanworthwhile. People became familiar withthe names of Capricorn artists and program-mers became tuned -in to the label".

WEA backed their Capricorn promotion witha solid stocking plan that saw a good sales

Boss Brass (the best damn band in the land)and most recently Keath Barrie, is now payingoff in strong sales action and dealer andrack jobber interest. When will other Canadian record peoplesrealize that not everyone out there in cus-tomerland, wants nothing but hard rock, hard folk, hard country???We, at CTL know from umpteen letters fromradio stations and members of the public, there are a lot of people anxious to buy goodmade -in -Canada music. These are frustratedrecord fans who seldom find what they seekwhen they go into record shops due toalmost complete disinterest on the part of theguy or, gal behind the counter whose onlyconcern is for what the local Top 40 stationis churning out."If it's not on the chart, we don't have itand don't want to know".That sort of attitude is what's keeping a lotof good people in Canada down, and willcontinue to keep a Canadian music industryfrom ever, getting it's head above waterfinancially. So - God bless U.A. and all who sail in her!Wake up Canadian record company execu-tives. WHERE THERE'S SMOKETHERE'S FIREmmimDec. 28/74As a free lance photographer I have had thechance to become more interested andinvolved with the Canadian music scene.I enjoy reading RPM and hope if this isprinted it will help other Americans whofeel as I do.

After covering last year's Juno Awards Iwas embarrassed to find such talent inCanada without any exposure given to themStateside. I have written, phoned, sentcheques to A&A Records & Sam the RecordMan in order to get albums unavailable inthe States - a recent example: Ian Tyson'snew album. They refuse to send any ordersto the States. If I am willing to pay dutieswhy won't these stores co-operate?Thanks to Claiide at A&M for a copy oflan'S album and special thanks to LeonardRambeau for always coming through withan early Anne Murray album. If these twobusy men can take the time to address arecord package why the hell can't theretailers?

eA TCHING UP WITHBIG COUNTRY MAILWHAT'S WRONG WITHCANADIAN COUNTRY?Dec. 2/74Anyhow! to say that I thought the CountryConvention held in Toronto was a success, would be an understatement on my part. The speeches on Saturday morning (usuallyreferred to as THE thing to miss!) were sostimulating that they made the afternoonsession like Halloween nite. All the skeletonscame out of the closets, and made morenoises that those two on the Tin Roof. Ipersonally want to thank Walt Grealis &RPM for making it possible, and all those who

participated for making it the most down -to work, creative and complete Conventionthis 01' Boy has ever attended in his life! Afew were heard to say after: "Where do we gofrom here?" I believe this question was alsoanswered by those who already have signedapplications for the Country Music Associa-tion (International). I want to thank MargBeeskau for being in attendance, and as Margis Canadian (from Winnipeg) and Member-ship Chairman of the Assoc., I think theresults in more Canadian participation shouldbe realized soon. I do regret that the PanelSession became too personal and that per-haps some people might have been hurt bysome remark or another, however, isn't itbetter that all those slams, etc., be brought outon the floor of a meeting rather than in back -rooms and sidewalks.

The Talent Showcase on Sunday lackednothing (except a little heat in that place).I hope that in the coming year, all thosewho took part will keep their blood boilingand do something creative for CountryMusic and its artists and fans.

To those who "just couldn't make it" -Thank you! What's wrong with Canadian country?Nothing! It's alive and wellCharlie RussellCJCJ RadioWoodstock, N.B.

COUNTRY -SOMETHINGFOR EVERYCiNE!!!!!!!Let me express my gratitude for having thepleasure of co-ordinating RPM's secondBig Country meeting. After nine meetings, I can honestly say thatBig Country was one of the most enjoyableevents that I have worked on for you.

Not really being a great country fan, t amnot as familiar with country people as I amwith those in other areas of the Canadianmusic industry, but I felt that the attitudeand cooperation of everyone involved andthe reaction that was the aftermath wasvery gratifying.RPM has held bigger events, but Big Countrywas a success to me because the peopleinvolved went out of their way to make ithappen. As the two day meeting tame to a close Ifelt that country people are very good towork with.Staging the showcase was a major chore andthroughout the eight hours I was astonishedwith the polish and professionalism of theartists, managers, radio people and recordpeople involved. The whole thing says some-thing about country people and I have awhole new respect for Canadian countryartists and their representatives.

I hope I have the opportunity to coordinatethe Big Country Awards next year. I can lookforward to working with some of the nicestpeople in the music industry.I would also like to compliment KenMcFarland and Lori Bruner for their effortsin conjunction with putting together theGeorge Taylor 25th Anniversary of RodeoRecords. It came off well and was a suitabletribute to one of the great pioneers ofCanadian music.Stan KleesStan Klees Ltd.Toronto

COVER STORYGRT -A NEW OUTLOOKIf you were to ask GRT Canada's presidentRoss Reynolds the usual staid old question -"Where did it all begin?", he would have totake you back to 1969 when as GeneralRecorded Tape (GRT) they were doing justthat - manufacturing and distributing tapeproduct. Reynolds had come to Canada fromthe parent U.S. company to establish anoperation in a country "with enormouspotential".The tape business however, was in itsinfancy and Reynolds was chafing at the bitto become involved in a business that wasliterally strewn with broken bodies andminds - the record business. His first sub-ject was Ronnie Hawkins who, even at thattime, was a legend in Canada. A taste ofsuccess and Reynolds steamed ahead puttingall his eggs in the Cancon basket. He gam-bled - he won some he lost some but he didestablish 6 RT as a foreign -owned recordcompany that was willing to go out on alimb with domestic product first, to estab-lish an image of a good corporate citizen. The impending CRTC regulations were nodoubt an influencing factor but nevertheless, armed only with Canadian content, Reynoldsspanked life into his newborn and the com-pany edged ahead. It was the year of theCRTC regulations - 1971 when GRT wasrecognized by the industry as CanadianContent Company of the Year, for whichReynolds was presented with a Juno. In1973 GRT was again honoured with a Juno- same category. It's now five years laterand GRT still maintains as what some referto as a top heavy Canadian roster of talentalthough the company has now been substan-tially fortified with hit prone U.S. labels, namely 20th Century. But basically, GRT isstill synonymous with Cancon. They haveshown a great deal of faith in their anchorgroup, Lighthouse, which attracted othernames to the fold. As their roster stands nowthey represent, Moe Koffman, Ian Thomas,Tony Kosinec, James Leroy and others.Through label deals they release product byDownchild Blues Band on their own Speciallabel as well as Axe product including charthabitues, Gary and Dave, and just recentlypatted with the Montreal -based Hardcorelabel.

Chart action is tough, but important for arecord company to impress foreign associatesand their own artists. Crying "foul" or "lackof credibility" is often used by record com-panies who are in fear of losing a toehold inthe international market because of lack ofchart action in their own country. GRT, forthe most part, has worked diligently in main-taining chart positions on RPM's singlesand albums charts. Whether it be James Leroy,Lighthouse or Ian Thomas or even BarryWhite or the DeFranco Family, the label has

always maintained a national chart image.Gold Leaf and Platinum certifications arenot too easy to come by but GRT haschalked up an impressive score with bothGold Leaf and Platinum for all Lighthousealbum releases as well as Gold for foreignreleases including those from the DeFrancoFamily, Barry White, Ray Stevens, MaureenMcGovern, Ray Stevens, and their own"American Graffiti" album. With all this activity on the homefront it'sonly natural that international attention isnow turning toward GRT. Reynolds'hasconcentration on international distributionas well as sub -publishing deals with firms inGermany, South Africa, Australia, NewZealand, Brazil and others. He recentlyfirmed a deal with DJ M Records of the U.K.for distribution of Ian Thomas product andwith MAM for U.K. distribution of JamesLeroy's newest single, "Lady Ellen". MoeKoffman is also now part of the internationalset with releases by CBS in Italy, Japan andthe U.K.It's been five years in the making for GRTand Reynolds can now look back at thattime: "When, initially, 100% of our productwas distributed by other firms". He can nowboast: "We now sell -direct to 70% of themarket, encompassing Ontario, Quebec andthe Maritimes". GRT product is distributedby Laurel, Manitoba; Taylor, Pearson andCarson, Saskatchewan and Alberta; andEmerson Sales in B.C.

Five years of growth has also enlarged theGRT family to the point where it was neces-sary to find a bigger house. Now settled intotheir new quarters on Victoria Park Avenue, and getting used to having their completeoperation under one roof, GRT is gearingfor their biggest year. Says Reynolds: Weare pleased that we're now going to be ableto give a lot better service regarding orderturnaround. To date we've always beenunder the handicap of being in two separatelocations in the city, which only increased theinevitable communications problems betweenoffice and warehouse". Also new for 1975is the company's new graphic image andcloser scrutiny of the national and internat-ional scene. "We are currently negotiatingfor additional international product", saysReynolds, adding: "and will be extendingour activities in both publishing divisions,Tarana and Corinth. And, on a very selectivebasis, we intend to expand our artist roster".

What's in store for GRT is anyone's guess. They're entering the year of "the crunch"with an incredible optomistic view sharedby their complete staff from the seasonedsales veteran Jim Corbett, their Quebec SalesManager, Ken Dion through to new namesfurther the building process including:national promotion manager, Jeff Burns, promotion and sales people, Shan Kelly,Dave Paget, Bruce Hogan and Karen Bander.

Valdy-A musical poet laurete"Thank you for your foresight Pierre for getting a little homegrowntalent on the air". - Valdy (1974)

A baby girl (Chelah), now almost two yearsold, a new album ("Family Gathering"), anew single ("Renaissance"), a new label(A&M) and a brand new year have setCanada's best known travelling minstrel,Valdy, into motion once again. Not knownfor his quickness afoot, Valdy the "simpleman", whether inherited or adopted, hasmaintained that slow Canadian pace thatmany claimed would be his downfall. Hebegan the year 1974 on a high note havingbeen voted a Juno as Folk Singer Of TheYear. Says Valdy: "The Juno Awards, thatwas certainly an honour this year and onethat I hadn't anticipated".The twenty-nine year old Valdy, short forValdmar (D'anish for wanderer in the woods)was born and schooled in Ottawa. On arecent trip to Ottawa Valdy visited thehospital in which he was born: "When Iwas on my way over, to the CBC to do myshow I crunched my finger in the car, got ablister on it and figured I'd crunched the boneand went to the same hospital I was born in tohave an x-ray on it. It felt kind of funnygoing there 'cause it was about the onlytime I'd been there since I was born".Valdy left for the west coast in 1966 andbought a farm in 1970 near Sooke on thewest coast of Vancouver Island: "A loggingand fishing community -a very transientkind of a population on the surface but a lotof people really imbedded in that area".The music part of Valdy's life began whilehe was "a young 'un". He was given a guitarat the age of thirteen. "It was a guitar thathad belonged to a friend of mine I hadadmired greatly. And when I got his guitarI just played it and played it because -I hadsuch good vibrations about it - having heardsuch good music coming out of it. I musthave had it for three years and I played it sohard finally the bridge just flew off, and'the strings wrapped themselves around myarm".Having a carefree spirit and demanding onlythat energy he felt he deserved from hisaudiences, small or large, Valdy trampedfrom one end of Canada to the other gain-ing a greater identity 'with his country, dayatter day. Finally he quit the west coastand moved to a Newfoundland outport."The most inspiring place I've ever seen",explains Valdy: "Paid twenty-five hundreddollars for a little house - four bedrooms, bathroom, floor furnace, storm windows -really in good shape. It's twelve miles out inPuchente Bay. Right on the ocean".The following interview with Valdy will giveyou some idea of the stature of this giant ,

among Canadian folk story tellers.

Can you adapt as a foreigner with theNewfoundland way of life and translatethis into song?A lot of people have done this - taken theNewfoundland way of life and explainedit to other people - like the Newfoundlandjokes. They have really a well imbeddedculture. They've been there for, I guess, three hundred or four hundred years - sincethe Basque fishermen first settled there. Thatgives them a couple of hundred years overany Canadians. So, with roots that deep, they're not really too worried about theiridentity. If people laugh at them they say'Oh b'ye let em laugh'.

Have you been accepted on the Island? We've been well accepted on the Islandbecause we're hard workers, and I thinkthat's kind of the key. Whenever the trawlerscome in with their loads of herring we go

Valdy and daughter Chelah

down to the herring factory and work allday and night cuttin' heads of herring. That's the only industry the Island has - alittle herring factory and lobster factory andif that isn't kept going the Island will die. Sowe just contribute help when6er help isneeded, and because of that and our willing-ness to support that kind of community Ithink we've been accepted as members ofthat community. On the music scene, I'd like to bounce some-thing off you. I've changed my attitudewith regard to Canadian performers producingfor the world market and feel that we shouldbe communicating with our own environmentand letting the rest of the world pick it uplater. What do you think?I think that's exactly what I am doing. Ibelieve that's what most of us are going tohave to do. Doing it the American way -exploding one area of music, obviously doesn'twork and it's proven itself a couple of timesover. Financially it works. A lot of peopleget very rich butt think it tends to eventuallydeprive the nation, culturally. You have ahuge explosion there, then you're going tokeep sucking the energy out of the otherfields to support it. If Canada keeps goingthe way it is, we'll be alright. One interest-ing thing about the Junos this year - did younotice how many of them went to folkartists? And I think that's kind of indicativeof the way it's going. Sure, there's rock androll and there were a lot of country Junosas well, but the pop music and the MORmusic and all of the copy music, if I maydare to say that. Maybe I shouldn't call itcopy music because it's original, but themotivation and inspiration and what nothave been here for years. But folk musicseems to be a little rougher, not as sophist-icated, and perhaps closer to the origins ofthe country itself. Maybe because of this

RPM 1811175 - - - 9

seeming preponderance of Junos that weregiven, away to folk music is indicative thatthat's the way Canada is going, musically. It could be a welcome change. Perhaps eventhe rock and rollers will adapt to this change.Remember, it was the folk music people whoplugged in their acoustic guitars and thatstarted the rock and rollin' too you know,How about touring - has it been restrictedto Canada? No, I've done three tours of the U.S. - oneextensive tour of seven states in the west -all universities. Then I went down and diddates in Oregon and Arizona - strictly flyin and out. Appeared with Gordon Lightfootin Oregon - kind of an opening act. Mostof these dates were little cow colleges, notthe big colleges and my we had a lot of thingsto do. Twenty-one colleges in nineteendays - just drivin' our asses off, back andforth.Did you find it rewarding? That one wasn't. There wasn't the feedback. They Weren't the people to give the energyback that we were giving out. Somethinglike - we played Massey Hall and there was alot of energy coming back from what wewere putting out and, you know, you reallydon't get tired out from a thing like that. But when you give and give and give andnothing comes back, obviously you're goingto deplete yourself. What made you move, to having a backupgroup?

Well, I'm kind of tired of playing with ,myself. I'd been doing it for two and ahalf years. While we were driving on thattour through Minnesota I said, well why .don't I play with Diamond Joe this timeand see what happens. So we pulled off ata truck stop and I called him in Calgaryand Joe thought it would be a good idea. His name is Joe White and his group isDiamond Joe. They flew out to my place inNewfoundland and we worked out during

'

an eighty-five mile an hour blizzard. It wasblowing when they got there. We had thestove goin' full bore and it was fairly warm ,and we put together this show. I had writtena few songs for it and we adapted some ofJoe and Dave's material and put togethera tight little show. We started out in Halifax, went through New Brunswick, playedConfederation Centre in Charlottetown, and right through to the west coast.Do you prefer acoustic instruments?I like electric guitar if it's laid back enoughthat you can still relate with acoustic instru-ments because it has a texture to it that'svery good to work with. If it's played witha great deal of taste and restraint, then itwill blend with the acoustic instruments. Then that's when I like it.You're obviously into the environmentaltrip - do you have a gripe against theCanadian government about any aspect ofit?

It's the only thing I can complain about, because from the mistreatment of the envir-onment, I think you tangent off into everyproblem that the government has both indus-trially and socially and therefore politically.Even financially, but that's through theindustrial aspect of it, I think. Canada stillhas a chance to stand up to some kind of anexample to the world. Someone wrote in theSan Francisco paper 'Come on Canada, holdon. We blew it down here but you still havea chance up there'. If we do manage to main-tain ourselves - contain ourselves fromabsolutely debauching this fine land wegot, then perhaps it will be an example for

other people, and the world might do quitewell by it. But once again that becomes apolitical issue because of the industrialaspect of it.Have you written about it?A couple of things but not too much. That'sgoing to come though, I'm working on some-thing about the McKenzie Valley pipeline.Have you written about your new home?I wrote one song about Arnold's Cover, whichwas a re -settlement project. It was on the "B"side of my record but it was considered the"A" side in Newfoundland because it meansmore to them. The other side was 'Landscapes',which was written basically about Winnipegwest - about travelling and friends and whatnot.

How come it took Valdy so long to becomeknown across Canada?

Actually I'd been recording on the west coastfor four years and playing out there forseven. On the west coast there is a northand south communication link and we don'tget across to the east here at all. It's very sadin some ways because it's forced Vancouverto become concentric in its musical circlesbecause it could expand and absorb from alot of Canada. But the mountains seem tolock it up there.

Don't you find that most of the complainersfrom the west coast are originally from theeast?

Yes - escapees, refugees. The east is reallyfast. In Toronto I see people running toestablish a pace of life, that'they're goingto have to run to keep up with. And it'svalid. Obviously it works. Look at NewYork. Everyone's making a lot of moneyin New York so as far as that's concerned,it works. But I'm wondering what it's doingto the temperment of the city, and if perhapsa slight retardation in the speed of it, mighthelp. How does this whole thing about identitystrike you?I think it's something being fomented bythe national government in order to tiethe country together. I'm not saying it's abad thing. I think it's good, but it's the sametype of thing the State Department in theUnited States would be raising their flag for- in order to tie their country together.Canada is a vastly different place - thewest, central, the prairies, the east. There'sa thousand miles of mountains, a thousandmiles of prairies, a thousand miles of lakesand a thousand miles of woodlands - and thatmakes up Canada. I've seen it coast to coast,.about five times - driving, flying, training, and it's a big big place, and to tie it togetherwith some kind of national spirit is, I'msure, a difficult task, and the government

seems to be undertaking it rather well. There'sposters out advertising Newfoundland in B.C.and vice versa.

Can you forsee any major problems inCanadian music?

I haven't run across any real problems yet.I can see a problem coming, in that theAmericans came up here, and it was particu-larly evident at your Juno Awards this year. The American industry has come up intoCanada and established branch offices andused the same hypes and the same formatfor the operation of their businesses hereas they do down in Hollywood and in NewYork. And it's not working for them here, and that kind of frustration, could be aproblem. Because it might lead to total indif-ference or else bigger and better attempts atthe American way of the business in therecord industry. Canada functions totallydifferent. The companies, it seems that cameup with the creative awards this year were thelaid back companies. True North got some-thing. A&M got something and both in theinnovative field that seemed to be where theirhonours were coming. And their approach istotally different, than the American approach. It seems to be something unique to Canada,or unique to the area where our particularbusiness is going on and I don't know if it's'Canada. If we can retain that, it will be good.If we don't, I can see a problem coming outof the infiltration of that great propagandamarket.

There's much more to Valdy than justthese few hundred words. He could becomea legend in his own time, in fact he's almostthere. As we parted I asked him if he hadany fears of being witness to some of thetragedies of the sea - now that he was livingon the east coast. He left me with "Indeed.I remember during the big blow I was tellingyou about. There was one million threehundred thousand barrels of crude oil sittingoff the coast of Woody Island - four supertankers - sittin' there with their big hookson the bottom. Just sittin' there, fat withoil, eighty-one feet under the water. Theyheld, of course. They're not going to one ofthese days, and I'm afraid of it". WG

BTO look like they lead the race in albumrecords in Canada. Allan Katz of Polydorwants to certify 160,000 sales of their latestalbum and unless they are challenged byanyone who is willing to certify a figureabove that ... that will make BTO thebiggest sellers in the shortest period of timeof any group or artist in Canada. Add to thatrecord three certified Gold Leaf Awardsand two certified Platinum Awards anda Gold single. No group in the history ofCancon can challenge that (and if they do,it's too late!!!) Charlie Fach must be thehappiest record man in the business.

The Golden Handle that hangs in the officeof a noted programmer is an indication of thememos that he grinds out to run a stationthat all but misses mention in the BBM ina very metropolitan area of Canada.

Very soon the FM regulations will be handeddown by the CRTC. There is already specu-lation that the music ruling portion of thenew regulations will make interestingreading for broadcasters. FM stations will berequired to play as much as 30% Canadiancontent (according to their format) and

other stations will be levied with a lowerpercentage if their programming is of aunique quality where Canadian content isnot readily available. The CRTC stressed intheir FM proposals that they wanted to seeFM graduate to a more professional leveland the intellectual level of FM broadcastingwill have to be raised to offer an alternativeto AM broadcasting. This seems to be theCRTC's aim and probably will be reflected inthe new regulations.

It's a concept album, which Britishgroups are continually laying on us andwhich are effecting necessary and pleasantchange. Having received much excited press from theusually dry music critics, this album isalmost guaranteed a huge sales return. Fifty-two minutes of the classic work of KahlilGibran with musical interpretation by ArifMardin and a vocal dignity that only RichardHarris could supply, has created a master-piece that was actually eight years in themaking. Word praise is superfluous - it's theimpact on your ear and grey matter that willbe the convincing factor.

It's the soul that counts and there's nothinglike the professional kind that only theSpinners are capable of. Solo or in harmony, the Spinners sparkle. Tag it an old - or a newsound, it's still the Spinners and always awinning combination that oozes listenerappeal. Jerry Jeff has changed a lot since the daysof "Mr. Bojangles". There's an agreeablebluesy edge to his voice now and he doesfull justice here to a collection of earthy, uncomplicated tunes starting with thepunchy "Salvation Army Band", movingthrough the New Orleans sounding "I LikeTo Sleep Late in the Morning" to "My OldMan", a touching lament. Experienced "bad pressings"???(The following item of interest was in-cluded in Larry Wilson's CHUM FM 630Report for Jan 3/75 - reprinted herewithwith his permission. -Ed)

Got a record for Christmas. Great. Lovethe group. Looking forward to hearingtheir new material. Can't play it. It's gota warp in it that makes the arm jump allover the illace. Or, a clamp has been ap-plied to the edge when the vinyl was hot, leaving an ear -wrenching noise all overthe first cut. Or, the centre hole is off-centre. Or, too big. Or, there's this canyondug into the surface of your favourite cut,and it's unplayable for that reason. All these things have happened, not onlyover this Christmas period, but for years. For the most part, we can't inspect re-cords in the store. They're factory sealedfor our protection. And, notice? as theprices go up the quality goes down. For our five, seven, nine or fifteen dol-lars, we're getting: disappointment, anger,

the hassle of having to take it back, theexplanation business at the store, and soforth. Who needs it!I'm not saying that this happens everytime you buy a record. Or every othertime, but there is a strong suspicion thatrecord quality is definitely not up topar. Besides the gouges and warps andoff-centre holes what about therecords that come out just sounding aw-ful distorted, noisy, what have you. We'd like to get some case histories inhand - complaints, and if they're forth-coming, accolades for the Canadian recordpressing industry. The aim of it all is to beable to make a case for better quality con-trol, so that in the future, if the recordcompanies see that there is a major prob-lem (if indeed there is a major problem)that they will find it in their interests tocorrect it.If the quality problem is as bad as wegather, maybe the old strength-in-nurn-bers strategy can correct it.

CFVR RECEIVINGSTRONG SUPPORTNumerous major and independent recordcompanies have been providing "eXcellent"support to CFVR, Abbotsford, B.C. in itsattempt to restore a measure of creativityto the AM airwaves. Rick Dennis, host ofthe informally programmed "Rick's Place"has special words of praise for the serviceprovided by Quality, MCA, London, Polydor,A&M, Axe, Mushroom, Capitol, Daffodil/Island, RCA and GRT. Dennis attributesmuch of the record company interest inCFVR's programming to contacts made atthe Communications 9 meet held in Vancou-ver last fall.

CFVR's imaginative programming concepts, covered at length in previous issues of RPM,continue to make the station one of the frontrunners among western outlets. Among spec-ial features recently aired are a "live" PaulHorn set, a special feature on Herbie Han-cock in CFVR's regular weekly jazz slot anda ninety minute special on ColUmbia'sSantana.

The gtation has been growing in other direc-tions too, since the addition of Peter Alpen, formerly of CKWX, Vancouver, to the salesstaff. Sales of spots on CFVR's eveningprograms are now at a peak.
