Step up your quilting fun with our fresh, cheerful sampler quilt. Prints and florals from the Jane Austen at Home collection by Riley Blake Designs make this quilt a joy to create. Whether you choose the gorgeous fabrics shown here, find new favorites at your local quilt shop, or dig into your own stash, you’ll be anxious to begin each part!

Starting Your Series QuiltThe pattern and videos are sequenced to build on skills. As you stitch each block, you’ll gain skills useful for the next. However, feel at liberty to work in an order you please, leaving the assembly for the last.

The parts 2-7 provide instructions for making the blocks. The final part includes instructions for assembling and finishing your quilt.

Cutting instructions for block patches aregiven with each block pattern.

Be sure to use an accurate G˝ seam allowance throughout, so all elements of the quilt fit together well.

The fabulous border panel from the Jane Austen at Home Collection by Riley Blake Designs was reproduced from the actual Jane Austen quilt. The panel print is not quite long enough for the quilt center, but we didn’t let that stop us!

Using two panel sets and a clever pin-matching technique, you can extend the border prints to the length needed. Make sure you check out the video to watch Kate Colleran step out the technique!

Northanger AbbeyJane Austen wrote Northanger Abbey in 1803, but it wasn’t published until after her death in 1817.

The story plays on the popular gothic novels of the time. The main character, Catherine Morland, sees herself as a heroine of such a shivery tale, and is blinded to what is really happening around her.

As a guest of wealthier friends, she trav-els to Bath, a popular spa destination of the era, and is later invited to Northanger Abbey under false assumptions.

Far from the eerie gothic adventure she’d imagined, her time at Northanger Abbey is nonetheless fraught with complications.

The intrigues and gossip that swirl around Catherine are similar to the logs that surround the red center of the Log Cabin block. Whether building a tale of darkness, or a tale of light, some fundamental skills are in order.

Pride & PrejudicePerhaps Jane Austen’s best-known, best-loved novel, Pride & Prejudice centers around clever Elizabeth Bennet’s less-than-smooth romance with the arrogant Fitzwilliam Darcy. Their relationship—which does not begin well—slowly alters as the characters themselves grow.

Complications of class, the intrigues and foibles of family and friends. and the un-comfortable truths of pride and prejudice make this novel a delight to read. Mrs. Bennet—Elizabeth’s meddling, social-climbing mother—would be well-pleased by the Jacob’s Ladder quilt block. It has a distinct upward path—from one end of the block to the other. With three of the four-patch units solidly on the path, and two on the outside (danc-ing with red coats, perhaps?), it mirrors Mrs. Bennet’s delight, at the end of the novel, in having three daughters married.

Sense & SensibilityIn Sense & Sensibility, Jane Austen’s first published novel, two sisters embody very different characters, but they experience equal measures of heart-ache, tumult, and, ultimately, romantic redemption.

The older, sensible Elinor Dashwood is practical. The younger, emotional Marianne is passionate.

Denied the home and inheritance they deserve, they make the most of their circumstances, and learn lessons that enable them to grow as women.

The Pinwheel Star showcases two floral fabrics—a white print that is cheerful and wholesome and a brown print that is old-fashioned and dramatic. It’s up to you to say which fabric is Marianne and which is Elinor, but the way the units complement one another is downright sisterly.

EmmaEmma was the last novel Jane Austen saw published in her lifetime and it’s surprising that the tone is so bright!

Unlike Austen’s other novels, the main character, Emma, is an only child. She is beautiful, clever, well-intentioned, rich... and entirely too used to having her own way.

Events conspire to reveal that there’s more to the world than Emma’s will. And It’s up to Sir John Knightley to show her the truth.

The entire neighborhood of Highbury revolves around Emma, dancing to the tune she sets. The Pinwheel Galaxy block is as complex as Emma herself—and the dance and tune are delightful.

PersuasionPersuasion is a novel of second chances.

As a young woman, Anne Elliot turned down Frederick Wentworth’s proposal of marriage, based on the advice of her friends and pressure from her family.

Angry he left her, and as the years passed, others moved on with their lives, while Anne faded...

Until Wentworth showed up again, a successful sea captain with a promising career, relative wealth, and a determina-tion to prove his heart was unbruised.

The Birds in the Air block features chop-py triangles—waves that could capsize any courtship. But the solid character of Anne—the love she kept, even while she thought it lost—holds a steady course

Mansfield ParkFannie Price is a poor relation, fostered at Mansfield Park to be brought up to a ‘better class’ of people. She certainly is exposed to finer things and educated at a higher level, but her story shows that all the cleverness, sophistication, and glitter in this elegant world are inferior to a steadfast heart.

Mary and Henry Crawford, siblings visit-ing from glittering London, charm the Bertram family with their sophistication; they all flit about like the triangles in this Chevron block. Meanwhile, Fannie Price remains steadfast as the strip sets in this block. It’s this backbone of strips that provides a subtle frame in the overall quilt design—so don’t take it for granted!

SanditonThe last of Jane Austen’s works, Sanditon, was never completed.

A young woman named Charlotte Hey-wood is invited into a dynamic, burgeon-ing new world—the beachside develop-ment of Sanditon.

In a few short chapters, Charlotte’s clear-eyed perspective allows us to catch glimpses of a wider world seldom found in Jane Austen’s novels.

We meet some interesting new char-acters, such as a West Indian heiress, a young man bent on seduction, and the commercial interests of a Regency-era land speculator.

In 2019, BBC produced a limited televi-sion series based on Sanditon. In a testa-ment to Austen’s skill at characterization, the writers of the series could glean the motivation, personality, conversational style, and probable course of action of each person from just a few, crystalline paragraphs, allowing the story to unfold a little bit more. To that end, in this lesson, you’ll learn how to adapt a remarkable border panel, adding length to make it fit your quilt. With a print that’s as well-designed, as Austen’s characters, you can achieve much more than you might think!

Borders & Binding Cutting Instructions Due to the length needed, you’ll need to cut the inner and outer borders, as well as the binding, first to ensure you have enough fabric for all pieces. Cut in order listed, then label and set aside for Part 8.Brown medium floral 11 strips 2H˝ x width of fabric (WOF) for binding 2 strips 2H˝ x 76H˝, pieced from 4 WOF strips, for inner border 2 strips 2H˝ x 72H˝ , pieced from 4 WOF strips, for inner borderBorder panel print* 2 strips 10˝ x 100˝, one for top and one for bottom, pieced from 2 Top Border and 2 Bottom Border panel strips 2 strips 10˝ x 100˝, one for each side, pieced from 2 Left Side Border and 2 Right Side Border panel strips*If you do not wish to use the panels, cut and piece 4 strips, 10” x 100”, from the print of your choice for your top, bottom, and side borders.

NOTE: Border panel strips include extra length for mitering.

Assembling the Quilt TopNOTE: Refer to the Assembly Diagram for following steps. Watch placement and orientation throughout.

Page 24

1 Arrange and sew 4 rows of six 12˝ blocks each. To make center sec-tion, sew together four 12˝ blocks for each side of center (Pinwheel Galaxy Block). Sew block rows and center section together.

2 Stitch brown floral 72H˝ strips to sides; trim even with top and bottom. Stitch brown floral 76H˝ strips to top/bottom.

3 To extend border print for sides, you will need to join a Left Side Border panel strip to a Right Side Border panel strip. Identify a mirror image repeat, and lay strips together, right sides facing. Pin-match motifs, mark the join with a stitching line, and sew. Check to ensure join is visually seam-less before pressing seam, then trim side panel strip to 10” x 100”. Repeat for other side strip.

4 To extend border print for the top and bottom, you will need to join a Bottom Border panel strip to a Top Border panel strip. Identify a mirror image repeat, and lay strips together, right sides facing. Pin-match motifs, mark the join with a stitching line, and sew. Check to ensure join is visually seamless before pressing seam, then trim top panel strip to 10” x 100”. Repeat for bottom panel strip.

NOTE: For tips on extending your border

print through pin-matching, watch the “Sanditon—Borders & Assembly” video.

5 Match center of one border print strip to center of one side of quilt. Sew strip to quilt top starting and stopping ¼” from corners, backstitching at each end. Do not trim excess. Press seam allowance toward border. Add remaining border strips in the same manner.

6 With right sides facing, fold quilt top in half diagonally. Open seam allowance in one corner, and align ruler along di-agonal fold. Mark from a stitching line from seam to seam. Stitch on line, backstitching at beginning and sewing to raw edge. Trim seam allowance to ¼”. In same manner, miter remaining corners.

Quilting & Finishing7 Layer, baste, and quilt. Donna Smith

of Quilted for You used the Dakota Snowflake, Double Feather Wreath, Paisley Flourish, Blosom Vine, and Cotton Sprig motifs in the quilt (all available through QuiltingDaily.com). She also outlined the diamonds in the border panel print, which gives the illusion that the diamonds are pieced.
