Celebrating 25 Years 33

A Quarter of a Century…When we began talking

about having a lighting display in 1995 no one in those discussions envisioned what Rotary Lights would look like 25 years later. It was something we were going to “try”. We collected a little over 13,000 food

items our first year and here we are celebrating our 25th year and we’ll be crossing over the 4 million mark. The 14 food pantries we supply are extremely grateful and the Hunger Task Force truly appreciates the help.

Everyone always wants to know “what’s new” for this year. Thanks to a special committee that was formed to help us plan for the 25th, we can report the following:

• Watch for a new 50 ft. tree on the bluff that from this point forward will always kick off the season and let everyone know it is time for Rotary Lights.

• See if you can find the new wolf howling at the moon.• We have expanded our free hay rides from 3 nights to

7 nights. Check the ad in this program.• We instructed the Skyrockers to give us a spectacular

show on opening night• Special songs have been written and many new items

offered in the Gift Shop.• We have all new LED lights on the entire north end

of the park.• Ever want to see Rotary Lights from the air? See the

ad for information on the helicopter rides. The perfect holiday gift.

• Mike Martino is preparing a special snow sculpture• Thanks to Steve Earp and his crew from SSE Music,

we have expanded the entire entertainment schedule for the Ice Castle.

• On January 25th, 2020 we’ll wrap up our 25th Year with a celebration at the La Crosse Center. Everyone is invited.

The extra time and effort that T.A. Slabach, Derk Olson, Steve Klankowski and Zach Tudahl put into the

new display for the bluff is pure dedication. Hundreds of hours to create a new icon for RL. We’re blessed to have these folks involved.

On behalf of the Stephens Family, my fellow Rotarians in La Crosse Rotary East, La Crosse Downtown, Valley View Rotary, After Hours Rotary, La Crescent, Caledonia, Onalaska, Holmen, and Onalaska Hilltopper Rotary Clubs, along with a very dedicated Board of Directors and Steering Committee, and over 3,000 community volunteers, please accept best wishes for a safe and happy holiday season.

Irish holiday hugs,

Pat Stephens-President

Celebrating 25 Years 5

Rotary Lights is sponsored by area Rotary Clubs who, in turn are part of an international service organization. That organization is built on providing humanitarian aid, fostering high ethical standards, and promoting peace and goodwill throughout the world.

Any project or activity is based on the Four Way Test, questions on which Rotary decisions are based:

Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? As Rotary Lights entered the planning stages, these questions

were addressed. Out of those discussions came the decision to collect food for hunger agencies and money for participating non profits. The questions were the basis for creating Rotary Lights as a free-to-the-public event.

Rotary does more that light up Riverside Park between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. You may recognize some of these projects, all of which Rotarians have played a part in organizing, fundraising, and labor:• Kids Coulee • Myrick Hixon Ecopark• Trees for Tomorrow • International Gardens• Chad Erickson Park • Riverside Band Shell • Fight the Flood

On an international level, Rotary provides exchange programs for high school students, works tirelessly to eradicate polio, seeks ways to provide clean water, and much more.

Feeding the VolunteersEach year, there are just over 3,000 volunteers who help make Rotary Lights possible. To help us feed this army of big hearted souls, we asked some of our local food vendors to provide lunches, beverages and snacks to keep our troops moving. On behalf of all the volunteers we extend a very sincere thank you for helping us out. This is another great example that we live in a very special community.
