John Griffiths 2E0XER SK

It is with deepest regret that I never thought I would be writing this. I just wanted to share with you all some of my happy memories of John, who sadly passed away on 2

nd

January 2012 following a long battle with cancer.

I first met John in July 2003 at the Welland Steam Fair near Malvern. He was tootling around the display arena in his Ferret armoured scout car and I was so mesmerised by the spectacle that myself and my (young daughter then) Harriet decided to approach John and his wife Anne to ask them the usual questions. He was very knowledgeable. We decided that we had to get one and, sure enough, my Ferret was

bought and I was able to race around the enclosure behind John. We have been good pals ever since.

Of course, with the vehicles came the radios and neither of us really had any clue how to operate them, and for that matter we didn't have a licence. We agreed that we should be legal and so joined the Worcester Radio Amateurs Association (WRAA) and eventually achieved our licences.

Things, radio-wise didn't stop there, and we could often be seen collecting that bit or thingy from scouring the militaria stalls or ebay. John has an impressive collection of military hardware that would have made GCHQ envious.

It didn't take much encouragement to get John into any one of his favourite hostelries in and around Worcestershire. John would often regale tales to me of his past and he never failed to recount some humorous and some not so funny stories from his early employment period, stationed at Halley Bay in Antarctica with the British Antarctic Survey team during the 1950's. For instance, he was present when some crew members fell through the ice and another member got separated on a floating ice pack never to be seen again. And the way that camera film would not develop properly, not because of the extreme temperature but because of the water they were using.

He had his comical side too, such as when he had left Antarctica and returned to Blighty, unemployed. At his interview at the Labour Exchange they asked him what qualifications he had, and he simply replied, "dog-sled driver"! There wasn't much call for that work around at the time.

John later joined the Army as a gunner in the Royal Artillery and rose to the rank of Captain. He must have learned his skill in getting people to do what he wanted them to do well, because in civvy life he retained the knack of not only making you comply but willingly! If John wanted it done, it got done and it got done right!

John was a really good friend to me, and I miss him already. He never said, but he made me feel like a son to him. I'm currently at a loss to figure out what I'm going to do to fill the enormous void that his passing has created in my life. I could count John amongst the very close best friends I have met and he never let me down. John taught me a lot and I will be eternally grateful for knowing him. I consider myself and my future life richer for having known such a kind and special friend, who never had a bad word to say about anyone.

Jem Carvill 2E0JEM

[A number of tributes to John were posted on the VMARS Reflector and all echo sentiments from Jem above Ed]

Revision of EU EMC Directive

In the last News Sheet we reported on planned changes to the EU EMC Directive which may impact on interests of VMARS Members and amateur radio operators in general. In the event, it appears that the key concern over our continued freedom to use ‘kits’ is no longer as critical as was initially thought, because the relevant paragraph had been moved rather than deleted. Peter Chadwick G3RZP who originally raised concerns about the Revision, makes the following additional observations.

I can confirm that the section on ‘kits’ has been moved, but the other somewhat worrying section is the modification e5 on page 21.

(e5) ‘electromagnetic disturbance’ means any electromagnetic phenomenon which may degrade the performance of equipment, including electromagnetic noise, an unwanted signal or a change in the propagation medium itself.

The question is how an unwanted signal is classified. For example, interference from 80 m AM to a telephone is caused by an 'unwanted signal'; although Ofcom do not handle such cases officially, an office or business having unacceptable interference to the internal telephone system may well use that 'unwanted signal' as being something that needs stopping by legal means.

In the previous News Sheet .there included an appeal for Members to write to their MEPs to express concerns about the proposed changes. The following is the text of a letter which was sent by Mark Elliot G8SAR:

“I have been an Radio Amateur Licence holder for the last 30 years and have an interest in building, restoring and operating all types of radio equipment both ancient and modern.

I regularly use modified ex-military radios and modified commercial radios as used at one time by taxi companies and the Emergency Services.

The whole point of the radio amateur licence is to experiment and educate under controlled and reasonable grounds and requires a City and Guilds qualification in order to obtain a transmitting license.

I am a radio amateur not because I am a buy it off-the-shelf operator, but because I, like many others, like to educate myself through self- education and experimentation.

I have, like many fellow amateurs, invested a great deal of time and money in purchasing and learning to use test equipment in order that I do not cause any interference to other users.

As part of the New Legislative Framework (NLF) Alignment Package, the European Commission is reworking some directives.

One of the affected directives is the EMC directive.

There are two important changes which, if carried, will very much affect British radio amateurs.

1. The sentence "Kits of components to be assembled by radio amateurs and commercial equipment modified by and for the use of radio amateurs are not regarded as commercially available equipment." is to be deleted in the new version. That would render kits and modified equipment to be fully subjected to the EMC directive!

2. The definition of the term 'electromagnetic disturbance' will include the wanted signal of a radio as a possible source. This is not in line with the Radio Regulation of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and not in line with the vocabulary of the International Electrotechnical Committee (IEC).

These two changes in the EMCD are neither in line with the reasoning of the New Legislative Framework, nor do they help to improve protection of radio services or equipment.”

Mark also has sent us the following reply he received from Liz Lynne MEP:

Thank you for your email. I understand that the European Commission will present the proposal and impact assessment on the recast of the Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive 2004/108/EC in the European Parliament's Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) Committee on 9

th January 2012.

I am not a member of the IMCO Committee but I have been liaising with my colleagues in the European Parliament regarding your concerns. I am told that the recast was meant to be a technical dossier to align this and nine other technical harmonisation directives with 2008 common framework for the marketing of products. I am also told that work will start on this from January and your concerns will be passed on to our shadow rapporteur, as soon as this has been decided, so they can be taken into consideration.

If you are not doing so already, it may be advisable to follow developments via the IMCO Committee pages on the European Parliament website. A link can be found here: http://www.europarl.europa.eu/committees/en/IMCO/home.html;jsessionid=9CA19F108CA7284567B178A428444B8F.node1

Top Band activity

For the attention of Members whose equipment can go down to 160 m.

There is a move by several amateurs to promote the use of AM on Top Band.

The frequency is 1977 kHz ± QRM, every evening, with calls put out and monitored especially at the top of the hour. The conditions are at their best during these winter months.

FOR SALE: Fundamentals of Radio and Electronics by

W.L.Everitt. Published second edition 1958.

In near mint condition, beautifully bound and with gilt edged pages, it is embossed with the Royal Air Force emblem and the words Royal Air Force Locking which, I am sure, you know was the RAF Radio School. It contains excellent technical information on the 1950's state-of-the-art on radio and TV, complete with pull out circuit diagrams. I would like to see it go to someone who would make good use of it. The price could be agreed and would be reasonable for such a fine book.

I also have a book called "The True Road to Radio". The book appears to have been written for, or published by, Ferranti. It is the third edition published in 1931. This book is nowhere near as pristine as the previous, and its condition reflects its 80 year age. However, it is complete and contains much technical information on radio, including detailed mathematics, circuit diagrams, monochrome photos of the radio equipment of that age etc., but it would certainly be of interest to historians of radio or even people who wish to reconstruct radios from the 1930s.

FREE to good home: I have a signal generator "oscillator,

test, No1" from the 1950's with its manual. Manual is dated 1956. I powered it up when I bought it about 4 years ago and it appears to work on 240 V OK. I tested it against a Fluke meter and it operated OK but calibration was a little out, but not far. There appears to be a complete set of leads which fit into the lid.

This is a typical Army field unit in a weather-proof case. I originally bought it for the case but have not used it and it's too good to take to the dump so I am happy to let it go to one of your Members who can make good use of it. Collect from Bookham Surrey, about 4 miles from M25 J9.
