Several years ago we were vacationing in the Jungfrau region of the Swiss Alps. My sons
decided that we needed to hike up the moun-tain and find the source of the waterfall that fell just outside of our cabin. Up to this point, my conditioning for high elevation trekking had involved brisk walks through old European cities looking for the best ice cream shops.
We had a map that indicated where the trail started and approximately how many kilome-ters it was to our destination. What I failed to take into account was that the summit was not only 6 kilometers away, but it was also 800 meters higher up. Three hours into our two hour hike I came to the conclusion that if I wanted to see the view from the summit, I would need to purchase a picture post card from the souvenir shop. I told my wife and sons to continue climbing without me and to pick up my body on the way back down. Immediately my wife graciously pretended to be too tired to continue on as well, so she and
I started heading back down together.
After going a few steps down, we heard our sons encouraging us to climb back up, “only 50 more meters.” With their encouragement and enthusiasm pushing us on, we climbed up the final distance. Then they told us to turn around, and I saw one of the most beautiful mountain sceneries I have ever witnessed, one that I would have missed because I quit just a little too soon.
There are times when each of us feels like giving up hope, not because we haven’t tried, but because we feel too tired to carry on. Our heartfelt desire is show the love of Christ by giving hope through tailored living for those living with dementia. We are also reminded of the Lord’s gracious promise in Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Encourage each other today. We are excited to announce the opening of a new memory care program at Waterford Place.
Waterford Place Memory Care will change what it means to live with dementia. We are passionate
about life, and we want our residents to feel the same way.
Waterford Place residents will enjoy activities that combine movement, art, and music with cognitive exercises shown to increase their joy and sense of purpose in life. For people living with dementia, that’s often overlooked.
Not here.
Our team recognizes each resident as an individual with unique interests and needs, and develops a tailored program to match. Therapy, fitness, and diet play an essential part in helping residents rediscover
the world around them. A world where they can participate and enjoy life.
Throughout the Waterford Place community we rely on our trusted compass: 1 Cor. 12, which teaches us that we are all richer when we celebrate everyone’s God given gifts.
At Waterford Place, hope for dementia is here
This vision for others has inspired a ground breaking approach to serving adults with dementia.
Waterford Place, formally a 5 star Rehab facility, has partnered with SAIDO Learning, an innovative and proven treatment for individuals with Dementia, to develop a program that is not simply providing good care, but reversing and slowing the progress of the disease, and thus improving quality of life (Kawashima, R; et al., 2015).
This innovative approach to care reunites families with loved ones previously lost to the ravaging effects of dementia.
Waterford Place will be doing more than providing peace and security for adults and families managing dementia, it will be offering treatment and setting individual goals for improvement.
What is the treatment?SAIDO Learning is a non-pharmaceutical interven-
tion that is proven to reverse and prevent memory loss in older adults with cognitive impairments.
SAIDO Learning has been practiced in the U.S., since 2010. Empirical research indicated that residents who participate have shown marked improvement (Kawashima, R; et al., 2015). They are more engaged in daily activities, they eat well and are more socially engaged with caregivers, family and friends, and gener-ally are more optimistic about life and daily living.
Who can benefit?An individual with any form and/or stage of demen-
tia including Alzheimer’s disease (other than alcohol/induced dementia) can benefit from this therapy.

How long will it take to see the results? Are the changes permanent?
Whether great or small, we’ve seen positive changes within the first month of participation. Improvements resulting from participation are likely to continue through the duration of the adult’s sessions.
How does SAIDO Learning work?
The SAIDO Learning method involves a caregiver (called a “Supporter”) trained to work with two older adults (called “Learners”) by engaging them in a series of precise, yet simple, arithmetic, writing and reading exercises. The exercises are performed five times per week and last 30 minutes, in order to stimulate the prefrontal cortex of the brain. The object of the therapy is not to teach the material but to engage the learner in the accomplishment of repeated successful exercises, progressing to new material at the Learner’s own level and pace. This process fosters confidence and the ability and initiative to advance. Most notable, the result is an improvement in cognitive function.
