Chad Barkes – Assistant Principal I was born and raised in Yakima Washington, graduating high school in 1995. I moved to Salem in 1996 and have been in the valley since then. I started my career in Salem Keizer School district in 2000 as an instructional assistant at Swegle Elementary. After working as an instructional assistant for 3 years, I earned my teaching degree with a focus on special education from Western Oregon University in 2003. I taught at West High School in the Special Education Department for several years, then moved into the role of Special Education Program Assistant for 9 years. I was the assistant men’s soccer coach at Sprague High in 2001.I’ve been at Sprague High as an administrator since 2015, I have been happily married since 1999 and have 3 boys who attend schools in the Salem-Keizer School District. In my free time I enjoy playing sports, spending time with my family and friends and finding new ways to challenge myself.
Zachary Kramer – Mathematics Zach Kramer recently moved with his family (wife Amanda, two daughters Tess, age 4 and Evie, age 3 and two dogs Schroeder and Lucy) to Salem from Burlington, Vermont. For 15 years Zach taught math at Colchester High School, in Colchester, Vermont. He also coached sports for 15 years, including xc skiing and track and field. Prior to working at Colchester High School, Zach graduated from Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, Vermont. Zach grew up in Stillwater, Minnesota, a town located about 20 minutes east of St.
Paul, Minnesota. Growing up Zach participated in soccer, xc skiing, cc running and track and field. He looks forward to getting to know the friendly people of Oregon as well as getting out to enjoy the beautiful landscape of the west coast.
Anne Sanders – Mathematics Hi! I’m Anne Sanders! This is my 4th year teaching. For the first three years I taught at a wonderful little school in the country, North Marion High School. I absolutely loved it there and miss it dearly, but Sprague is growing on me slowly. I have an awesome dog, Zorro, who is about 90 lbs. He and I enjoy hiking and cuddling on cold days. He is my sunshine and makes me smile at the end of a long day. Other than my dog, most of my time is devoted to my family and planning times to visit with them.I started my path to teach at Southwestern Oregon Community College in Coos Bay, OR. From there I received a two year degree, AAOT, and then transferred to Western Oregon University where I majored in math and minored in French. I stayed at Western and earn my Masters of Teaching there as well. I loved everything about my Western experience and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting more one on one time with their teachers.
Christopher Trammell – Social Studies I graduated from Sprague High School in 2007 and went on to graduate from Corban University with a degree in Education with a history focus. I played baseball at Corban for four years as well. After graduation I married my best friend (a former Saxon) and we moved to Jakarta Indonesia where we taught at an International Baccalaureate school for three
years. After returning from Indonesia I taught for one year at Salem Academy and then completed the circle by getting hired back here at Sprague. I am glad to be back in the Orange and Black and am teaching 20th Century Studies 1 and Honors World History as well as coaching freshmen football. Go Olys!

I also am endorsed in English/ Language Arts. I believe firmly in being a lifelong learner, and I am working on my reading endorsement from George Fox. One of my personal goals is to become fluent in Spanish. I have 4 amazing children; Elisabeth (15), Caleb (14), Noah (12) and Philip (11). Their sports and school activities keep me really busy. I love to travel. I want to see the world, but most of my current traveling budget gets spent on visiting family and friends in Maine. I hope to teach in another country one day. I also enjoy; reading, hiking, shopping, and playing games with my children. I have a cat named Katniss, after the heroine in the Hunger Games. The only things she volunteers for are taking naps and eating treats.

CLUBS Business Students Practice Real-World Marketing Skills
This summer, business students Shanti Basu, Katie Andrews, and Dylan Norris had the opportunity to take their marketing and promotional skills from the classroom to a real-world community event, at the Salem River Rock summer concert series.
Working with local marketing firm NW Events & Marketing, the students participated in helping to market the event by handing out fliers, and visiting local businesses this past spring. At the concert events, they collected tickets and enthusiastically greeted concert attendees.
When asked about the experience, Shanti shared, “I always jump at the opportunity to apply the skills I’ve learned through DECA and Sprague’s business program, in the real world. Being part of a street team for the River Rock concert
series was exactly that kind of experience - a chance to work with some great people and see marketing, advertising, and public relations strategies at play, while getting to enjoy great music at the same time. It was such a cool experience!” Katie said, “The experience helped me with my customer service skills through talking with so many different people, and the concerts were absolutely amazing!” The concert lineup included popular performer, Andy Grammer, Celtic rock group, the Young Dubliners, and country band, Frankie Ballard, at Salem’s Riverfront Park amphitheater on Wednesday evenings in July.
Ms. Pollard, marketing and business teacher at Sprague, is always looking for ways to bridge the classroom
and workplace by giving students a chance to practice the concepts they learn in class. If you have a business project need that students may be able to assist with, please email [email protected].
¿Qué pasa?Spanish Club NewsThe new Sprague Spanish Club Officers have been busy planning an eventful year for the club. These dedicated students meet twice monthly to plan ahead for meetings. Their aim this year is to provide a stress-free, enjoyable environment for club members to meet fellow Spanish language and culture enthusiasts. At the October meeting, Ms. Lentz (club advisor) led the club in a rousing Day of the Dead game of
Kahoots! The club will also hold an afternoon Day of the Dead get together on Tuesday, November 3rd with activities, “Pan de Muerto” and other surprises.
Spanish Club also provides information about tutoring for Spanish students, travel opportunities to Costa Rica and Spain and the National Spanish Honor Society. Please join us on the second Tuesday

TAG students & their parents!Dear Parents:
We want to welcome you back to another exciting school year at Sprague High School!
Your child has been identified as talented and gifted here in Salem-Keizer Public Schools. At Sprague, we have over 300 TAG students…and we continue to identify students into their senior year. We believe that helping every student reach their potential is a mutual effort between the home, school and community. It is our hope that you will support us in the endeavor by being involved and informed about your child’s education
There are some new changes underway that will help us readily identify your TAG student. SYNERGY, the new grade system, identifies each TAG student by their area. This identification is easily readable, and underneath your student’s name in the attendance section of SYNERGY. By the beginning of October, all teacher will have identified their TAG students, received TAG training, and understand the importance of TAG plans and modifications.
All teachers will be writing Course Plans/TAG Considerations that describe the assessment tools used to determine the student’s rate and level of learning. Course Plans/TAG Considerations will also describe the assessment modifications that teachers intend to utilize in the course to accommodate the level and rate of learning for TAG students. We update the plans every year, and the binder is updated biannually.
This year, 2015, conferences will on the evening of Monday, November 23 and all day Tuesday, November 24th. Just let your child’s teachers know you would like additional time when the conference notifications come out in November.
One of the advantages that a TAG student has when they reach high school is the large number of advanced/honor courses that they may take to enhance their learning. This year there will be many opportunities for you and your child to become involved in school activities and enrichments. Please watch for our school newsletter which will keep you informed about all of the latest information.

ATHLETICS FootballVarsity/JV FootballThe 2015 football season has started out strong for the Sprague Olympians. Heading into a week 7 showdown with non-league opponent Grant the Oly’s are 16-2 as a program. The Varsity squad, lead by senior running back Anthony Nunn and offensive linemen Jacob Nelson, Bryce Webber, David Prosser and Ryan Morgan have been a force, leading the league in rushing yards again this season on the way to a 5-1 record.
Behind a talented but small senior group, the Oly’s have relied heavily on underclassmen to fill holes due to only having 16 seniors on this year’s squad. These underclassmen have been very productive under the Friday night lights and continue to show great improvement week in and week out. Combining this with a quality freshman team currently sitting at 5-1 with a single loss to Washington’s Union High School and an undefeated 6-0 JV team, the future looks bright for Oly Football.
Freshman FootballThe Sprague Olys Freshman Football team has a strong turnout this year, with over 55+ young men out and working hard to make themselves and their community proud. Many of the players on the team have been strongly committed to the team, working out 3 days a week over the summer and then enduring the hard preseason practice sessions that begun on August 17th.
The team has had a great start to our season by going 5-0 in the GVC up to this point, with our only loss coming by 2 pts. at the hands of Union HS, in Camas, WA in an exciting game. Please join us if you can and cheer on the Olys in one of their remaining games!

Boys Soccer
The Sprague Boys Soccer program has enjoyed a great season this year! The success is in
large part credited to our amazing
Administration staff including
Mr. Swanson, Mr. Chandler, and Mrs. Tracy Goranson. They schedule games, practices, buses, and keep us up to date. We want to thank the
Cheer squad and Choir teams for coming out to join us and showing great school spirit. We have averaged 150 fans for each home game! A big shout out to our school staff, students, families, and friends for supporting
us and cheering us on. Our team is young; however, we continue to grow in size and improve our skills as we successfully compete and play with some of the highest ranked teams in the State.

ATHLETICS
The Sprague Boys Soccer Program moto: To successfully provide a positive and rewarding experience for all players. Our key results for the season are to demonstrate Citizenship, Academics, and Sportsmanship. Our athletic goal is to compete for and win the Greater Valley Conference Championship on a yearly basis. We have been (for several years running) and will continue to rank in the top ten amongst all 6A schools in the state for academic GPA.
Players Wanted!! We are always looking to build our program. We would like to have you join us next season. Many of our players play soccer year round. However we also have many players who start playing for the first time in high school. Soccer is a great sport for cross training, to prepare athletes for other sports such as: Basketball, Lacrosse, Track, and Cross Country. Many colleges and university sports program head coaches look for players who are well rounded athletes; athletes who
have competed in several high school sports. We have
many athletes that have joined us after wanting to change from other sports
as well. We welcome you to come join us anytime to see if it’s a good fit for you.

COP TALKOctober is Crime Prevention Month. Here are two things you can do to prevent crime:1) Update all your passwords. There is no secret formula for how often one should change their passwords, but if you have never updated them, or it has been a while, then October is as good a time as any. Make passwords strong by including numbers, alternating cases, and special characters.
2) Make using locks a habit. Whether you are at home, or out and about reinforcing the habit of securing points of entry to your home or your car lessens the opportunity for crime to occur.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF A CONCUSSION
Assess the situation
Be alert for signs and symptoms
Contact a health care professional
What is a concussion?A concussion is a type of brain injury that changes
the way the brain normally works. A concussion is
caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head. Concussions
can also occur from a blow to the body that causes the
head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. Even what
seems to be a mild bump to the head can be serious.
Concussions can have a more serious eect on a young,
developing brain and need to be addressed correctly.
What are the signs and symptoms of a concussion? You can’t see a concussion. Signs and symptoms of
concussion can show up right after an injury or may not
appear or be noticed until hours or days after the injury.
It is important to watch for changes in how your child or
teen is acting or feeling, if symptoms are getting worse,
or if s/he just “doesn’t feel right.” Most concussions occur
without loss of consciousness.
If your child or teen reports one or more of the symptoms of
concussion listed below, or if you notice the symptoms
yourself, seek medical attention right away. Children and
teens are among those at greatest risk for concussion.

AVIDThe freshmen AVID Elective students were given the opportunity on October 2 to visit the AVID freshmen students at West Salem High School. Over the course of several hours, the students worked together, sharing strategies, experiences, and bonding. Later in the evening, the West Salem students attended the Sprague High School home football game, with the two schools joining together again for a picture on the 50 yard line and recognition from the crowd. All AVID freshmen were treated to complimentary popcorn thanks to the Sprague Booster Club. We look forward to continuing this tradition next year when we invite the West Salem students to Sprague.
This year we would like to welcome our new AVID Elective teachers, Mrs.
Gretchen Wunderlich-Hall with the freshmen class, Ms. Amy West with the sophomore class, and Mr. Chris Allen with the
seniors. As the AVID program at Sprague continues to grow and improve, we look forward to inviting more of our amazing teachers to become AVID Elective teachers.
Upcoming dates for the AVID program include the Hybrid SAT/ACT Scoreback Session during the evening on October 20, a trip for the sophomore and junior classes to Oregon State University on October 26 and the freshmen class visiting Willamette University on November 18. The University of Oregon will be visiting Sprague AVID seniors on November 12 for on-site free admissions.
Better known as CTECLife at CTEC is brimming with anticipation and excitement over a new program that is in a stratosphere all its own. It is often said, “We do things differently at CTEC,” and it is true. CTEC students feel it every day and appreciate the common thread that runs throughout the CTEC experience. This year CTEC offers curriculum in Manufacturing or Construction, coupled with Language Arts, Math and CAD. These subjects are integrated in a meaningful way allowing students to understand how systems work together to create a whole. It makes sense at CTEC why it is required for students to take math, CAD and Language Arts. They immediately see the relationship these subjects play in helping produce an item on the shop floor.
On October 9th CTEC held its dedication ceremony celebrating the September opening of this unique program within the Salem Keizer School District. Mr. Larry Tokarski of Mt. West Investments is responsible for having the dream of investing in the youth attending Salem-Keizer Schools. His dream resulted in the pairing of private and public entities with a passion for kids and their education, who then effectively collaborated developing a program that offers SK students opportunities to learn in a different style.
Next year CTEC will be expanding to include programs in Agri-Science and Cosmetology. Agri-Science will focus on horticulture of nursery plants and food production. Students will be required to take a language arts and science class at CTEC if enrolled in either of these programs. CTEC is offered to juniors and seniors who are on track academically with dependable attendance and no serious behavior issues.
CTEC has students from each of our 7 high schools who are excited to answer questions about this year’s program. Find them and explore the possibility of getting involved. School counselors are available to answer questions and you may always contact CTEC directly at 503-399-5511. Later this school year CTEC will start advertising for applicants for this next school year. If you are interested in exploring the possibility keep your eyes and ears open for more news.

*****Parents*****Have you heard the news? The InTouch system has been replaced by a new and improved program, ParentVue!
Synergy ParentVUE is a tool to help families stay informed about their student’s progress. This tool can be used to access your student’s grades, attendance information, and also to communicate with teachers. Students will have access to the same information using Synergy StudentVUE.
ParentVUE Activation letters were sent out by the district in September. If you did not receive a letter or have misplaced it, please call or visit the Sprague office and we can get your letter out for you.
StudentVUE is available to students in Grades 6 and above. Students will setup their password at school thru their computer logins. Students must set up their StudentVUE account at school before they can access it from home.
There is even a MOBILE APP for your smart phone. To login to the free ParentVUE/StudentVUE mobile app, download the ParentVUE application if you are a parent or download the StudentVUE application if you are a student. When prompted to enter the district URL, enter https://parent-salemkeizer.cascadetech.org/salemkeizer . Then log in with your user name and password.

How do I get my ParentVUE login information? Parents will be sent a letter with an activation key in mid-September. After parents get their letters they will be able to login.
I am a student. How do I login to StudentVUE? StudentVUE is available to students in Grades 6 and above. Students will setup their password at school.
How do I login to the ParentVUE/StudentVUE mobile app? To login to the free ParentVUE/StudentVUE mobile app, download the ParentVUE application if you a parent or the StudentVUE application if you are a student. When prompted to enter the district URL, enter https://parent-salemkeizer.cascadetech.org/salemkeizer/. Then login with your username and password.
I forgot my password. How do I reset my password? Parents have the ability to reset their own passwords. If you have forgotten your password, follow the below steps:
1. Click on the Login to ParentVUE/StudentVUE link on the top of this page
2. Click I am a parent >>
3. Under the username and password field, click on Forget your password? Click here.
4. Enter the email address you used to activate your account and click Send Email to be emailed your login information.
5. Students can work with their teachers after school begins if they need their passwords reset.
My account has been disabled. How do I re-enable my account? For security reasons, ParentVUE accounts are disabled if a password is entered incorrectly more than three times. To re-enable your account, please contact your student's school.
Can I use the same login for all my kids at Salem-Keizer Public Schools? Yes. Your ParentVUE login gives you access to information on all your kids enrolled at Salem-Keizer Public Schools. If you are not seeing one or more kid with your login, it can be an indication of a duplicate record for you in the system. Please contact your student's school (the student you are unable to see in ParentVUE) to fix this issue.
What does the Report Card module show? The report card module shows a student's final grade. This is not a replacement for mailed-home report cards.
