SPOTLIGHTHISTORY LESSON: THE TIMELINE OF SUCCESS

100 years ago in August of 1915, Dr. Charles H. Mayo, one of Mayo Clinic’s founders, and other members of the Rochester School Board voted to create the University Department, what would one day become known as Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC). No one could have predicted the great impact the School Board vote would have for the community’s future.

Minnesota’s oldest public two-year community college officially opened its doors on September 14, 1915 with a mere 17 students enrolled. Today, RCTC educates more than 6,000 students on the 518 acre campus that offers more than 70 different programs, 120 credential options, over 20 complete programs and 300 online course offerings. These programs lead to degrees including Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, Associate in Applied Science and Associate in Fine Arts. The college also offers diploma and certificate options.

Additionally, RCTC has a long-standing partnership with Winona State University and together developed the Path to Purple academic pathway providing students with the opportunity to complete their bachelor’s degree in Rochester. RCTC offers dozens of articulations with other colleges and universities.

The initial meeting that took place 100 years ago also formed a strong bond between RCTC and Mayo Clinic. According to an article by the Post-Bulletin in an interview with retired RCTC President Don Supalla, “I’ve heard it said that for every MD at Mayo, there’s 10 to 13 support people, and I would guess the vast majority of those support people have been educated at RCTC or its former institutions. What would Mayo be without the trained employees that they’ve received from all of public higher education but certainly RCTC. It’s great that Charles Mayo made the motion at the School Board, but to continue that partnership between [RCTC and Mayo Clinic] for a 100 years has been pretty amazing.”

CHANGE IMPACTS RCTC’S ADAPTATION AND CURRENT VISION

Historically, RCTC has undergone a multitude of reinventions. In 1996, the Rochester Community College and Riverland Technical College formally merged; however, prior to this, both entities went through changes adapting to relevant educational needs of the time.

With today’s vision to be a universal gateway to world class learning, RCTC is large enough to provide countless opportunities for students to take their experience beyond the traditional classroom, but small enough for students to immediately engage and become actively involved in the campus and throughout the community.

In their centennial year under the leadership of President Leslie McClellon, RCTC will launch a new strategic plan focusing on enhancing the region’s workforce. In addition, McClellon, who joined the college last year, is focused on providing leadership and vision for the college in order to move RCTC forward in partnerships, student success and scholarships.

“My most rewarding experiences at RCTC have been centered on student success. I participated in my first commencement last May as RCTC’s President and witnessed the students achieve their goals. Watching the students and their families on that evening is a great reminder at the end of the academic year of why we do what we do,” McClellon shared.

RCTC is credited with educating tens of thousands of students over the past 100 years, and over one thousand graduated this past May including 300 students achieving honors or high honors.

With McClellon’s professional experience in student affairs and support services, it is no surprise her drive for student success led her to making an impact for students at a presidential level.

“I attended Langston University and majored in psychology. Eventually, I began working for Langston University and loved higher education. Very early, I decided I wanted to be an administrator and then a president. The opportunity to impact an institution from a global perspective appealed to me. The opportunity to join an outstanding institution like RCTC is a tremendous opportunity and responsibility to shape the future of a community and region. This is an inspiration and challenge that I knew I wanted to be part of and influence,” McClellon declared.

A CENTURY OF EXCELLENCE WITH A GOLDEN FUTURE

With 100 years of history and a record number of enrollments this past year, RCTC is celebrating a century of providing accessible, affordable, and quality learning opportunities to serve a diverse and growing community.

RCTC is also excited about the future of Destination Medical Center and Journey to Growth. “Both of these initiatives bring an opportunity for the college to respond to the community’s needs,” McClellon said. “Partnerships and collaborations are key to the success of our students, and RCTC is deeply committed to working with these initiatives in order to provide the skilled workforce needed to support the growth of the region. Our dedicated passion for assisting students to become well-rounded, educated citizens is well worth the preparation and hard work of each employee at RCTC.”

Many RCTC graduates have become business owners, and many businesses are partners with the college. RCTC supplies their workforce, and also receives various levels of support from these businesses including the opportunity for students to have internships, scholarship donations and ambassadors for the college.

As RCTC continues to provide the community with an educated workforce while enhancing the progress of the city, “we are proud to provide productive citizens who support this city and enhance the brain trust and cultural experience we enjoy in Rochester,” McClellon added.

McClellon also recognized programming that the Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce has implemented to support the workforce and classroom connections. “The Chamber offers programming opportunities allowing RCTC to further engage area businesses and community organizations. These programming opportunities include: P-16 initiatives, leadership development, workplace development, and networking with business, education, governmental, and non-profit organizations. The Chamber is also an advocate at the local, regional and state level for education.”

“Additionally, the Chamber has served as a connection for the college by providing training for employees; opportunities to work with local, state and national legislators; as an ambassador for the college in the community; and a partner in many other ways,” McClellon said.

RCTC is a sponsor of the Chamber’s Full Circle Classroom event, a three-day workshop that bridges business and education communities to ensure a capable workforce. With the goal of connecting educators with area businesses, participants learn the job skills needed in today’s workforce and about workforce readiness issues. RCTC also sponsors the Chamber’s Day at the Capitol event, Community Matters series, the STEM Summit, the Martin Luther King Jr. breakfast and several other Chamber events.

CELEBRATING THE CENTENNIAL

The celebration surrounding RCTC’s centennial will support a central theme honoring RCTC as it was, what it is today and what it will become.

September’s homecoming week will kick off a yearlong series of events that will continue from 2015 into 2016.

The Founder’s Day event on September 17th will celebrate the college’s rich past and promising future. RCTC President Leslie McClellon will also be formally inducted as president.

The following day, the college will host a Centennial Scholarship Gala at the Rochester International Event Center. The gala will be RCTC Foundation’s biggest fundraiser of the year. The evening includes a silent auction, dinner, drinks, and live auction. The proceeds will benefit the RCTC Scholarship Fund and allow the RCTC Foundation to continue fostering student success.

“We are very excited for the opportunity to tell our story and celebrate our Centennial with Rochester and the surrounding area. We invite everyone to join in and enjoy celebrating this wonderful, once in a lifetime occasion with us. Thank you Rochester for 100 years. We appreciate your support and look forward to 100 more!” McClellon announced.

Breast cancer survivors, Effie Psimos and Patty Allen, along with their good friend Margie Loprinzi, came together ten years ago in 2005 with

the hope of raising breast cancer awareness in Rochester, MN. What began as passing a basket of scarves amongst breast cancer patients is now an established non-profit organization with many programs and services to support local breast cancer survivors.

Join the Journey’s mission is to promote breast cancer awareness and to support individuals on their breast cancer journey. Join the Journey raises awareness by being active in community outreach efforts to stress the importance of early detection and remind women to schedule their annual mammograms.

Join the Journey supports individuals at every stage of their breast cancer journey through a variety of programs that provide emotional support, relaxation and exercise for breast cancer survivors.

• Pink Ribbon Mentors are breast cancer survivor volunteers who offer one-on-one emotional and informational support to patients undergoing breast cancer treatment at Mayo Clinic.

• The Book Program provides the Mayo Clinic Breast Cancer Book to newly diagnosed breast cancer patients at Mayo Clinic and Olmsted Medical Center.

• The Breast Cancer Support Group for breast cancer survivors and the Caregivers Support Group for caregivers meets every first Wednesday of the month at Hope Lodge.

• Making Waves Floating Support Group paddles the dragon boat, “Waves of Hope.” Breast Cancer survivors and supporters are welcome to join in every Wednesday evening during the spring/summer.

• Survivors and supporters can also participate in our Winter Workout Program, enjoying exercises from Zumba to belly dance.

• Join the Journey also partners with the Mayo Cancer Education Program and local artist volunteers to offer a unique Creative Support Series program where local artists lead anyone in Gonda 10 Lobby who is interested from survivors waiting for appointments to caregivers waiting for a loved one through creative art projects such as scrapbooking and watercolor painting.

• The Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk is Join the Journey’s major event to raise awareness. The walk is held every third Sunday in September around Silver Lake. In 2014, approximately 1,000 people participated to honor breast cancer survivors and celebrate Join the Journey’s ten-year anniversary, raising about $100,000.

This year, the Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk will be September 20th and promises to be one of their best with a raffle, mini-massages, balloon art, children’s scavenger hunt, education booths, dragon boat rides, catered lunch by Catering by Design, music by the Booker Mini Foundation and two shuttle buses along the route. To register, please visit our website at www.jointhejourney.us.

A WORD OF ADVICE: EXPERT ARTICLES

As owners and operators of small businesses, we need to keep an eye on what tools are going to make our businesses successful with the least amount of cost and the most amount of the efficiencies. By embracing human resources information system technology (HRIS)

that manages your workforce, you are able to get the full potential out of your payroll dollars.

ROBUST, COMPREHENSIVE REPORTINGPerhaps the biggest benefit that the use of an HRIS technology adds to a business is its ability to create reports and presentations. An HRIS technology typically holds all information surrounding the firm’s human resources initiatives, including details regarding the group’s hiring practices, such as a comprehensive list of all job applicants, an up-to-date index of job openings and electronic copies of each employee’s onboarding paperwork, such as I-9 and W2 forms. It also holds data regarding the salary and incentive compensation of each staff member. Results of annual performance appraisals and any disciplinary actions that have been taken toward members of the team are included, as well. Because these figures are held in one database, a business owner possesses the capability of running a variety of detailed reports that encompass some or all of this information.

RECRUITMENT EFFICIENCYIn support of a firm’s staffing efforts, many HRIS platforms provide a sophisticated interface allowing its use by both internal employees, as well as external job applicants. HRIS technology allows candidates for open positions to submit their resumes and contact information to a potential employer from a remote computer. When seeking candidates, the manager is able to perform detailed searches of collected resumes, using a variety of queries, including location, level of education, years of professional experience and technical skill set.

SIMPLIFY BENEFIT ADMINISTRATIONHRIS technology allows a business to streamline the administration of employee benefits. In many cases, employees and new hires may electronically enroll in benefit plans. They may also have the capability of logging onto the system to monitor and update their current coverage throughout the year, changing status, dependent information and contact data as required. A self-service system allows for benefits to be efficiently administered with as little manpower as possible, saving an organization time and money.

From the smallest business to large, HRIS technology positions businesses well for optimal performance in today’s business environment. Leaning into a strong service provider that can consolidate all of these HR aspects into a single, integrated platform will give any organization a powerful employer solution.

EDITORIALS

LOCAL LEADERSa word from

Most Rochester Public Schools (RPS) students are still on summer break, but the District remains active and committed to building upon enhancing our strengths all year round. District initiatives that demonstrate growth, and career and college readiness have been the topic of many conversations lately. You will continue to hear about these topics throughout the summer and into the school year.

FIRST, THERE’S CTECH

Career and Technical Education Center at Heintz (CTECH) is a partnership between the city of Rochester, RCTC, WSU and Rochester Public Schools. RPS will use the facility to provide programming for our students. The CTECH program is designed to support the learning of three types of students: 1) School to work 2) Post secondary education 3) Undecided/Exploratory.

The opening of CTECH will be in two phases. Phase one launches the following programs: STEM Village, Engineering, Agriculture, and Residential Construction. These programs will be in Heintz Center and will begin this fall. Our second phase begins in the fall of 2016. Hospitality, Manufacturing, and Health Sciences will open in the CTECH facility as part of Phase II.

We’re really looking forward to the opening of CTECH and the opportunity it will provide to our students and our up and

coming workforce. For more information on CTECH, visitwww.CTECH.Rochester.k12.mn.us.

SECOND, THERE IS THE OPERATING REFERENDUM

RPS is seeking an operating referendum on the November 2015 ballot. Our need has arisen because the revenue coming into RPS does not sustain the current levels of programming and services that are necessary to provide our students and families with the high quality education and programming that is necessary to ensure the success of all of our students.

The state revenue that is generated for our district has not kept pace with the cost of inflation within K-12 education. Unfortunately, many districts throughout the state find themselves in the same situation as RPS. We are seeking the referendum in order to sustain the teaching, learning, and high quality programming that is offered in our district.

Absent additional revenue generated through a referendum the district will have to make reductions. These reductions would likely result in fewer foreign language offerings, scaling back or possible elimination of CTECH courses and Project Lead the Way courses. RPS will likely see increased class sizes at the elementary level as well as fewer supports to provide small group and individualized supports to students and families.

Our website has very detailed information regarding the current financial state of the district, current programming as well as taxpayer impact information. For more information visitwww.rochester.k12.mn.us/referendum.

INSPIRING, CHALLENGING, AND EMPOWERING ALL STUDENTSContributed by Michael Muñoz, Superintendent at Rochester Public Schools

WITH DAN NELSON, GENERAL MANAGER OF HOMEWOOD SUITES BY HILTONWhat made you want to join the ambassador program? I had been very active in the Brainerd Chamber of Commerce and knew the benefits to a business, especially a new business.

How has being an Ambassador provided you with personal growth? [The Ambassadorship] has expanded my network to hundreds including many key connections I likely would not have met. It has led to public speaking invitations on service training.

What has been the most positive experience in your Ambassadorship? The Chamber’s Hospitality 1st committee formed

the Certified Tourism Ambassador (CTA) program six years ago. My Chamber involvement positioned me to be in a leadership role where I’ve had the privilege to train over 1000 CTA’s on service and concierge level type training. The Ambassadors are a diverse group, representing the Chamber’s diversity as best we can. We are referral fanatics and also a fun social group as well. Besides all the Ambassador functions,

I like to get involved with various committees and challenge the Chamber with new ideas to improve the value of chamber membership.

What are some of your favorite activities to be involved with in your Ambassadorship? The Annual Golf Outing is always a hoot! The Annual Member Celebration is a “don’t miss” event as well, and I really like the various Professional Development seminars.

How do you offer assistance to Chamber members? We get to be the welcome mat and connectors, especially for new members. There are so many benefits [to joining the Chamber], especially for new businesses where you can be put on the business community map in a hurry. I enjoyed joining the Chamber before each hotel opened on my first day on the job…the benefits start before your business opens. I can think of NO better marketing investment.

AMBASSADOR HIGHLIGHT

All of the legislators were upbeat about the accomplishments of the session while still maintaining focus on the missed opportunities in transportation and taxes which will be key priorities for the 2016 Legislative Session. The collective view of the session was summed up by Senator Dave Senjem who said “Given all the seeming chaos, we have a government that still works and is of the people.”

KTTC’s Tom Overlie discussed accomplishments with the legislators that they were most proud of which ranged from important fixes to the Medicaid system, DMC Legislation, additional funding for Alzheimer’s research, and Pre K scholarships.

Transportation funding was also discussed at the recap, specifically the lack of a long term transportation funding bill when all parties agreed that it was a top priority going into the session. While all involved wanted to highlight the 14% year to year increase in transportation funding, Representative Tina Liebling and Senator Carla Nelson both lamented a perceived lack of transparency in the process due to the deadline driven nature of the legislative session. The entire legislative team agreed transportation would be one of the first topics addressed in next year’s legislative session.

Our local legislative team of Senators Senjem and Nelson and Representatives Liebling, Duane Quam and Nels Pierson were joined by representatives from House and Senate Leadership Vicki Jensen and John Petersburg for the event.

Although Women are 52% of the workforce, only 14.2% hold executive positions. There are many theories about why, but the one that Sheryl Sandberg writes about in her book, Lean In, is how women show up “at the table.”

Women in Leadership and Development (WILD) are committed to providing professional growth opportunities for women to continue their journey to the table. On July 23rd, WILD launched a new programming series called Atypical Tea. High tea, during the Victorian age, was served between lunch and supper to provide a snack and, according to Oscar Wilde, a delightful time to gossip, for the aristocracy. It typically was tea and finger sandwiches. Our tea may be served at high tea time, but it certainly is atypical in delivery.

The kick off session for this year’s theme, Confident Communication: How to carry your authentic communication style through age, stage, culture and context, was held at Cambria. Tessa Leung, from Tessa’s Office, provided a wine tasting paired with chocolates provided by Chocolaterie Stam to taste as well. After tasting, Michon Rogers, from RCTC took the group through the first session; Color Your

World. Women stretched their creativity through coloring and set goals to color their own world of communication.

“It is an exercise of vulnerability and authenticity,” Julie Brock said. “To consider the choices and thoughts that go into something as low risk as coloring truly opens up our eyes to how we are making choices about our professional communication.”

MISSED THE FIRST SESSION? NO WORRIES. Although Atypical Tea is presented as a series, you can sign up for individual sessions and not miss a beat. For more information and to register, please visit our event calendar atwww.rochestermnchamber.com.
