Glenda Eastridge, Dean of Mission u, is a member of Green Meadow
UMC in Alcoa and a lifelong Methodist. “United Methodist Women has been a
part of my life since 1975. I have held various offices on the local, district,
and conference levels. I retired after 37 years of teaching in 2014, and
currently serve as a teaching assistant in second grade. It is the perfect job
because I am working in my same school, with many of the children whose
family members I've had as students, and I leave each day at 12:00. No
lesson plans! No state tests! No papers to grade!”
Glenda has had the opportunity to travel extensively in the U.S., Europe,
and China. Her family includes her husband (and answering machine)
Darrell, son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Brittany, and daughter and
son-in-law, Amy and Andrew. She has two grandchildren, Ella and Scotland. Glenda’s life has been
shaped not only by her family, but by her career, church, and most definitely by her membership in
United Methodist Women. "Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!"
Glenda’s contact information is 865-984-8682 or [email protected]
Kay Phillips, Assistant Dean of Mission u, is a member of Roberts
United Methodist Church in Sevierville of the Maryville District. I have
been a member of United Methodist Women for 40+ years and have
served in all offices at the local level. I have served as treasurer and
president at the district level; treasurer and secretary at the conference
level; and am presently serving as treasurer of the Southeastern
Jurisdiction Quadrennial Meeting until 2020. I served one year on the
Board of Directors at Scarritt-Bennett Center in Nashville, TN, as UMW
representative on the Finance Committee. I retired from the U. S. Postal
Service in 2006 after 33 years of service. I enjoy spending time with the
youth in my church, studying God’s Word, reading, traveling, and spend-
ing time with my husband, Don, who is very supportive of the work of United Methodist Women. Our
son and daughter-in-law, David and Kelly, and daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Billy, are a huge

organization known as United Methodist Women!

MISSIONARY CONFERENCES OF THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
IN THE UNITED STATES
By J. Ann Craig with Special Contributor Deborah E. Bass
The aim of this study is to give an overview of the three missionary conferences in the United Methodist
Church, the contexts out of which they grew and their current engagements: The Alaska United Method-
ist Conference; Red Bird Missionary Conference; and the Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference.
Anne Travis retired June 30, 2013, after serving Holston Conference for 13
years as Director of Connectional Ministries. In that position, she had respon-
sibility for age-level ministries (overseeing Children, Youth, Young Adults,
and Older Adults), Camp and Retreat Ministries, and Missions, as well as re-
lating to the program ministry teams of the Conference. Since 2007, Anne
has traveled four times to South Sudan, a ministry that remains a particular
interest to her. She served in 2004, 2008, and 2012 as a lay delegate to
General and Jurisdiction Conferences representing Holston and in 2016 as a
delegate to Jurisdictional Conference. Currently, she is employed part-time
as the Conference Secretary for the Southeastern Jurisdiction of The United Methodist Church. An ac-
tive United Methodist layperson, she and her husband are members of Ebenezer United Methodist
Church in West Knoxville. Her daughter and son-in-law, Clair and Ken Sauer, are both United Method-
ist clergy serving in the Scenic City District and parents of two children. Her daughter and son-in-law,
Lindsay and Jim Bedford, live in Chapel Hill, NC, with their two children, where Jim is a physician spe-
cializing in treatment of children with autism. In semi-retirement, she is enjoying spending time with
grandchildren, sewing, and participating in the Two-Year Academy for Spiritual Formation through the
Upper Room.

Asa Majors is completing her first year as an associate pastor at First Methodist UMC,
Morristown. Originally a Virginia girl, she grew up in a small Appalachian community
called Pearisburg (near VA Tech). She loved being a part of her home church, Pearis-
burg First United Methodist, and served there as a child and youth as much as she pos-
sibly could. After graduating high school, she attended Emory & Henry College and
then headed to Candler School of Theology at Emory University for seminary. Her first
appointment was as the associate pastor at Maryville FUMC, working with youth and
young adults. While she was there she married Brian. With their marriage she also
gained his son, Ethan. From Maryville they moved to Vonore, TN to serve the Bethel-Vonore
Charge. Their other household members are two Shetland Sheep dogs, Jack and Yoshi. They are enter-
tainment nerds. They love comic book stories, Star Wars, Disney, and other great stories. They also en-
joy traveling when their schedules allow for it.

WHAT ABOUT OUR MONEY? A FAITH RESPONSE by Susan K. Taylor
This study explores how we relate to money within the context of our faith. Through this connection be-
tween our faith and our money, we discover how to live closer to God and God’s people, even in our
North American culture that is so deeply defined by money. We will delve into the biblical foundation of
abundance (sufficiency), which stands in opposition to the scarcity narrative our culture tells us from the
time we are very young.
Becky Gantz Hall is a graduate of Tennessee Tech University where she holds a
B.S. in Natural Resources. She is currently the Executive Director at Christ UMC in

Natural Church Development Coach. She has been a District United Methodist
Women President and a Conference United Methodist Women Officer as well as a
teacher at School of Christian Mission and Mission u. Becky has been a General
Conference delegate in 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016. She is very involved in com-
munity service which includes her efforts as a board member of the Bethlehem Cen-
ter, on the board of Volunteers in Medicine, and other charitable involvement such as mission
teams to Dominica, St. Martin, Liberia, Zimbabwe, Brazil, Nicaragua, Estonia, Kenya, India, Cuba,
South Sudan and more. Becky is married to David; they have two grown children and one grand-
son.

YOUTH STUDY
IS IT JUST MONEY? OUR DOLLARS, GOD’S ECONOMY
By Anna Burkett and Tom Burkett
Kacye Castenir is a representative of the Smoky Mountain District. She
lives in Maryville with her husband Daniel Castillo and four “wonderful” sons.
Kacye and Daniel both serve the St. John United Methodist Church (Hispanic
ministry). Kacye worked at Camp Wesley Woods year round for four years
and loved teaching and working with the many different people she met
there. Many of them were from Mexico, so she decided she would study
Spanish and move to Mexico. She lived in Mexico and worked with Volunteers
in Mission of the United Methodist Church for several years. She has a degree
in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (T.E.S.O.L). She has
also attended FUEL training offered by Holston Conference for youth workers.
Kacye says, “In our ministries I have been helping Dani with the youth and with the women’s minis-
try by giving small group Bible Studies. I am also fluent in Spanish, and I work as a translator at a
maternity center in Madisonville.” Kacye also serves as the Language Coordinator for Holston Con-
ference United Methodist Women.

This study, written by a father-daughter team, is designed to engage youth in an exploration of money
as it relates to faith and justice. This collection of activities and discussions will deepen their under-
standing of the complex questions that surround making, having, giving, and using money.
