Interesting facts...

Average monthly weather guide

The United States is an enormous country, stretching for some 2,680 miles coast to coast, so climates and weather can vary quite drastically by season and location. During the summer months (June to August), northern states enjoy warm days and cooler mornings and nights, while southern states and tropical areas experience very hot temperatures. In the autumn, (September to November), temperatures begin to cool down around the country. It’s a particularly beautiful season in northern regions as the leaves change to beautiful shades of red, yellow and orange. Winter (December to February) is fairly mild in the southern states, while the northern, north-eastern, midwestern, western mountains and Great Plains regions often encounter snow and colder temperatures. During the spring (March to May), temperatures begin to warm up and thunderstorms and rainstorms are common across the country into the summer months.

The United States of America is 242 years old this year: The Declaration

of Independence was signed in 1776.

The most populated city in the USA is New York

City, which has 8.5 million inhabitants,

followed by Los Angeles and Chicago.

TC RecommendedTake a look at some of our Travel Counsellors’ recommendations for a unique, once in a lifetime experience in the USA.

Travel Counsellor Caroline visited California recently, and recommends trying a road trip:

“I spent three weeks in California and I loved it. We drove along the beautiful Highway 1 and enjoyed everything California has to offer. From cities to little villages, national parks to vineyards and deserts, there is something for everyone.”

Travel Counsellor Ian explored all that New Orleans had to offer:

“The city has a magical atmosphere that will capture your heart from the moment you arrive and make you never want to leave. The people are characters who are fiercely proud of their roots and culture and rightly so. I can categorically class it as one of my favourite cities on earth without hesitation.”

Meanwhile, Travel Counsellor Andrew explored one of New York’s most famous sites:

“Central Park is a great way to spend a day watching the New Yorkers go about their daily life or you could take a bike, pedicab, walk or a horse and carriage tour around, but we just did our own thing. There is lots for families to do with nature trails and a visit to the Central Park Zoo.”

the USAA Taste of

HAMBURGERS

A U.S. staple, nobody does hamburgers like the

Americans. From cheap and cheerful to classic and

gourmet, you’ll find every type of burger imaginable

here. For a real taste of America, find yourself at a diner,

enjoy some fries on the side and wash it all down with a

root beer float. This is about as American as it gets.

CORN DOGS

Another American classic, a corn dog is a hot dog sausage

coated in a thick layer of cornmeal batter on a stick. Add

some mustard and ketchup and enjoy.

BARBECUE RIBS

Americans are serious about their barbecue and whilst

you can find pretty good barbecue fare almost anywhere

in the country, the best places to eat this U.S. classic are

in the centre of the country.

CLAM CHOWDER

If you’re spending any time on the coast in New England,

you simply must try the clam chowder. A creamy, potato-

filled chowder, this traditional taste of New England will

delight your palate.

APPLE PIE

American as apple pie. Apple pie crossed the Atlantic

with the pilgrims and made itself at home in the USA.

Today, it’s one of the nation’s favourite dishes and the

quintessential American desert.

Head to San Francisco’s China Town and enjoy some authentic Dim Sum, or buy a bag of fresh cookies at the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory in Ross Alley.

New York’s large Jewish population has bequeathed the city some American classics, including the Pastrami and Rye sandwich. Love a bagel? Then don’t miss Murray’s Bagels, where you can enjoy a classic smoked salmon and cream cheese on your choice of bagel.

Joe’s Stone Crab in Miami might be the place to eat this local seasonal delight (October to May) but Miami is also home to a large Cuban ex-pat community, making it the perfect place to try Frita Cubano, or a Cuban sandwich, any time of year.

Looking for something different? In Florida, you can enjoy gator bites, frogs’ legs and catfish. Try the Home Cabbage Fish Camp on the St Johns River near Orlando, a no-frills shack from where you can also set off on an airboat tour of the local swamps.

The Deep South is a gourmet’s delight - be sure to try delicacies such as peach cobbler, mint juleps, gumbo, soul food, jambalaya, fried chicken, barbecue ribs, and even catfish. From five-star establishments offering fine dining, to beachfront shacks that cook only the freshest seafood - you’ll be spoilt for choice in the Deep South.

Also incredibly popular in New Orleans is its coffee, which has a rich, bold flavour thanks to added chicory. Enjoy a café au lait and hot beignets at Café du Monde for a taste sensation that can’t be missed.

MiamiFlorida

When the temperature is balmy and the warm coastal winds sweep through, it’s clear why Miami is the ideal holiday destination. From the Art Deco district, quirky Wynwood and its street art to the trendy rooftop terraces of Brickell, there is a lot that can be found in Miami. South Beach will take your breath away but go beyond the sun-dappled coastline, and the bustling city stretches into a network of neighbourhoods, home to a rich, diverse mix of people. Calle Ocho in Little Havana is the hub of Cuban life in Miami with plenty of traditional restaurants and colourful street festivals.

If you think Miami’s ethnic food scene is purely made up of Cuban restaurants, think again. With one on nearly every corner, it would be easy to think that’s all there is, but you’d be short-changing yourself (and your taste buds). Within the Latin American spectrum, there are also Peruvian, Mexican, Argentinian and Spanish eateries located all over Miami. Miami is also home to countless other flavours, like West Indian, Jamaican and Caribbean comfort food. Broaden your international palate with these irresistible ethnic restaurants, and enjoy an authentic taste of Miami.
