Page 8: A PRESENTATION FROM PRONET NORTH

Achievement• Attained 100% ODF in 2009• Community provided a latrine for the school to

ensure total sanitation• Currently experiencing a spill over: Natural

leaders supporting nearby communities to address OD

• Health status of communities has improved (according to the community, there has been no sickness over the past 1 year)

• Currently putting up sanitation market with a credit fund

Page 9: A PRESENTATION FROM PRONET NORTH

Challenges during implementation• Initial demand for subsidy due to past

experiences.• Communities initiative of latrine construction

delayed due to the season(the peak of farming season)

• Lack of follow up after attaining ODF due to one year project cycle

• Loose soil led to a seasonal collapse of pits• High level of poverty accounting to

community constructing and using only one type of latrine (unlined)

• Standards and specifications from Local Government vrs ability of community members

Significant changes

• Emergence of natural leaders who have triggered nearby communities e.g. Nandomeyiri who have also taken collective action in constructing latrines to end OD.

• Complete eradication of feaco-oral diseases (diarrhoea, typhoid, cholera)

• Reduction of hospital attendance as the story of rushing sick patients to health centres is a thing of the past( 1 year)

Page 11: A PRESENTATION FROM PRONET NORTH

Significant changes continuedNot a single fowl of Viisse has died (coccidiocisis) for the past one year as it stand that feeding on an effected shit escalate the spread, in the event of an outbreak

The Community has constructed a traditional latrine for the school to forestall total sanitation
