CHAPTER 10LESSON 2
MIXTURES
PGS. 456-463
A physical combination of two or more kinds of matter is called a
mixture.
Each kind of matter in a mixture keeps its own chemical
properties.
Many everyday products, including the food you eat and
the clothing you wear, are mixtures
A mixture that is blended completely is called a solution.
saltwater
Salt water is a good conductor of electricity.
A solution might have properties that the original
materials did not have.
Steel is made by mixing iron and carbon. It is much stronger than the original iron.
A mixture of two or more metals or a metal and a nonmetal is
called an alloy.
Bronze is an alloy made of copper and tin.
The materials in a mixture can be separated by using their
physical properties.
Solids are often separated from a liquid by using a filter.
Using a filter to separate a mixture is called filtration.
A mixture containing certain metals can be separated using a
magnet.
Solids can be separated from a solution by using evaporation; the liquid part of the solution is
lost to the air.
Salt crystals left behind after the
evaporation of salt water.
Liquid water can be collected from a solution of salt water by
distillation.
Alloys- mixtures of metals that can be stronger than the original.
Food- mixtures that may taste better together than by themselves.
Magnets can be used to separate mixtures.
