THE WEEK AHEAD

Page 3: A Pennsylvania Charitable Trust Jan. 10, 2016 The Baptism ... · PDF fileRite of Christian Initiation of Adults ... 2016 The Baptism of the Lord ... Mark your calendar for Monday,

Please welcome Fr. Mark Ward to SJN this week-end.

He is representing St. Paul of the Cross and will be

speaking after the Sunday Masses on retreat experi-

ences for men along with reflections on the scripture.

JANUARY 9/10 - END OF SEASON

We celebrate the Baptism of the Lord today

and journey with Jesus into His public minis-

try. It marks the end of the Christmas sea-

son and the beginning of Ordinary Time. Or-

dinary time is important and does not mean

plain or uneventful. Now we count

(“ordinare”) the Sundays till the beginning of

Lent (February 10). Let’s count and pray to-

gether these days of mercy and love in 2016.

UNDECORATING Looking for some willing hands and strong arms to help

us take down the lovely Christmas decorations….come

on January 13, Wednesday night after 7 pm to make

the church ready for Ordinary time.

PANCAKE BREAKFAST - TODAY AFTER ALL SUNDAY MASSES

The free-will donations will support

Genesis House and the Women’s

Choice Network. Donations will sup-

port the needs of pregnant women at

Genesis House and the ultrasound scans

performed by Women’s Choice Network. We’ll

also be collecting baby items (diapers, clothes, baby

wipes, etc.) during the pancake breakfast. The col-

lected items will be donated to Catholic Chari-

ties. Come celebrate Life with pancakes, sausage

and more! Thank you for your support.

SPECIAL COLLECTION NEXT WEEK-END The Pittsburgh Diocese is home to two nationally recog-

nized educational programs for children with special

needs: St. Anthony School Programs and DePaul

School for Hearing & Speech. A special collection to

benefit these two organizations will be taken NEXT

week-end, Jan. 16-17 at all Masses.

St. Anthony’s programs provide Catholic special educa-

tion to children with development delays and autism in

five elementary classrooms, two secondary & one col-

lege-age program located at Duquesne. DePaul School

provides listening & spoken language education to chil-

dren who are deaf or hard of hearing. Without the use of

sign language, DePaul students learn to listen & speak

and transition to their neighborhood schools. Your sup-

port is critical. Your generosity will help these organiza-

tions improve the lives of their students and families.

TOMORROW - MONDAY SCHOOL Mark your calendar for Monday, Jan 11 at 7 pm. Come to hear an excellent speaker from Women’s

Choice Network. Amy Schearing will share with us the

programs and services WCN offers. She will also ad-

dress your questions, etc. January is Respect Life Month

and so we remember all who work for life.

Make plans also for Monday, Jan. 18, when Parish-

ioner Jane Rahenkamp will share with us a great process

for the new year to help us be better to ourselves and

others. Why are some people happier than others? What

is their secret? Jane will present some of the ground

breaking research by psychologist Sonya Lyubormisky

that reveals that 40% of our capacity for happiness is

within our power to change. We need some easy to use

strategies to work on our happiness and Jane will iden-

tify some of the activities that work. Come & see - you

might be happier too! Always good to share great ideas

and information - bring a friend.

BREAD & HOAGIES ARE COMING Next week-end take home some delicious bread and do-

nate some money for Catholic Relief Ser-

vices to feed the hungry. Then plan your

hoagie lunch or dinner for Wednesday,

Jan. 20 - $7 each and any profit benefits SJN!

THANK YOU A special thank you Jessica Bucci, Annie Sny-

der, the adult & children’s choir for the musical

concert & reception last Sunday. We appreciate your

hard work!

RCIA Our candidates Matt, Diana and Sophie

continue on their journey toward the

Easter sacraments through this period of

the catechumenate. During this time, we’ll study and

learn more about the Mass and sacraments. Especially

now they need our prayers and support. Weekly Thurs-

day classes will continue on January 14, 2016. We are

blessed! Keep them in your prayers.

FEAST OF THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD Fittingly, this Jubilee Year of Mercy is also the

Lectionary’s Year of Luke, for Luke’s Gospel highlights

God’s mercy in finding the lost, healing the sick, restor-

ing the broken, comforting the sorrowful, forgiving the

sinner through Jesus’ ministry. But before doing, Luke’s

Jesus is always praying. As practical moderns pro-

grammed to measure worth by productivity, we instinc-

tively appreciate the Jubilee’s call to embrace the practi-

cal challenges of our baptism. But today Luke focuses

not on Jesus being baptized, but on Jesus praying after

baptism. So must we pray to become the disciples we are

called to be, that the Spirit empower us to do what disci-

ples are called to do. Imitating Jesus’ openness to the Spirit will enable us to cooperate with the grace that

transforms us into “beloved sons [and daughters] . . . in

whom the Father is well pleased,” living out, in this Ju-

bilee Year of Mercy, the extraordinary potential of our

baptism. Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch

ture that explains and highlights important elements of

the Catholic faith with activities that review the theme of

the week. Each subscription costs $34.90 but we are

terested. Please call the Rel Ed office for more details or
