+ Synaxarion +

The Sunday of the 318 God-bearing Fathers of the 1st Ecumenical Council (325 AD). The heresiarch Arius was a Libyan by race and a Protopresbyter of the Church of Alexandria. In 315, he began to blaspheme against the Son and Word of God, saying that He is not true God, consubstantial with the Father, but is rather a work of creation, alien to the essence and glory of the Father, and that “there was time when He was not.” This frightful blasphemy shook the faithful of Alexandria. Alexander, his Archbishop, after trying in vain to correct him through admonitions, cut him off from Communion [since Arius cut himself off from the Church by his false teachings; the Archbishop publicly declared what Arius had already accomplished through his falling away from the true Faith and finally in a local council deposed him in the year 321]. Yet neither did the blasphemer wish to be corrected, nor did he cease sowing the deadly tares of his heretical teachings; but writing to the bishops of other cities, Arius and his followers requested that his doctrine be examined, and that if it were unsound, that the correct teaching be declared to him. By this means, his heresy became universally known and won many supporters, so that the whole Church was soon in an uproar.

Therefore, moved by divine zeal, the first Christian Sovereign, Saint Constantine the Great, Equal-of-the-Apostles, summoned the renowned 1st Ecumenical Council in Nicaea, a city of Bithynia. It was there that the shepherds and teachers of the Church of Christ gathered from all regions in the year 325. All of them, with one mouth and one voice, declared that the Son and Word of God possesses the same_[uncreated, divine] essence [Gk. homo-ousios] as the Father, “Light of Light, true God of true God,” so they composed the holy Symbol of Faith [the Creed] up to the 7th article (since the remainder, beginning with “And in the Holy Spirit,” was completed by the 2nd Ecumenical Council in 381 AD). Thus they anathematized the impious Arius of evil belief and those of like mind with him, and cut them off as rotten members from the whole body of the faithful.

Therefore, recognizing the divine Fathers as heralds of the Faith after the divine Apostles, the Church of Christ, has appointed this present Sunday for their annual commemoration, giving thanks to Almighty God, the Holy Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, unto the glory of God, unto their praise and honor, and unto the strengthening of the true Faith [and the faithful who hold fast to It]. St. Tikhon, Bishop of Amathus. A wonderworker, Tikhon was chosen unanimously as bishop upon the death of blessed Mnemonius, and consecrated by the renowned Epiphanius for the diocese of Amathus. The purity of his life and his zealous adherence to Orthodoxy recommended him for this rank. There were still pagans in Cyprus at that time, and Tikhon undertook with apostolic zeal to turn the unbelievers into believers, having great success in this. After lengthy toil in the Lord's vineyard, he entered into the eternity of the blessed in about 425 AD. He is named “wonderworker” because of the many miracles that he performed during his lifetime. His father was a baker, and whenever his father left him alone in the shop, he would distribute the bread to the poor without payment. His father reproached him once for doing this, so he prayed to God and their storehouse became so full of grain that they could open the door only with difficulty. Another time he planted a dry slip from a vine and the vine grew green and bore fruit in its season.
