Thegameoficehockeyisagameoforganizedandunorganizedchaos.Eliteplayerscanreachspeedsofupto30mph,stop,startandchangedirectiononadime,andpossesstheuniqueabilitytoreadandreacttotheplaybeforeitactuallyoccurs.Themasteryoftheseskills,bothonandofftheiceareofutmostimportance.Thepurposeofthismanualistoeducateparentsofyoung,aspiringhockeyplayersabouttheimportanceoflong-termathleticdevelopment,particularlythesignificanceofoff-icepreparation.USAHockeyreferstolong-termathleticdevelopmentastheADM(AmericanDevelopmentModel),whileHockeyCanadausesthemantraLongTermPlayerdevelopment.Whateververbiageisused,bothmodelsattempttoanswerthesamequestion.
